1 Society of Aeronautics and Rocketry SOAR Sub-Scale Rocket Build Details **Created by Jamie Waters and Logan Sveum, hope this helps! ** Quick Word Okay, so the purpose of this document I hope is blatantly obvious, but just in case I’ll go over a few things and thoughts on the matter. So, we as SOAR want to begin the fabrication of our subscale Rocket that will need to be flown for the NASA Student Launch Initiative (in which details can be found in the update that was posted to the “important-messages” channel in slack, and just about anywhere else). I say “need” to be flown because actually yes, we need to. NASA wants to see that our rocket design is optimal, and will actually work. They want to see all this “before” we actually build our fullscale rocket and bring it out to the competition in Huntsville (makes sense). So that being said, we want to begin building our Sub-Scale ASAP. This document is a means to get those who are interested informed on some basic info about how we as SOAR go about building a rocket. Most of the information about how to “actually” build a rocket will be hands on, and this document is only meant in an informative sense mostly about how you get to where we build, when, why, blah blah. So more bureaucratic than anything…sorry. But don’t you worry, if you decide you would like to help us, I promise you’ll learn a lot from this subscale build, so much so that you’ll be able to build a level one rocket and get certified! So off now and “learn you some stuff” about how to get started building rockets. Who Rick Waters. He is the man who has been such a huge help to our organization for as long as I (Logan) have been a member in SOAR. He is the guy who has taught me 99% of what I know about rockets, and I know he’ll have a blast teaching you as well. What Sub-scale rocket yo. Yes, clearly this document is about building the sub-scale rocket, but beyond that it is about how you can get involved with building rockets in general and ultimately SOAR’s full-scale rocket this year for NASA. vvvvvvv Go to the next page, there’s more! vvvvvvv 2 Society of Aeronautics and Rocketry When July 23rd will be the first subscale build day starting at 10 AM and go into the afternoon. We want to begin this build as soon as we possibly can. The quicker we can build our rockets for NASA, the more time we can spend on the AGSE (Autonomous Ground Support Equipment). So please if you are interested in building rockets come to a build day. This will not be the only build day, but the more you come to the more you’ll learn. Where Rick’s warehouse (Directions below)! Clearly this isn’t on campus, I know. For a few reasons: 1. We currently don’t have our warehouse up and running. This is due to us JUST “really” getting access to it about a month and a half ago. But of course, plans are to clean it out on Saturday July 9th after the AGSE meeting! (If you are reading this after that date, then 1. I’m slow and lazy and didn’t send it out to everyone before then or 2. You didn’t read this “important” document RIGHT AWAY? Shame.) 2. Rick is a major asset to our team and his knowledge is indispensable. Making anything easier on him is our goal. So the place he works during the day seems to be a wonderful place! Directions: Address: 10770 N 46th St, Tampa, FL 33617 Pictographic directions as if you were driving South on North 46th Street: If you see this scenery below in figure 1, then you are approaching the Warehouse on the RIGHT!! 3 Society of Aeronautics and Rocketry Figure 1: North 46th Street, approaching from the north going south. Below in figure 2 is where you will turn RIGHT. Figure 2: The right turn into Ricks Warehouse. Below in figure 3 is the entrance to the VA clinic where Rick works. The VERY first left is where you will turn, then make another immediate left and park as shown (in the amazing circle) in figure 3. 4 Society of Aeronautics and Rocketry Figure 3: PARKING!! Why Well, you know…to build rockets? (Thought I should finish the “Who, What, When, Where, and Why….”) Other Information If you know you are coming: If you know you will be coming to the build day on July 23rd please write your name in this google doc so we can get an idea of how many people are coming and driving arrangements. When you get there: After you have parked, walk west (further into the VA eye clinic) until you see a little ally way on your left. You should have noticed in pulling in. In this ally way, you should see a wonderful tan Chrysler van. Walk into this ally and on the left there should be a two doors and a garage door. Go to the door past the garage door and knock. Conclusion I hope this document was somewhat helpful. As always, if you have any questions, feel free to contact either of us (contact information below) about anything involving how to get there, rocket building, you name it.
