Welcome to AP Human Geography. This course is
yearlong and is designed to meet the requirements
of a college-level human geography course. The
course focuses on the distribution, processes, and
effects of human populations on the planet. Human
geography answers the question of why things are
where they are!
The purpose of this summer assignment is to
prepare you for the course in the fall, to get you
thinking geographically, and to give you an overview of what you will be studying in the course.
There are three parts to the assignment. Please read all directions clearly and complete as
indicate; if you have any questions please email me.
Clearly label your summer assignment and bring it to school on the first day.

a. Create tabs on the topics of study. This may be organized by unit or by chapter
(listed in textbook). Organization will help you be successful in this course

Assignment: Learning Guide and Vocabulary Cards
1. Read chapter one AND complete the key issues learning guide: The Cultural
Landscape, James Rubenstein
You can access chapter one directly through the following options:
 Publishers website (see directions at the end of this packet)
 My website (Be sure to read parts one and two)
 Room B222 (this is available only until the last day of school)

2. Using the vocabulary terms located on pages 38-41 create working definitions
a. They need to be handwritten on index cards
i. Index cards should be as follows:
1. Term on the front
2. Definition on the back
a. In your definition include what they are and why they are
important.
b. Also include an example of the term (this can be either
written or illustrative)

Assignment: Map Packet
As this course discusses all aspects of the world we live in you need to know WHERE these
places are.
**** Review these maps over the summer. Use websites listed below to quiz yourself. You will
be assessed on these maps in the first few weeks of school.
Map packets are available either in B222 prior to the end of the school year or directly on my
website
1. Label the outline maps provided
a. Continent/World Map: Seven Continents, Five Oceans, Equator, Tropic of
Cancer, Tropic of Capricorn
b. The continents of North America, South America, Europe, Asia, Southeast Asia,
Africa, and Southwest Asia/North Africa (Middle East).
i. Label each country and capital city *** Pay attention to smaller countries
that may be missed.
c. If you need extra maps print them online at worldatlas.com or Arizona Geography
Alliance ( http://geoalliance.asu.edu/maps/regions )
2. Follow the following guidelines to earn full credit
i. All lettering of Countries must be in BLACK ink
ii. All lettering of Capitals must be in RED ink
iii. If labeling oceans/bodies of water color and label in BLUE
iv. Place all items as close to their actual location as possible
v. Countries need to be neatly shaded
1. No TWO touching countries should be the same color
a. DO NOT use BLUE (represents water)
b. Colors should be light enough to read the lettering
vi. Maps must include a key of all colors and symbols used
vii. You may use the following abbreviations
1. W-West
E-East N-North
S-South
2. Place names longer than NINE letters may be shortened.
Maps will be graded based on the following:
 Correct location of all items (see World Atlas Assignment)
 Neat presentation of all lettering and coloring
 Completion of the assignment

Suggested Assignment:
Pay attention to the news!! Read the newspaper, watch the news, follow news stories online,
and subscribe to feeds. The more you are aware of the world around you the better you will
understand this course and the world we live in 
