Welcome!
Dear Players,
We are excited to welcome you to the 2016 Northern Cup! This year the tournament is being held
in Durham on the weekend of 12th-13th November. All teams are required to arrange their own
transport and accommodation so we have put together this guide to help you out.
Further information, including a schedule and the tournament policies, will be available in the
player guide which will be released in the coming weeks. Please use the contact form if you have
any other questions.
Thanks,

Please note the following about the accommodation listed in the table above:
1. Costs calculated over two nights for two people sharing using booking.com or a similarly
cheap alternative. All costs and availability valid as of 28.09.16, and are subject to change.
2. Distance is minutes walking (unless otherwise stated) to Belmont Community School, as
measured using Google Maps.
Unfortunately, the committee cannot guarantee the quality of any accommodation listed in the
table, and so you must do your own research when booking the rooms.
General Advice and Tips
●
If you are booking rooms for a large number of people, it is worth finding out whether you
can make a deal – for example, to include a free breakfast, or to take 10% of the final
price. This can only often be done if you contact the accommodation directly rather than
booking through a third-party site. It may also not be possible to do this for larger hotels.
●
It is worth booking accommodation from Friday onwards – even though it might be cheaper
to only book for Saturday night, the tournament will likely start very early and it is better
to already be in Durham to ensure that we can stick to the schedule.
●
Often sites like www.booking.com are cheaper to book through than on the websites of the
accommodation providers themselves.
●
If you make a last-minute decision to attend Northern Cup 2016, it is worth checking out
the website www.laterooms.com as it often offers hotel accommodation at discounted
prices. While this will inevitably be more expensive than booking in advance, and there is
no guarantee of availability, it is another option – especially for spectators.
●
Be aware of the fine print – it is often the case that smaller hotels refuse to take large
bookings online and so you may have to book in smaller groups and under different
people/cards.
●
Look out for booking charges if you apply online as they may be listed separately from the
initial price given.
TRANSPORT GUIDE
Public Transport:
Trains
Durham has a singular train station which takes you to the centre of the city, about a 40 minute
walk from the pitches. However, if you take a taxi directly to the venue it takes approximately 7
minutes, though allow time for traffic. In addition Durham station is very near the central bus
station. See below for more information on taxis or buses.
Tip: it can be cheaper to split your train journey to Durham (from the south) at Leeds or York.
Buses
The bus station nearest to Belmont is the Sportsmans Arms. Please be aware that if you are
staying in the city centre buses do not run on Sunday mornings early enough to get you to the
pitches, so ensure you have alternative arrangements in place.
●
From the bus station take bus 20, which takes 15 minutes and runs every 30 minutes.
●
Bus 20 route stops within easily walkable distance from the Marriott or Radisson Blu.
