RESEARCH PUBLICATIONS: I am the author or coauthor of 54 peer-reviewed research
publications and have been cited in the open literature more than 2700 times. These have transitioned
with my evolving interest from scientific research papers on coupled land-atmosphere interactions to
my current focus on globally engaged scholarship, international service learning, community

INTERNATIONAL RESEARCH AND ACADEMIC PROGRAM BUILDING:
U.S. Coordinator/Principal Investigator of the Southern African Regional Science Initiative:
SAFARI 2000, 1998-2003. Responsible for leading the planning, implementing, and
synthesizing of this multinational remote-sensing field campaign focused on a broad range of
phenomena related to land-atmosphere interactions and biogeochemical functioning across
southern Africa. This involved building consensus across an interdisciplinary community of
approximately two hundred scientists, including twenty-five graduate students, from sixteen
countries and with fifty institutional linkages. Findings were reported in three separate thematic
journal issues. More than 180-refereed project publications to date. I was also actively involved

with liaising with U.S. and regional governmental agencies, co-supervision of international
students, and dissemination of scientific results.
Director, Eastern/Southern African Virginia Networks & Associations – (E)SAVANA, 2002present. Multi-disciplinary, research, education and outreach program supporting engaged
scholarship with four partner universities in Africa since 2002. Focused on regional socioenvironmental systems. To date, over 460 U.S. based students, and 145 international colleagues
have been engaged with my interdisciplinary education abroad (11yrs) and intensive January
Term programs (8yrs). (E)SAVANA highlighted as a Strategic Initiative of the UVA College of
Arts and Sciences at the (2007); invited presentation at the NSF–sponsored Workshop for
Enhancing Collaborative Research on the Environment in Sub-Saharan Africa (2005): and
presented at the World Summit on Sustainable Development by the U.S. Department of State and
the National Academies of Sciences (2002).
Director, UVA Study Abroad in Southern Africa 2002-present. Developed program entitled
“People, Culture and Environment of Southern Africa” that, on average, lasts 4 weeks and
involves a 3.5:1 ratio of students from the U.S. and southern Africa. Course takes place in South
Africa and Mozambique and provides a broad introduction to cultural and environmental contexts.
Over its 11 years, the program has had 151 U.S. and 40 African student participants from
(E)SAVANA partners Alumnae have gone on to both private and public sectors (including Peace
Corps, AmeriCorps, and Teach for America).

four partner universities in Africa since 2002. While the initial focus was on regional
environmental issues, as Institutional Liaison, I expanded the scope of participating disciplines
to include nursing, public policy, anthropology, engineering, medicine, architecture, law and
commerce.

Director, UVA Study Abroad in Southern Africa 5/02-Present
Developer and Instructor of record for UVA Summer Study Abroad Program in Southern Africa
entitled “People, Culture and Environment of Southern Africa” that, on average, lasts a month,
and involves 15 students from the United States and 5 from Southern Africa. The course takes
place in both South Africa and Mozambique. The purpose of the course is to provide a broad
introduction in a comprehensive context.
 Program has involved participants from all (E)SAVANA partner institutions

Managed an international committee of distinguished scientists, conducted in-depth interviews
and site visits, compiled information concerning the external review of the IAI, organized three
External Review Committee meetings, drafted the external review report including findings and
recommendations, edited the report, debriefed IAI Directorate and Scientific Advisory
Committee post-completion of the report.
