The title of an essay should be specific and short!
Essay Topic:
What conflicts exist in The Giver by Lois Lowry?
Essay Title:
A. The Giver by Lois Lowry
OR
B. Conflicts in The Giver by Lois Lowry
Which is best? Why?
essaywriting1
A thesis statement is a crucial part of the essay.
It tells the reader what the essay is going to be about.
The best way to form a thesis statement is to restate the
question in your statement.
Keep it simple!
Do NOT use first person!
Example: What is the main conflict Jonas experiences in
The Giver by Lois Lowry?

essaywriting1
The thesis statement will be the LAST
sentence of the introduction.
That sentence MUST STAND ALONE!!!!
That means it clearly tells the reader what
the essay is about ALL BY ITSELF.
EVERYTHING YOU
WRITE GOES
BACK TO THE
THESIS
STATEMENT. THIS
IS THE MOST
ESSENTIAL PART
OF YOUR ESSAY!
If I read this sentence, I know what the entire essay is going to be
about. I don't have to read anything else in the introduction.
The main conflict Jonas experiences in The Giver by Lois
Lowry is person against himself.
essaywriting1
NEVER USE FIRST PERSON IN A FORMAL ESSAY,
UNLESS IT SPECIFICALLY ASKS FOR IT (OUR ESSAY
DOES NOT. THEREFORE, DO NOT USE IT!)
SO....STAY AWAY FROM STATEMENTS SUCH AS:
IN MY OPINION....
I BELIEVE...
I personally despise this
I WILL SHOW YOU...
one! I advise you stay
away from it.
AS YOU CAN SEE, I HAVE PROVEN...
IN CONCLUSION, I FEEL...

WHEN WRITING AN ESSAY, KEEP IN MIND THAT

essaywriting1
DO NOT USE THE

FIRST OF ALL, IT'S TWO WORDS!
SECONDLY, IT'S INFORMAL...AND DEAD. USE YOUR

WHAT YOU WANT TO SAY WITHOUT USING A LOT IN
YOUR WRITING!!!!!!!

about..." "All in all..."
KEEP IT FORMAL- ( No side commentary)
NEVER USE THE TERM "LIKE."

NO FLOATING QUOTES- Introduce them and make sure that the quote
is relevant to the topic you are addressing.

Major CHANGE in ESSAY:
Prompt:
Bullying may have a devastating effect on those who are bullied if gone
unchecked. In an attempt to curb this controversial matter, should the
method of control be punitive or preventative?
Use explicit and inferred evidence from the texts to support your claim.
Be sure to acknowledge a counter claim and include evidence from your
sources.
MORE SPECIFIC TO THE TASK &
REQUIRES A MORE FIRM POSITION.
essaywriting1
Define the term PUNITIVE and PREVENTATIVE in your class notes.
PUNITIVE- damages or exemplary damages are damages intended to reform or
deter the defendant and others from engaging in conduct similar to that which
formed the basis of the lawsuit.
This can be viewed as punishment. When someone does something
considered BAD they are made an example out of. Actions are taken
AFTER the incident.
PREVENTATIVE- Intended or used to prevent or hinder; acting as an obstacle;
Carried out to deter expected aggression by hostile forces.
Well, it is in the term it self. This addresses measures used BEFORE an
incident occurs. Precautionary.
essaywriting1
Let's classify the means of
control that have been addressed
so far in class.
For your essay you will have to
establish which approach would
better control/curb this
damaging issue.
CONSIDER which action would
yield the best result. Your
analysis will focus on WHY
(inferential & critical thinking).
PUNITIVE
ex: Suspension
PREVENTATIVE
ex: Zero Tolerance
