Presenters
Dr Zuleyka Zevallos is the Project Manager for Science in Australia Gender
Equity (SAGE). Zuleyka has a PhD in sociology and has managed several effective
policy and research projects addressing gender, racial and sexual equity issues.
Prior to her position with SAGE, Zuleyka taught sociology at Swinburne University
and Monash University, and later worked as an applied researcher for federal and
state government as well as a research and social media consultant for businesses
and not-for-profit organisations.
Zuleyka has published academic and government research on gender, sexuality
and ethnicity of migrant youth; employment outcomes of international students;
the socio-economic and health outcomes of migrants and refugees; intercultural
communication; interdisciplinary social modelling; environmental health; and
corporate diversity. She is also active on social media promoting equity and
diversity as well as scientific literacy.
James Lush joined Equality Challenge Unit (ECU), UK in April 2013 as
an Athena SWAN Adviser, providing strategic and operational support to the
development of the Athena SWAN Charter. James’ key roles include managing
charter submission review rounds, moderating review panels and preparing
detailed feedback to applicants. In 2015 he became an Equality Charters Adviser,
in recognition of ECU’s expanded programme of equality charters.
Prior to joining ECU, James worked for two years at the Biochemical Society, first
as a Policy Officer and then as a Policy Manager, working across a wide range of
science policy issues in conjunction with colleagues at the Society of Biology.
He played a key role in the development of a number of gender equality initiatives,
including standalone projects and for the Biochemical Society’s ‘Celebrating
women in biochemistry’ year in 2013. James also sat on review panels for two
rounds of Athena SWAN Charter awards during this period.
About the SAGE workshops
The Athena SWAN Charter workshops are designed to provide practical
guidance and support to Charter members, to better enable progress
on their Athena SWAN award applications. The workshops are also
an opportunity to network with other Charter members.
Each workshop is designed to help Charter members work
towards key stages in the preparation of their award
application.
Workshop 1 focuses on data and analysis. Presentations
will discuss data examples of Bronze applications,
highlighting best practice and how to address
common challenges. Workshop activities are
designed to help Charter members reflect on
how they might collect, evaluate and address
information gaps when examining gender
equity issues within their institutions.
