JCC Wins Eight FIRST PLACE Awards in
Reader’s Choice Survey
The Jewish Standard recently held a readership survey,
Reader’s Choice, where readers ranked their top choices in everything from nursery schools and camps to
their favorite restaurants and health clubs. The results
recently came in and we are pleased to report that our
JCC won first place in eight major categories. Our
agency was voted best Jewish Community Center;
the Leonard and Syril Rubin Nursery School won for
best Jewish Early Childhood program; Finish the
Day at the J was voted best after school program; the
Neil Klatskin Day Camp won for best day camp; the
Thurnauer School of Music and the School of
Performing Arts placed first for music and dance
schools; the Russ Berrie Family Health and
Recreation Complex was voted the best health club;
and our yoga classes and comprehensive fitness
offerings won first place choices as well. In addition,
our Teen Department and Reyna’s Paper Dolls earned
top placements.

Since opening in January, the modern, twostory Berrie Complex has become a thriving,
high-energy fitness club, drawing hundreds of
new members, who flock to the JCC for all
their fitness needs. Use of the facility has
grown exponentially, and we are happy to
report that we will be expanding the downstairs locker rooms. With our contractors currently on-site, our hope is to begin work as
soon as possible and we anticipate that the
construction will be complete by the first
quarter of 2011.
“We are very proud of this recognition,” says JCC
Executive Director Avi A. Lewinson. “It validates that
our community sees us as offering some of the best
programs and services around, and we thank you, our members, for demonstrating your loyalty and support. Your votes, which have placed us as leaders
in nearly every category, tell us we are achieving what we set out to do, and
that means the world to us.”
GOOD NEWS:
“We are particularly proud that our Russ Berrie Family Health and Recreation
Complex was voted best health club,” Avi continues. “Our renovation has been
a long and passionate undertaking (see our renovation update on page 4) and
our new health and recreation facilities were one of the key targets in our
expansion. Our goal was to become a premier health and wellness resource for
our community and with your votes, it is clear we are succeeding. Our promise, as we move forward, is to assure you that we will always do our best to
earn your confidence in us, and we will begin by sharing some very good
news.”

“When the locker-rooms opened in January
2010, we recognized we had made a mistake
in the size of the downstairs locker rooms.
We investigated all possible solutions and determined that expanding the
locker room was in the best interest of our membership. The JCC Board of
Directors voted to approve this construction to ensure that we are positioned
for future growth and that the JCC continues as a central destination for the
Jewish community,” says JCC President Pearl Seiden. “I am pleased to add that
a task force has also been established, with representatives from both the general membership and the Seiden Wellness Center, to collaborate on design
changes that will accommodate the many and complex needs of our members.”
“We have the best facilities, programming and staff one could hope for and we
are determined to earn our members’ ongoing loyalty by continuing to grow
and expand with their needs in mind,” adds Health and Recreation Director
Roberto Santiago. “We were voted best health facility this year and look forward to being rated number “1” for many years to come.”

Message from the Executive Director
The Jewish New Year is upon us
once again and there are few
times of the year that I enjoy
more. Rosh Hashanah brings
with it the promise of new beginnings, the hope of renewal, and
the magic of a fresh start. It is a
time to look forward, with focus
on the future.
Here at the JCC, we are entering the New Year with a magnificent new facility. Blueprints literally came to life as we watched
our new health club, program spaces, and nursery school
rooms take shape. Soon we will also enjoy a new atrium
entrance and community area. What a blessing to enter the
New Year with the stability, security, and continuity that this
new building affords us.
This message of internal renewal and looking inside certainly
applies to us here at the JCC. The generosity of our members
has allowed us to build a beautiful new building. But the JCC is
so much more than a building and Rosh Hashanah reminds us
of that. It's about the things that take place inside this building
- programs and services that enrich people's lives in body,
mind, and spirit.
At its heart, the JCC is about the things you can't touch. It's
about cultivating and strengthening community. It's about nurturing people at every age and stage of life. And it's about
instilling within the next generation the Jewish values that
have, for millennia, held us together as a people.
No, you won't find these things in any given room or hallway
or gym. But you will feel our commitment to principles every
time you walk through our doors.
For the Jewish people, however, there is no future without the
past. There is no looking forward without looking back and I
am reminded that the real message of Rosh Hashanah is one of
reflection. What kind of person was I during this past year? Am
I proud of my actions and deeds? And, can I do better in the
coming year?
As we wish all of you a Shana Tovah U’metukah…the happiest,
healthiest and sweetest of Jewish New Years, we invite you to
join us in our efforts to meet the needs of our community and
to enhance the Jewish experience of our lives.
This process of self-examination is what our tradition refers to
as Teshuva. Commonly translated as repentance, Teshuva comes
from the Hebrew root meaning "to turn." In its most literal
sense, Rosh Hashanah is about turning towards or re-turning to
the values that are important to us.
B’ vracha,
Avi. A. Lewinson
Renovation Update
Now that we are completing the 21st month of our 26-month renovation, the exciting transformation of our JCC is nearly at an
end. Here is the update on all the major changes that have taken place over the summer or currently underway:
• Six new classrooms have opened in the Rubin Wing, along with a refurbished and expanded Nursery Activity Area.
The final four classrooms will be finished this fall and ready for use after the winter break.
• The main meeting rooms on the second floor have been completely reconfigured and are currently under construction.
They will include many new conference rooms, including one that can accommodate a large crowd or close off down the
middle for more intimate gathers, a spacious, relocated Grossmann Board Room, and many staff offices.
• The new Tumble Room is open for use and features a climbing wall and mats so children can enjoy an assortment of
fun activities.
• Both Racquetball Courts are open for use and Pilates has moved into Exercise Studio #4.
• The Benaroya Youth Center is now refurbished to include an expanded Ben Bergen Youth Fitness Center, two youth
workshop rooms, and a relocated Teen Lounge to serve as a welcoming gathering space for our youth.
• Work is also progressing on the new front entrance and expanded lobby, which will be completed in October with a
welcoming double-door access and a convenient new elevator.
Other upcoming construction includes:
• Creating new, refurbished suites for: Senior Adults, Membership, the remainder of the Rubin Nursery Wing and the Guttenberg
Center for Special Services. New spaces will include the Seniors Adult Lounge, the Computer Learning Center, the ARC Room,
as well as relocating the Teaching Kitchen. It will also include relocating and expanding the men’s and women’s bathrooms,
adding a family bathroom, building the new café, and completing the final four new nursery classrooms.
• Final construction will include the relocation and expansion of the Membership Offices to a new suite conveniently located off
the new lobby; refinishing the Judaic Shop and the entire first floor hallway, and creating two new offices and a meeting room
for the Guttenberg Center for Special Services. Construction should be complete by the end of January.
Please Note: On or around September 22-October 6 the main hallway downstairs will be completely inaccessible. During this two
week period, crossing from one side of the building to the other will only be possible on the second floor. After October 6 until
the end of January, there will be a temporary walkway in place to allow people to travel from one side of the building to the other
on the first floor.
Before we know it, the JCC will be remodeled and revitalized and all this construction will be just a memory. The cooperation and
patience of the membership throughout this process has been remarkable, making this monumental transition so much easier. We
thank everyone for their patience!
To stay up-to-date on every phase and stage of development, please refer to signage that is displayed throughout the building. If
you have any questions, comments or concerns about the renovation, please do not hesitate to email us at [email protected].

One of the most unique features
of Judaism is its invitation to engage in life-long
dialogue with our sacred texts and traditions. Wresting
with the text by exploring the questions it raises about
faith, doubt, loyalty, love, community, identity and
morality, is a hallmark of Jewish piety for leaders and
lay people alike. Adding her voice to generations of
master teachers and scholars of Torah, Aviva Gottlieb
Zornberg plumbs the layers of biblical narratives for
their insights into human nature and consciousness.
Combining literary analysis with psychoanalytic
thought as well as rabbinic and Hassidic teachings,
Zornberg uncovers the richness of the Bible and the
interplay between self, family, community and God.

Jesus, Freud and the Jews
with Dr. Samuel Slipp, M.D.
Wednesday, 10/20 , 8-9:30 pm, Free and Open to the community
Both Jesus and Freud were Jewish healers. Jesus was a
rabbi who preached justice and freedom for the Jews
oppressed by the Romans. Freud’s negative views about
religion, rituals, and groups can now be modified by
modern scientific findings. Come discuss mankind’s
search for freedom and peace: Is religion the cause of
violence as claimed by atheist writers? Or is religion a
tool used by those who hunger for domination and
violence? Dr. Slipp will have copies of his new book
for sale and signing.

Digital Photo Wonders with Murray Weiss
Tuesdays, 10/5-11/23, 1:30-3:30 pm
Esther, a frail 83-year-old widow, recently moved in with her
daughter, Pauline Chernichaw. It was a difficult transition and
Pauline worried for her mother, who was always a highly social
woman, fearing she would be bored staying in the house all day.
Looking for options, Pauline, who was a JCC member for years,
remembered that the JCC has ran a social adult daycare – the Kaplen
Adult Reach Center (ARC) – and decided to call for information.
When she leaned that it met four days a week from 9 am to 2 pm,
and included breakfast and lunch, stimulating activities, Jewish
content, close supervision and door to door transportation, she was thrilled. She made an appointment to have
Esther join the group, hoping it would be a good fit, but little did she know that ARC would exceed even her
most hopeful expectations.
At breakfast the first part of the program day, Esther met Frances, a sweet and talkative 101-year old, and they
became fast friends. Esther joined ARC, and she and Frances quickly realized that they not only had common
interests, but shared a common history as well. Both women grew up in Russia, had similar childhoods,
endured the same hardships, survived the war and found the determination they needed to build new lives in
New York. They even shared a common language –Yiddish – which they spoke all day as they opened their
hearts to each other, marveling how lucky they were, at a late stage in life, to have found such a friendship.
Not long after Esther started attending ARC, Frances’ daughter, Harriet Simon, noticed such an unbelievable
change in her mother that she called the program director to discuss her mother’s new friendship. Since
Frances’ short term memory was failing, and she was now coming home with detailed stories on every aspect
of her day, Harriet thought her mother might actually be inventing her new friend.
To her delight, she was told that the friendship was as real and as strong as a friendship can be. And, as life is
full of little surprises, it can happen at any time. Even when you are 101 like Frances! And Pauline and Harriet
couldn’t be happier for their mothers.
“I love to see Esther and Frances together,” says Pauline. “They support and praise each other. They sit
together at meals, speaking Yiddish, and at the end of the day, the two of them ride back home together on the
bus side by side. I knew ARC would be a great program for her, but I never in my wildest imagination thought
she’d find a new best friend. I’m so grateful to programs like ARC, where little miracles like this can happen.”
“ARC has provided my mother with a great program and has provided me with some much-need respite,”
adds Harriet. “But this friendship is the icing on the cake, a rare and unexpected gift for both Frances and
Esther. They enjoy being together so much that Pauline and I are making plans to get them together on weekends as well. This kind of friendship is priceless at any age and we’ll get them together as often as we can.”
The Kaplen Adult Reach Center (ARC) is an Adult Social Day Care program providing social, therapeutic and rehabilitative services to frail elderly people suffering from Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of related dementia. It is a Medicaid provider. For more information and to

Annual GOlf Classic
On Monday, July 26, The Kaplen JCC on the Palisades held its 10th annual Golf Classic at the
Montammy Golf Club in Alpine, New Jersey. This sell-out fundraising event raised more than
$190,000 to advance one of the JCC’s major missions – to assist children with physical, emotional
and developmental disabilities. An additional $60,000 was raised for the construction of a
“boundless” playground (see page 11).
The auctions featured hard-to-get items such as an NBA All Star weekend in Los Angeles, an
unheard-of dinner for eight at Rao’s restaurant, a guitar autographed by Taylor Swift, theater
tickets, sporting events, beautiful jewelry and more.
The Classic featured an afternoon shotgun, hole-in-one competitions, prizes, awards and a 50/50
raffle, wonderful meals and a lavish cocktail reception. To mark the 10th anniversary, a new Classic
logo was unveiled during dinner, bearing the names of Michael Kollender, JoJo Rubach and Barry
Zeller, the Classic Founding Chairs, who are now passing the torch to new leadership: Jeffrey Jagid,
Eric Kleiner and Jason Rubach. JCC President Pearl Seiden delivered a moving tribute to the
founding chairs, acknowledging their inspiration for conceiving the Classic and then spearheading
its success year after year to raise more than $2,000,000 to enrich the lives of hundreds of people
with special needs in our community.

The JCC Annual Golf Classic is one way the JCC raises money to
support special services for children in our community. To date,
proceeds from the Classic have provided summer camping experiences for children with autism; the chance for children with special
needs to participate in our nursery school and summer camp; the
opportunity for developmentally disabled children and teens to
acquire valuable life skills to improve their daily lives; and the
chance for people of all ages with special needs to participate in
Special Games for Special People, a fun-filled day of sports and
camaraderie. Part of this year’s proceeds will suport the construction of a “boundless playground” at the JCC, a specially designed
“universal” play space that allows children of all abilites to play
and learn, side by side.

Kaplen JCC on the Palisades Annual Meeting
A large gathering assembled for the 60th Annual Meeting at the JCC on May 25 to
celebrate major JCC achievements and to honor JCC leadership and staff. Outgoing
President Robin Miller delivered her final state-of-the-center address and was
presented with an award acknowledging her vision and passion. Pearl Seiden,
incoming president, delivered an inspiriting speech regarding our agency’s future,
saying: “Just as my mentors and role models prepared me to assume this important
leadership role, so do I hope to pave the way for future generations of committed
Jews who will inherit the leadership of our JCC and help to grow our precious legacy
of Judaism, Jewish life and Jewish community.”
The evening also included a special awards presentation: Dianne Nashel was
presented with an Advanced Leadership award and Michael Reingold, Assistant
Director of the Thurnauer School of Music, was presented with the Staff Recognition
Award. New board members were elected, the Music School provided a musical
interlude, and members who pledged their support to Gift of Community Capital
Campaign were thanked for their instrumental role in helping the JCC realize its
facility renovation, which is proceeding on schedule to ensure our place as a premier
community gathering place for generations to come.

Participants will gain valuable leadership skills, form bonds with socially conscious Jewish peers, and learn how to make a difference.
We invite interested teens to apply. Class will be limited to 20 post Bar/Bat Mitzvah teens, who will serve on a grant-making board,

Thurnauer School Director
Dorothy Kaplan Roffman, said,
“We are so grateful to the Community Chest, its Board of Managers and its director, Harriet Tanner, for their long-time support of this partnership. They, too, are
our partners in this venture and, because the Community Chest is donated to this
community, they have a true understanding of what this program can mean for
the growth and development of the children of Englewood.”
The JCC Thurnauer School of Music (www.jccotp.org/thurnauer) is among a
small group of arts organizations in New Jersey recently designated as “Major Arts
Institutions” by the New Jersey State Council on the Arts. As New Jersey’s leading

Englewood Public School District includes a week-long string quartet
residency for every third-grader; a subsidized 30-week after school program of

and a scholarship program at the Thurnauer School covering private lessons,
musicianship class, ensemble participation, workshops, concerts, master classes
and performance opportunities for the most highly motivated students in fifth to
twelth grade. This year’s graduates will be attending Stanford University, Rutgers

Due to state budget cuts, aspects of the Partnership are in jeopardy, for the coming
year, and we are activly seeking funding to sustain the entire program. Please call

HEALTH AND RECREATION: OUR NEW FITNESS TEAM
The Russ Berrie Family Health and Recreation Complex is booming and
we are pleased to announce that we have promoted four talented staff
members, who are working together as a dynamic team to take our
health and fitness offerings to new heights.
Roberto Santiago has been promoted to director of our Health and Recreation
Department, where he will supervise Aquatics, Athletics, Fitness and Wellness, along
with all facilities associated with the Russ Berrie Family Health and Recreation Complex.
He will also work with department heads to develop and build new programming.
Roberto is certified by the NSCA (National Strength and Conditioning Association) and
specializes in athletic training and movement skills. As a professional football player in
his early career, he learned indispensable techniques in strength, speed and agility training, which he has been sharing with JCC members since he joined the JCC in 2000. He
also possesses strong nutritional expertise. Roberto began his tenure at the JCC as an athletic coordinator, where he supervised children’s athletic programming. He later went on to become a Wellness
coordinator, Assistant Director of the Fitness Department and then Fitness Director, where he made a major contribution to growing our personal training programs. Roberto studied mathematics at New Jersey University and
graduated with a degree in Liberal Arts.
“I was fortunate to train with some very amazing people in my athletic career and I am eager to share what I’ve
learned with our members,” says Roberto. “Our new H&R facilities are the premier place to train and my goal is
to give our members the best programs and the best experiences they could hope for.”
Barbara Marrott has been promoted from Director of Group Exercise to Fitness
Director, which includes Group Exercise. As a certified Group Exercise instructor for 25
years and a successful personal trainer for nearly 20, she will use her expertise to oversee
and grow fitness programs at the JCC. A published author, she has appeared as a fitness
expert on television, has taught at Canyon Ranch and participated in numerous triathlons
and marathons, including the Boston Marathon.
In May 2009, Barbara began working part time at the JCC, where she became inspired to
grow and introduce new programs. In just one year, she has successfully launched a
triathlon program, a cycling club, built a highly successful spin program, and has taken
group exercise at the JCC to new heights.
“Eleanor Roosevelt once said: ‘Do something every day that scares you a little,’” says Barbara. “I really try to live
by this, knowing that if we don’t break out of our comfort zones, we won’t grow. At the same time, another motto
I live by is ‘Practice makes better.’ Nobody’s perfect and perfection is never an end goal I encourage people to
aspire to. Seeing ongoing improvement is what really matters and this is what I try to help people attain.”
Keri Thoren has been promoted to Assistant Fitness Director and Youth Fitness
Program Coordinator. With a BS in Elementary Education from the University of Tampa,
she has extensive experience teaching children of all ages, as well as pre-teens and adults
with special needs who are developmentally, behaviorally and academically challenged.
In 2008, Keri left Florida and returned to Bergen County, where she grew up, and began
working in the H&R department at the JCC. Eager to learn more and take on more
responsibilities, Keri was coached in all aspects of health and fitness and assumed positions as a floor instructor and personal trainer, where she gained a deep understanding of
the department and its goals. She also worked in the Youth Fitness Center, the H&R desk
and membership. In her new role, Keri will conduct fitness orientations and assessments
for new and current members, and will continue serving as a personal trainer. Given her experience teaching children, she will also assist in developing youth programming, as well as serving as a knowledgeable liaison between
members and H&R.
“I am very excited about my new role,” says Keri. I look forward to making contributions that will allow our fitness programming to grow and to share the benefits of a healthy, fit lifestyle with members.”
On staff at the JCC for three years, Irene Laoudis has been promoted to Health &
Recreation Coordinator, where she will oversee staff, H&R schedules, The Courtesy Desk,
Babysitting as well as serve as the communication point person between members and
the Health and Rec Department. She earned her certification from NASM, (National
Academy of Sports Medicine) and specializes in performance enhancement and corrective
exercise. She is a total body workout specialist, who helps people develop a strong core
and increase their mobility. Irene also has a degree in Modern Foreign Language
Education from Manhattan College, and speaks Greek, Spanish, Latin, and some French.
“My ultimate goal is to help people feel better about themselves,” says Irene. “Change
comes from within and I want to give our members the ability to have positive experiences so they can realize
their best. I always tell them: ‘Yes you can!’… motivating them to push themselves further than they thought possible.”

Introduction to Kabbalah - In Hebrew
The Kabbalah Centre
Saturday, October 23, 9 pm
Kabbalah is an ancient wisdom that reveals how the
universe and life work. On a literal level, the word
Kabbalah means “receiving.” It’s the study of how to
receive fulfillment in our lives. Kabbalah teaches
universal principles that apply to all peoples of all
faiths and all religions. The Kabbalistic lens offers a
rarely-seen perspective by which you can dramatically
improve the quality of your life – and the world around
you. In a world filled with “how-to” guides, The Power
of Kabbalah offers you the “why-to” guide.
Call Tammy at ext. 1427 for information.

Israeli Scouts
Tzofim Shevet Mezada, Tenafly, NJ
The Tzofim meet every Sunday between 4-6 pm at the JCC
Tzofim Tzabar (Israeli Scouts in the USA) works with
the youth of the Israeli community living in North
America with all of the activities conducted in Hebrew.
The program helps young people to develop physically,
intellectually and socially through age-specific
activities. The goal of the program is for young people
to experience the responsibility and leadership of
guiding others. Twice a year each troop goes to a sleep
away camp. Call Hagar, Youth Schlicha, ext. 1428.
Hagar Nadel is 22 years old
and comes to us from Israel.
Hagar was born in Eilat, the
southern most city in Israel.
Hagar joined the Israeli scouts
- the Tzofim - when she was
15 years old. She participated
in a year-long course for
counselors, after which she
became head counselor for
5th graders and later for 8th graders. During her senior
year, Hagar was in charge of all the youth counselors as
well as being responsible for planning and producing
major holiday events and trips for her Scout troop.
After high school Hagar volunteered in Haifa,
where she worked at the Neve Yosef Community
Center and later as a counselor at a school for the deaf.
She also volunteered at a Kindergarten where she
worked with children ages 1 to 5.
In October 2007 Hagar was recruited into the
Israeli Defense Forces. She served as an intelligence
field soldier in the Gaza Strip area for one year. Later
she was promoted to the Israeli Naval Academy, where
she was an instructor for young marines. After her
army service Hagar moved to Tel Aviv - the Israeli “Big
Apple.” She looks forward to being here and working
as the Israeli Shlicha in our community, with the UJA,
the Tzofim, and our JCC.

ENDOWMENTS: A LOVING LEGACY
Over the years, endowment funds have enabled the JCC to
enhance our programs and services and respond to challenges
within our community. We thank you for making a commitment
to our agency and our future.
Types of Endowments
Endowment funds allow you to give in personal and creative
ways. They can be named to:
• Honor the memory of a loved one
• Recognize a family member or friend on a special occasion
• Meet the goals of a family foundation
Benefits
• They can be earmarked for an existing JCC service or
program, allowing you to support a cause or interest that is
important to you.
• They can be named for a loved one, allowing you to honor or
remember someone meaningful in your life.
• They are gifts that “keep on giving.” Only a small amount of
your fund’s value is expended each year,
so the fund lives on — helping people in need
and perpetuating the memory of the person you are honoring.
• Can be tailored in many ways to meet your philanthropic
needs.

How to Establish an Endowment Fund
PRESIDENT

For a charitable, tax-deductible donation of $10,000 or more,
you can establish a personal endowment fund at the JCC. We
are continually evolving to meet the needs of our community
and we pride ourselves on our ability to offer programs and
services that enrich our members’ lives. The additional
revenue generated by personal endowment funds, makes it
possible to offer the new and dynamic programs. Please,
consider establishing a personal endowment and help us

Devotion: A Memoir

If You Knew Suzy
Thursday Dec. 16, 8pm
Private Home | $36*
by Susan Hirshman
by David Sax
By Dani Shapiro
By Katherine Rosman
The rules of successful dieting can be applied
to successful money management. In this
upbeat and informative guide, Susan
Hirshman offers women a three phase personalized plan that follows common dieting
programs to help them understand their
finances. Susan offers specific advice on topics such as how to develop realistic and attainable goals, smart financial decisions, and
determine the best way to invest.
As a journalist and life-long deli obsessive,
David Sax was alarmed by the decline of
Jewish delicatessen. Once the very center of
Jewish life, delis became endangered by
assimilation, homogenization, and health food
trends. He watched one beloved deli after
another shut down, only to be reopened as
some bland chain-restaurant. And so David
set out on a journey across the US and around
the world in search of authentic delicatessen.
Was it still possible to Save the Deli? Join
David as he investigates everything deli–its
history, diaspora, and next generation.
Shapiro, raised in an Orthodox home, left the
rules and rituals of her childhood behind to
live a modern, urban life as a working wife and
mother. It was only when her young son questioned her about her beliefs, that she realized
she did not know the answer. She embarked
on a journey which took her from meditation
retreats to yoga shalas to visits with her
Orthodox relatives. A spiritual detective story at
once deeply intimate and completely universal, Devotion tells the story of one woman
whose search for answers brings her home
again.
Mr. Sax is Los Angeles Times Bestseller, winner
of the 2010 Canadian Jewish Book Award for
Memoir and winner of a 2010 James Beard
Award.
The Today Show chose Devotion as one of their
best books; O Magazine called it a “must read.”
When their sixty-year-old mother Suzy died of
lung cancer, Katherine Rosman and her sister
Lizzie took their mom’s Visa card out for one
last spin. It was with this kind of irreverence
that they faced their mother’s death—and their
own struggle to balance her loss her with their
relief that she was no longer suffering. Driven
by grief and haunted by the idea that she
would only ever remember her mother as a
cancer victim, Wall Street Journal culture
reporter Rosman began digging into Suzy’s
past, using her professional acumen to
research an extremely personal subject: Who
was Suzy?

by Mordecai Dzikansky
When Joseph Weissmann divorced his wife at
78-years old and she was 75, he said:
“irreconcilable differences,” and saw real confusion in his wife’s eyes. “Irreconcilable differences?” she responded. “Of course there are
irreconcilable differences. What on earth does
that have to do with divorce?” Thus begins
The Three Weissmanns of Westport, a
sparkling contemporary adaptation of Sense
and Sensibility, which has already been
crowned “a modern-day Jewish Jane Austen”
by People’s Leah Rozen.
This first full-scale biography of one of the
most important and distinguished justices to
sit on the Supreme Court, reveals Louis D.
Brandeis the reformer, lawyer, and jurist, and
Brandeis the man, in all of his complexity, passion, and wit.
Meet Mordecai Dzikansky, the New York cop
who became a leading authority on the phenomenon of suicide bombing. Terrorist Cop:
The NYPD Jewish Cop Who Traveled the
World to Stop Terrorists is a heroic, poignant,
heart rendering story. In a rare departure for
homicide detectives, Morty Dzikansky
describes how he went undercover for the
NYPD as a rabbi to chase Torah thieves and
while on assignment in Israel, became the
world’s leading authority on suicide bombings.
Dzikansky discloses how his work led him to
become a different kind of victim from those
he found at the bombing sites.
Cathlene Schine is the author of The New
