Auburn Elementary Second Graders Create Volcanos
Second graders created volcanoes out of salt dough. By adding baking soda and vinegar they
were able to create an eruption and watch the path of the lava flow. Students were able to
make connections to both their science and social studies units about the characteristics of
land forms and how water flows down them.

Mackensen Elementary Students Experiment
Students in Mrs. Novak's class enjoyed learning hands on what happens when you combine
baking soda and vinegar. Prior to the experiment students made hypotheses about how much
baking soda and vinegar would make the best eruption. After conducting the experiment they
drew and wrote about their results and decided if they agreed with their hypothesis or if not
what changes they would make.

Linsday Elementary Third Grade Students
Enjoy Friendship Feast
After reading a variety of different books about
friendship, kindness and celebrating our differences, the third grade students at Linsday enjoyed a Friendship Feast together on February
10th. Students brought their favorite family dishes (treats included chicken biryani, rice, veggie
pizza, pbj sandwiches, appetizers and LOTS of
yummy desserts!) It was a great way to spend
a Friday afternoon with friends.
Mackensen Elementary Thinking
Thursday STEM Challenges
Mrs. Marciniak's students love Thinking Thursday STEM Challenges! During this time, they
create, collaborate, and think critically while striving to
solve various STEM-related challenges.
When it comes to STEM, thinking and creating is
key! Thinking Thursday STEM challenges allow kids to turn simple household items into something new; something
they worked together to create. Their creations then become the building blocks for their own innovative invention.
For this activity, kids used a variety of supplies to create hills that would project a sled the farthest
distance. They measured, planned, drew diagrams, and worked cooperatively to create their designs. Then it's time to create! Trial and error is part of the game, and mistakes are okay, it's how
we learn and grow. Following the activity the kids reflected on their experience and discussed what
went well, what did not go well, and what they might do differently next time. This was fun for all!

School Community Important at
Auburn Elementary
Auburn Elementary PTO schedules one family event each
month to celebrate the spirit of school community. Nothing
breaks up the long, cold winter months better than warm
indoor activities like family bowling (Friday, January 20th at
Monitor Lanes) and swimming (Friday, February 10th at
Midland Community Center).
Western Middle School 8th Grade Students Receive
Guidance From American Chemical Society
Western Middle School's 8th grade students examined Earth's atmosphere with
the guidance of the American Chemical Society (ACS). ACS volunteer, Gina Malczewski, presented students with some basic information related to Earth's atmosphere, including the exploration of the atmosphere's gaseous components. After
the presentation, students investigated properties of the gases that make up
Earth's atmosphere through different hands-on activities. In one activity, students
compared the time required to change a phenolphthalein indicator solution using
carbon dioxide from dry ice and then using the carbon dioxide exhaled through their own lungs. Students also filled
one balloon with a chunk of dry ice and another balloon with air exhaled from a student. Students waited for the dry
ice to transfer into its gas form (carbon dioxide) and then both balloons were then dropped from the same height to
see which would reach the ground first. Students learned that the balloon filled with the carbon dioxide from the dry
ice landed first, due to its higher density. Additional activities focused on the ocean's ability to dissolve carbon dioxide
in cold temperature versus warm temperatures. WMS would like to extend a huge thank you to the American Chemical Society and the volunteers for their time and expertise, as well as to K-12 Math & Science Instructional Support,
Connie Kennedy, for organizing this experience for our kids.

Valentine’s Day with “Mugs of Love”
On Valentine's Day, student council members visited
Bay Medical Care Facility, the YMCA, Wirt Library, and
Pine Towers to deliver "Mugs of Love" (mugs filled with
candy and popcorn) to workers and residents. In total,
students handed out over 175 mugs. This has been a
