the­Saint­louis­art­Museum­was­founded­in­1879,­at­
the­close­of­a­decade­that­saw­the­establishment­of­art­
museums­in­great­cities­across­the­eastern­half­of­the
country.­what­began­as­a­collection­of­assorted­plaster
casts,­electrotype­reproductions,­and­other­examples­of
“good­design”­in­various­media­rapidly­gave­way­to­a­
varied­collection­of­original­works­of­art­spanning­five
millennia­and­six­continents.­today,­the­quality­and
breadth­of­the­Museum’s­collection­place­it­among­the
best­institutions­of­its­kind.
distinguished­architect­Cass­Gilbert­designed­the­Museum’s
Main­Building­to­house­the­Palace­of­art,­the­only­surviving
permanent­building­constructed­for­the­1904­world’s­Fair.
the­new­east­Building,­opened­in­June­2013,­was­designed
by­noted­British­architect­Sir­david­Chipperfield,­with
technical­assistance­from­St.­louis-based­hoK.
