Every weekday morning many of the residents of Camphill Farm

Every weekday morning many of the residents of Camphill Farm Community Hermanus walk to the craft
workshop situated next to a babbling brook and some of the farm’s oldest oak trees. These individuals all
have one thing in common. They are adults with intellectual disabilities who have found a safe and
supported long term home at Camphill Farm, with all their needs met and access to work opportunities.
In the craft enterprise, residents such as Johnathan and Claudia have the chance to make a valuable
contribution to their community in creating master pieces of craft which are sold to generate income.
Claudia says “I like the craft workshop because I can learn a lot from the young volunteers and I have
learned how to knit a pointed hat and I also learned how to make baby booties. I am also free to talk to
Nonkanyiso if something is bothering me”
Claudia Peyerl-Jansen with Catherine Potton and Bridgitte Bartlett
The big tables in the craft workshop are hubs of activity during work hours amongst friendly chatter and laugter. And
in winter time, the ambience of the workshop is made even cosier by a warm fire. Apart from knitting, weaving
and crocheting the residents also enjoy drawing and writing. For those with intellectual disabilities, these
activities can pose quite a challenge and in the true spirit of being “Camphillers” they take the task on
wholeheartedly.

Hannah Tersteegen, Eva Modden and Pauline Bonisch are volunteers from Germany who, together with
Nonkanyiso Setoli from Zwelihle, provide skilled co-ordination for this group. With up to 26 residents in the
enterprise at one time, it is a formidable task for the four women to assist each individual while producing
quality products and keeping the group connected in its vision.
Sadly, we have to say farewell to Hannah, Eva and Pauline at the end of July as they head back to Germany;
and so, with this looming, we are looking for a calm, competent mature adult with entrepreneurial skills to
coordinate this group workshop.
If you are interested in finding out more, please phone Christine Scott our HR Manager on 021 200 2239.
