When: Can Collection Period is October 1 ‐ 31, 2008. Why: The Cans for Cash City Recycling Challenge heightens community awareness about the many environmental benefits of aluminum can recycling: 9 Recycling aluminum cans is an easy way to reduce global warming. 9 It takes 95% less energy to recycle an aluminum can than to create a new can from raw materials. 9 Aluminum is 100% recyclable and is the only material that the recycled value exceeds the cost of recycling it. How: The City is planning a number of ways to promote the Cans for Cash competition. In addition to cans collected through the City’s residential curbside recycling program and local redemption centers, the City is promoting a community‐based can drive involving Irvine Unified School District schools, the Orange County Conservation Corps, and local businesses. Each pound of aluminum cans a school recycles = $1 back to the school. Businesses are encouraged to adopt a local K‐12 school as a Partner in Recycling to help in their efforts to raise money and awareness for aluminum can recycling. For a complete list of aluminum can drop‐off locations and more information on how to participate, please visit www.cityofirvine.org. The City of Irvine and Irvine Unified School District are partnering with the Orange County Conservation Corps during the Cans for Cash Recycling Challenge to collect aluminum cans recycled at Irvine schools and reward schools for their participation.
