Unit #: ____10____ Subject(s): _______Science__________ Grade(s): ____7___ Designer(s): Ellsworth, Harrington, Rodriguez STAGE 1 – DESIRED RESULTS Unit Title: __Forces in Action___________________________ Enduring Understandings: Students will understand that… An unbalanced force acting on an object changes its speed or direction of motion, or both. Friction opposes motion. Newton’s Laws describe the relationship between force, mass and distance. Inertia is the tendency of objects to resist any change in motion. Essential Questions: 1. How do unbalanced forces affect motion? 2. What determines the amount of friction that acts on an object? 3. How can Newton’s Laws of Motion help describe the relationship between force, mass and distance? 4. How does inertia affect the motion of an object? Students will know: Forces can change the speed and/or direction of an object. Friction is a force that acts in the opposite direction of a moving object. Newton’s Laws of Motion describe the relationship between force, mass and distance with moving objects. Inertia causes objects to tend to keep their state of motion. Students will be able to: Compare and contrast balanced and unbalanced forces. Apply the principles of Newton’s Laws to the motion of objects. Determine if friction will be less or greater given a certain set of conditions. Describe how inertia affects the motion of an object. STAGE 1– Standards 7.P.1 Understand motion, the effects of forces on motion and the graphical representations of motion. 7.P.1.2 Explain the effects of balanced and unbalanced forces acting on an object (including friction, gravity and magnets). Technology Standards 7.TT.1 Use technology and other resources for assigned tasks 7.TT.1.1 Use appropriate technology tools and other resources to access information. Use appropriate technology tools and other resources to organize information (e.g. graphic organizers, databases, spreadsheets, and desktop 7.TT.1.2 publishing). Use appropriate technology tools and other resources to design products to share information with others (e.g. multimedia presentations, Web 2.0 7.TT.1.3 tools, graphics, podcasts, and audio files) 7.SE.1 Apply responsible behaviors when using information and technology resources. 7.SE.1.1 Apply ethical behavior (copyright, not plagiarizing, proper netiquette) when using resources.
