OFFICE OF DISABILITY SERVICES (ODS) DANA HALL 106 [email protected] (717) 245-1734 www.dickinson.edu/ODS-Faculty IDENTIFYING A NOTE‐TAKER – GUIDANCE FOR FACULTY The student giving you this memo is eligible for a note‐taking accommodation in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, and is requesting to receive supplemental notes taken by a classmate. It is important that you keep all information regarding the student’s disability and his/her identity confidential, unless the student indicates an interest in making his or her disability status known to others. How to Select a Note‐Taker for Your Class To identify a note‐taker for your class, use one or more of the following strategies: Ask a student directly. o Review your class list to see if there are any students you already know to be reliable and detail‐oriented. o Check the list of previously reliable note‐takers on page 2 of this guidance to see if any are in your class. Ask the entire class if someone would like to volunteer. You can… o Send an email to the entire class (see our sample email at www.dickinson.edu/ODS‐NT) o Make a verbal announcement in class (see our sample script below). SAMPLE SCRIPT TO READ IN CLASS TO PROCURE A VOLUNTEER NOTE‐TAKER “We have one or more students in this class who are eligible to receive supplemental class notes taken by a classmate, and I’m looking for a volunteer note‐taker. This person would simply take class notes and then scan your notes and upload them to Banner, where the recipient will be able to access them. You will be trained on how to scan and upload your notes by the Office of Disability Services. This person needs to be someone who… attends every class takes thorough, legible notes, and demonstrates an ability to capture essential information taught in class. As a thank‐you for your efforts, note‐takers will be given the option of receiving a certification of their volunteer service to support students with disabilities, or a gift certificate to the Bookstore and Devil’s Den, based on the number of times that notes are scanned. Whichever option you choose, our class note‐taker will be providing a much needed service, and this would be a great addition to any resume. If you are interested, please come see me after class to get a note‐taker application.” Ask any volunteers to complete the attached application and to bring their notes to you for your review and possible feedback. If a student tells you he/she has been a note‐taker before, but you do not see his/her name on the list on the reverse side, please contact ODS at 717‐245‐1734 or [email protected] for guidance. What to Do If More Than One Student Volunteers If you receive multiple responses, select only one volunteer per class. Not only is it difficult for our office to track multiple note‐takers for one class, we also are unable to identify which volunteer’s notes most accurately reflect your lecture. If you’re having difficulty selecting a note‐taker among several volunteers, please contact ODS for guidance. (Continued on next page) Once You’ve Identified a Note‐taker 1. Ask the note‐taker to bring his/her notes and application (signed by you) to the ODS office in 106 Dana Hall as soon as possible between 1:30 ‐ 4:00 pm, M‐F, when we have staff available to demonstrate note scanning. 2. Promptly send an email to [email protected] with the following information: note‐taker’s name the name(s) of the intended recipient(s), class abbreviation and section (please include all cross‐listings) whether notes will be taken by hand or by computer Accessing the Notes You will be able to access the notes that your note‐taker uploads through CLIQ on the Dickinson Gateway. Once your note‐taker is identified, ODS will provide you with specific instructions for how to do so. Experienced Note‐Takers In alphabetical order, here are students who have previously served as reliable note‐takers (however, we cannot assess the quality of their notes, as we don’t know what was covered in the class lectures). If you select one of these students, we recommend that you look at his/her notes to ensure that they effectively capture the key points from your lecture.
