The Penny Project has provided funding for the Back Pack program since in started seven years ago. It was started by the American Baptist Home Mission Society to raise 14 million pennies, which reflects the number of children living in poverty in the USA and Puerto Rico. The number was later increased to 15 million. We reported the number of pennies collected from our church, and with all the other churches involved, the last reported total was 10 million pennies given. Though the project continues, we have had a small response from our people, so effective at the end of this year, we will discontinue the program. Please have any pennies that you wish to contribute in by the 25th of December and the year’s collection will be sent for the Back Pack program. The American Baptist Women's Ministries thanks each of you for your contributions. ~ Winnie Dowding SBC Staff Love Gift - Help show your appreciation here at Second Baptist by contributing toward a Staff Love Gift. Please give your contribution to any Deacon, place it in the offering plate or turn it in to the church office by December 16th. Please mark your check or envelope “Staff Love Gift”. Part II In the last Midweek, I shared about our upcoming series, Experiencing God. Pastor Jim Cummings led the congregation through this series about ten years ago as part of a small group exercise. This time around, I intend to use it on several levels including worship, Wednesday Bible studies and individually in the form of personal devotions. There is nothing magical about this series. Although a person might enter into the series expecting to have an amazing encounter with God, it doesn't happen simply by enrolling in the series and reading the materials. While those first steps are important, it will be meaningless unless the person incorporates personal prayer, reflection and listening for God's voice. Too often, we treat God like a concept or doctrine. We learn from a book about what God is about and we attend worship where more of God is revealed. But there is a big difference between learning about God and KNOWING God. Knowing God involves moments of intimate prayer and dwelling in God's presence. This series will help you move toward those moments, but it will be up to you to take each step. Three resources will be available. Experiencing God: Knowing and Doing the Will of God is the basic text for the series. While this book is practical and contains all the information, the more important book for you to own is the Experiencing God workbook. For those who went through the series ten years ago, if you still have your book, I would encourage you to use it again. Copies will be available for $10 (A significant reduction from the retail price.) This book is the most important part of becoming involved in the series. A third resource is a 365 Day devotional based upon the Experiencing God series. It will be available for $5. As I shared last Sunday in worship, the worth of the Experiencing God process is dependent entirely on how much of ourselves we invest through prayer and time. I hope you take time in the next few month to invest in growing closer to God. In Him, Pastor Steve In December, we take up the American Baptist Church Retired Ministers + Missionaries Offering. This offering provides financial support for the retired ministers, missionaries, and widowed spouses who have helped build our churches. We will collect this offering through December 18th. Please see the attached letter from Robert (Bob) Molby, where he discusses the importance of the RMMO.
