Jigsaw visual identity guidelines
Welcome
Jigsaw is leading the change in youth mental
health. Through Research, Engagement and
Services, Jigsaw operates in conjunction with
the HSE and other partners. We represent
an innovative approach to promoting and
supporting youth mental health.
About Us
We were established in 2006 by Dr Tony Bates
as Headstrong: The National Centre for Youth
Mental Health. Our local services were called
Jigsaw. In 2016, we all became Jigsaw.
We exist to change how Ireland thinks about
and responds to young people’s mental health,
through Research, Engagement and Services.
We work with communities across Ireland in
providing mental health supports for young
people aged 12-25, and to change how Ireland
thinks about youth mental health.
Jigsaw and Young People
Through Research we deepen our
understanding of young people’s journeys, and
rigorously evaluate the benefits they derive
from our services. Our My World Survey was
the first national study of youth mental health.
Almost 15,000 young people took part in the
first My World Survey, and the data captured is
used to improve services and supports to meet
the needs of young people.
Through Engagement we work closely with
young people and their communities, including
them at every stage of design, planning and
recruitment. We support them to speak in their
own voice and together we work to influence
national policy and public discussion.
Through our Services we provide free,
confidential, brief mental health supports
for young people aged 12-25. Designed in
partnership with young people and staffed by
trained mental health professionals, we ensure
that our young people get the right help through
joined-up work with other services.
Jigsaw Services
Our first service opened its doors in Galway
in 2008. By 2011 we had grown to a total of
ten Jigsaw Services around the country,
including in counties Donegal, Kerry, Meath,
Offaly, Roscommon, and in Dublin in Clondalkin,
Dublin 15, North Fingal, and Tallaght. Up until
the end of 2015, our Jigsaw Services have
helped more than 13,000 young people to date.
We believe every community deserves a
Jigsaw Service, and we are working to make
this happen.
The success of our Services, built on
their strong foundation of Research and
Engagement, has led to Jigsaw becoming
the name that resonates with young people,
politicians and parents. A name strongly
associated with making a real difference to
the lives of young people within communities
across Ireland. This helped lead to the
achievement of a major milestone when in
2015 we were included in the HSE National
Service Plan.
In 2016, the year of our tenth anniversary, we
changed our name from Headstrong to Jigsaw.
This was in recognition of the incredible efforts
of our supporters, staff and Youth Advisory
Panels in making the name of our service ‘the
word’ in the national conversation about youth
mental health. We know that Jigsaw works.
Working together under the one name, we
aim to set the course for a future where every
community across Ireland will have access to
the support that Jigsaw offers – We are Jigsaw.

Who
Where
Jigsaw is The National Centre for Youth
Mental Health and exists to change how
Ireland thinks about and responds to young
people’s mental health, through Research,
Engagement and Services.
We operate Jigsaw Services in 10 local
communities around the country, counties
Donegal, Galway, Kerry, Meath, Offaly,
Roscommon, and in Dublin in Clondalkin,
Dublin 15, North Fingal, and Tallaght. We
have several more Jigsaw Services in
development. Our Research, Engagement,
National Jigsaw Services, and support teams
are based at our National Office in Dublin.
We recognise that young people,
communities and government all have a role
and contribution in developing a supportive
environment to foster mental health in young
people. We strive to innovate, challenge
and apply best practice in youth mental
health across Ireland. As an evidence-led
organisation we research and evaluate all of
our activities.

partnership with young people, and staffed
by trained mental health professionals, our
services ensure that our young people get
the right help through joined-up work with
other services.
We know from our research that young
people are experiencing high levels of
distress, and don’t know where to turn for
help. Evidence that shows most serious
mental health issues in later life start from
problems in adolescence (12–25 years) and
that if young people get help to deal with
issues early they can avoid developing
serious mental health problems.
Jigsaw gives young people a voice to talk
about their concerns and find solutions that
work for them. We provide somewhere to
turn to, and someone to talk to.

legal name under which we are registered
with the Companies Registration Office.
Jigsaw is our trading name, the name under
which we promote our work and services to
the general public. It’s Jigsaw that we use
when talking about the work we do and

the right help through joined-up work
with other services.
Jigsaw unites communities to listen to
and work with young people. This helps young
people to feel more connected to where

Jigsaw visual identity guidelines
The Jigsaw logotype seen on page 7 was
designed to reflect what is at the heart of
our organisation: young people.
Young people have potential, energy, creativity,
boldness and sometimes they face challenges
in ways that are unique to them. The identity
embraces difference and stands proud,
echoing the sentiment that it is okay to talk
about and seek help for youth mental health.
The logotype uses letterforms that are not
uniform, they are individual and different,
however they stand together in a unifying
solid group. They reflect different stories and
different conversations.
Visual applications of the brand must follow
the Identity Guidelines to ensure all our
communications are consistent. Consistent
visual communication allows us to be
recognised and clearly understood by those
we support and those who support us.
Please read the guidelines carefully before
using versions of the logotype, which are
available in formats compatible with Mac and
PC. For more details on file formats available,
see page 35.

The logotype in colour
The Jigsaw logotype forms part of our
overall visual identity and communicates our
personality to our audience.
The full colour logo and tagline is the preferred
option for all communication materials and
should appear on a white background.
Jigsaw without the tagline can be used in
limited circumstances, namely for internal and
external signage in Jigsaw Services.
The Jigsaw logotype has been designed for on
screen and print. CMYK files are used for full
colour print. RGB files are used for on screen.
Please note that Pantone references are
provided where their use is recommended.
Please refer to page 14 for detailed
information on the full colour palette.
The horizontal version of the logotype
shown may be used when minimal vertical
height is available.

logotype in colour
The Jigsaw Services logotypes are created
using Local Gothic and the orange and blue
from the colour palette. The tagline is in
7540 grey.
The Jigsaw Services logotypes are for use with
materials specific to the individual services, or
for activities organised by individual services.
For materials or activities that involve more
than one service, the national Jigsaw logotype
should be used. For example, if Jigsaw
Clondalkin and Jigsaw Tallaght work together
on an event, for promotional materials you
would use the national Jigsaw logotype, rather
than using both Jigsaw Services logotypes.
The tagline should always appear in
conjunction with the logotype.
When creating a new Jigsaw Services
logotype, the communications team
should take care to choose across the
varying letterforms available within Local
Gothic to allow for a logotype that is
balanced in appearance.

Jigsaw visual identity guidelines
A ‘boilerplate’ in marketing, public relations and
communications refers to an organisation’s
standard description that is used repeatedly
without change. The Jigsaw boilerplate is
concise and offers an “in a nutshell” description
of our organisation.
The Jigsaw boilerplate is an important part
of our visual identity and should be used on all
of our communications except for Jigsaw
Services material directed toward the young
people we support.
We have designed a standard positioning
structure and display layout for the boilerplate,
see page 18.

of type starts on the left hand margin that is 18mm from the edge of the sheet.

Every letter should be folded at the base line of the ‘conversation’ graphic this is to ensure correct
presentation and fit within a DL envelope.

Capital letters should not be used to form whole words, but lower case type can be made bold or
underlined if you wish to draw attention to them. Single spacing should also be used.

Colour usage
Our logo colour palette and primary colour
palette can be used in print and online
communications. This includes Jigsaw Services
communications such as posters, leaflets,
signage and also the Jigsaw website. These
colours work best on a white background.
Our background colour palette, should be
reserved for high level documents such as
the annual report. The greys work well as
background colours, combined with display text
from the primary colour palette.
Our additional colour palette should be
reserved for online usage, or in print where
additional colours are required for graphics
such as maps, bar charts and pie charts.
Please ensure that there is enough contrast
between the background colour and display
text colours, to ensure maximum legibility.

To maintain a consistent typographic look
throughout all professionally printed
Jigsaw communications, it is necessary
to use typefaces that are compatible with
the logotype.
We have carefully chosen fonts for use in
Jigsaw communications.
Local Gothic
The typeface Local Gothic should be used for
display type and large headings that create
interest. It should never be used as body text.
Display type is used to entice a reader into text
copy, to create a mood or feeling, or to announce
important information. They are intended to
stand out.
Apex New
Apex New can be used by professional
designers for body text, sub headings and
highlight text and should be set no smaller than
9pt on 11pt leading. Jigsaw staff, producing work
in-house may substitute with the font Calibri
which comes as standard and does not require
purchasing. Please see page 23.
Text typefaces are easy to read in long blocks
of copy. They are designed to be legible and
readable at small sizes.

This font has varying letterforms which give it a uniqueness and a sense of individuality.
Local Gothic was designed by Schwartzco, Inc.
based in New York. It is characterised by its
varying letterforms which give it a uniqueness
and a sense of individuality.

Correspondence plays an important part in shaping the image of your company with your clients.
That is why every letter should be typed carefully according to simple, consistent rules; Every line
of type starts on the left hand margin that is 18mm from the edge of the sheet.
Please note the inclusion of the Partner strip
at the base of the page. Relevant logos can be
inserted here and must appear no larger than
the HSE logo and not beyond the right margin
of the letter.
Letter writing tips and margin information
appears in your Word Template.
The other margins should be set at these measurements:
Top margin - 55mm
Left hand margin - 18mm
Right hand margin - 40mm
Bottom margin - 50mm
Use existing Word templates as a guide.
Every letter should be folded at the base line of the ‘conversation’ graphic this is to ensure correct
presentation and fit within a DL envelope.
The typeface should no larger than 10 point on any part of the letter. [This letter is typed in Arial 9pt/11pt].
Capital letters should not be used to form whole words, but lower case type can be made bold or
underlined if you wish to draw attention to them. Single spacing should also be used.
Omit all punctuation in references, addresses and headings except when essential to
reading sense.
Your co-operation in following these typing rules will help create a better impression with your clients and
ensure your investment in your communications is maintained consistently throughout your organisation.

Environmental Graphics
The interiors and exteriors of our Jigsaw
Services provides great scope for the public
expression of the brand. Care should be taken
to respect the surrounding streetscape/
architecture.
The ‘Conversation’ can be employed effectively here. Words can be taken from it and placed
for greatest impact and relevance.
All colours can be used, but should be done
sparingly, sometimes it may be more appropriate to choose a single colour as below.
The ‘conversation’ elements should be used in
a single colour only on window decals.
