PRESENTING SPONSOR
WELCOME SHALOM
W
elcome to the 23rd Annual JCC Sports Dinner! Tonight's event is the major
yearly fundraiser for the JCC and raises crucial funds that allow our Centre
to continue serving the entire Vancouver Community. Thanks to your
support the JCC can provide subsidies for many of our programs. We take great pride
in the services we provide to children, our community's youth, disabled adults,
young families and seniors.
We are also here to celebrate Jay Triano, our Jack Diamond Sports Personality of the
Year.
What an astonishing basketball career Jay is having! Whether as a player, VP of Pro
Scouting or as Head Coach, Jay continues to inspire us all. He is the first Canadianborn Head Coach in the NBA, and is currently an Assistant Coach with the Portland
Trailblazers and Head Coach of Team Canada. As a player, he has been captain of
the Canadian National Team and represented Canada at 3 Olympics, captaining the
team on two occasions. Jay’s professional accomplishments are plain to see, but
what is equally impressive is his volunteer work with Basketball Without Borders,
which provides basketball coaching and encourages positive social change in the
areas of education, health and well-being. We are truly privileged to have Jay as our
honouree tonight. Hearty congratulations to Jay for being named the Jack Diamond
Sports Personality of the Year.
To our sponsors and guests, thank you for making this phenomenal annual event
possible. Without our sponsors this event could not happen; the JCC is grateful
for your ongoing support.
Enjoy the evening!

WELCOME FROM THE CHAIR
W
elcome to the 23rd Annual JCC Sports Dinner. I am
truly honoured to be your Dinner Chair for the 4th
time and to assist in the most exciting charity and
social sports event in our city. Our volunteer Sports Dinner
Committee has excelled this year in bringing together all the
necessary components to make tonight one of the best evenings
we have ever had in our 23-year history of this great event.
One of my objectives as Chair is to provide you, our valued
guests, with an evening filled with first class entertainment, a
superb meal and an event that will raise substantial and important funds to support
the worthy cause of the Jewish Community Centre. We have worked hard to ensure that
these goals are exceeded tonight and that you leave with a big smile on your face.
This year we are thrilled to recognize Canadian basketball legend Jay Triano as the Jack
Diamond Sports Personality of the Year Award recipient. Jay is an ambassador of the
game as an accomplished player and coach. Jay is also extremely charitable with his
personal time through volunteer work with Basketball Without Borders. We congratulate Jay on the honour of receiving the 2016 Jack Diamond Sports Personality of the
Year Award.
It is also with great pleasure that I welcome our keynote speaker, NBA Legend, Sir
Charles Barkley! We are looking forward to having Charles share many stories from his
illustrious basketball career and his time with perhaps the greatest team ever assembled: the 1992 USA Olympic “Dream Team!” No doubt, Sir Charles will not hold back his
opinions of the players, the game and where it is today. Be ready for what is sure to be
an extremely eventful evening!
Last but not least, I want to extend a special welcome to our new sponsors to our outstanding family of corporate partners and to thank our returning sponsors for their
continued support. It is through the participation and financial contribution of our
sponsors that the JCC is able to continue offering a variety of programs for children
and adults in Greater Vancouver. We applaud our sponsors’ commitment towards building a stronger and healthier community. I encourage you to review this program and
to recognize our valued sponsors without whom our dinner would not succeed.
Thank you all for joining us tonight – enjoy the evening!

JACK DIAMOND AWARD
T
onight, as we celebrate the presentation of the Jack Diamond
Sports Personality of the Year Award, we also remember the
man for whom the award was named.
Jack Diamond (1909-2001), was a leader in business, a devoted
family man, an inspiring community citizen, and to the world of
sports the father of modern-day horse racing in British Columbia.
Always full of his trademark energy, Mr. Diamond had been an
up-front fixture at these dinners. Space doesn't permit us to tell the
complete story of his great life, but here are some highlights.
A leading member of the city's Jewish community, Jack was a
philanthropist and distinguished himself with several gifts to Simon
Fraser University, and a donation of land to the BC Cancer Agency. He was a co-founder of Vancouver's Variety Club and the BC Heart Foundation, a Chancellor of SFU, a Freeman of the City,
an honorary Doctor of Laws, and a Companion of the Order of Canada.
The Jack Diamond Award recognizes an individual who has consistently demonstrated a competitive and cooperative spirit, who has excelled in the field of sport, and who has made a positive
contribution to our community. We congratulate Jay Triano for his accomplishments, as we honour him tonight.

JAY TRIANO
2016 Jack Diamond Award Recipient
e are honored to present the 2016 Jack Diamond
Sports Personality of the Year Award to Canada’s
own Jay Triano. Successful on both international
and professional levels, Jay is an extremely accomplished person. He is more than deserving of this award
with his multiple Olympic appearances and his tenure as the
first Canadian-born head coach in NBA history. At the top
of his profession, those who know him well credit Triano’s
incredible work ethic and magnetic personality for getting
him there. An Ontario native, Triano lived in Vancouver for
25 years. He played for Simon Fraser University and then
went on to play 11 years for Team Canada representing us twice as a player and once
as head coach.
W
Triano began his coaching career in 1985 at his alma mater (SFU) as Assistant Coach
before becoming Head Coach in 1988. Seven years later he started working for the Vancouver Grizzlies as Director of Community Relations and colour commentator for their
radio broadcasts. By 1998 he was the Head Coach of the Canadian Men's National Basketball Team. Two years later, he became an Assistant Coach for the Toronto Raptors,
becoming the first Canadian-born coach in the NBA. Jay would later become Head
Coach of the Raptors where he served from 2008 to 2011 before stepping into the role
of Vice President of Pro Scouting. In August 2012, Jay was named as an Assistant Coach
for the Portland Trail Blazers and in the same week was also named Head Coach of
Team Canada for the second time in his career.
This past summer he led the Canadian Team to a silver medal in the Pan American
Games, and a bronze medal in the Tournament of the Americas in Mexico.
Jay is generous with his time in his volunteer work with Basketball Without Borders
which provides basketball coaching and encourages positive social change in the areas
of education, health and well-being.
With his three children spread around the Pacific Northwest Jay and his partner Sheri
share their life with their four-legged friend Tonka enjoying wine, golf, watching baseball and visiting different Major League parks around the country. They split their time
between Portland, OR and Toronto, ON.
We congratulate Jay on the honour of being the 2016 Jack Diamond Sports Personality
of the Year Award.

WAYNE NORTON
Merit Award Recipient
I
t is an honour to be asked to say a few words about
the worthy recipient of the JCC Sports Dinner Merit
Award, Wayne Norton. I had the pleasure working with
Wayne from 1970-1974 when he was the Athletic Director and more importantly have become lifelong friends with
him. In 1993, many years after he had left the JCC, Wayne
became a founding member of the JCC Sports Dinner.
Wayne's involvement helped to build the strong foundation
for this annual event which has contributed to it becoming
one of the most prestigious dinners today.
Wayne's professional baseball career began in 1961 when he signed with the New York
Yankees. Later he played for the Kansas City/Oakland organizations and in 1977, he
became the Executive Director for Baseball BC. Throughout his career, he demonstrated his commitment to giving back to community and helping youngsters and
adults excel in baseball. He became Manager and Coach of the Canadian Senior
National Team as well as founded the Canadian Junior National Team and National
Baseball Institute. In 1975 he managed Canada's Pam Am baseball team. He joined the
Mariners as their Canadian and European Scouting Supervisor. During that time he
was named International Scout of the Year and twice Canadian Scout of the Year.
Due to Wayne's tremendous network he developed close friendships with the likes of
Pat Gillick (General Manager of four Major League Baseball teams including the
Toronto Blue Jays during their World Series wins). This network became a tremendous
asset for the JCC Sports Dinner. Wayne was able to engage Pat in becoming a "friend"
of the Sports Dinner which resulted in securing the involvement of many notables
such as Ryan Dempster, Marty Springstead and Jim Bouton.
Wayne's association as Athletic Director of the JCC (1966-77) influenced his caring and
support for the Jewish Community Centre. He became a champion of the Sports Dinner.
The only other person who received the prestigious JCC Sports Dinner Merit Award was
Pat Gillick in 2006 which was presented on behalf of the JCC by Wayne.
Wayne’s current fight with Lou Gehrig's disease continues to demonstrate his determination dealing with adversity. All of us salute Wayne and congratulate him and his
family with tonight's special JCC Sports Dinner Merit Award. He is a true Mensch.

SIR CHARLES BARKLEY
Keynote Speaker
t is a privilege to welcome our 2016 Keynote Speaker
Charles Barkley to the 23rd Annual JCC Sports Dinner.
NBA Hall of Famer and 11-time All-Star, number 34,
Charles Barkley has been named one of the NBA’s 50
Greatest Players and was a member of the 1992 USA Olympic
“Dream Team.” “Sir” Charles Barkley, as he is affectionately
known, remains a larger than life personality and as you will
see tonight is the consummate entertainer. He is widely respected for his work with the Emmy Award-winning sports
television program NBA on TNT and his reputation for being
one of the most “quotable” in all of sports is well earned.
We have no doubt that it will be an evening to be remembered.
I
Born in Leeds, Alabama in 1963, Barkley was both a high school and college star. Not
initially noticed by the college scouts, Barkley grew 6 inches in 12 months in his senior
year and averaged 19.1 points and 17.9 rebounds per game leading his school to a 263 record. Barkley wowed college scouts in the conference semifinals by scoring 26
points and ended up a first round draft pick by the Philadelphia 76ers in 1984. In his
rookie year he averaged 14 points and 8.6 rebounds per game with teammates Julius
Erving and Moses Malone. Barkley credits Malone for taking him under his wing and
teaching him, among other things, how to lead by example. By the 1987-1988 season
Barkley was named to the All-NBA team for the first of 4 consecutive years when he
went on to join the US Olympic team in 1992, helping the infamous “Dream Team” win
the gold medal. Afterwards, Barkley was sent to the Phoenix Suns where he won the
MVP award and led the club to the 1993 NBA Finals. In 2000, he retired as the fourth
player in NBA history to achieve 20,000 points, 10,000 rebounds and 4,000 assists.
He is famous not only for his talent but also his courtside antics and quick wit. He
joined talk show TNT in 2003 and currently works as a studio analyst for Inside the
NBA along with Kenny Smith, Shaquille O’Neal and host Ernie Johnson. In his transition
from a basketball star to a television personality he has reached Pop-Icon status. It
has been said that he “shoots from the hip and speaks from the heart.”
Welcome Charles, we are thrilled to have you join us!
