Northern Gas Networks (NGN) owns and maintains the vast
underground pipe network that covers most of Yorkshire, the
North East and northern Cumbria.
Providing a safe and reliable supply of gas to our 2.7
million customers 24 hours a day, 365 days a year is our
over-riding priority and we invest heavily in our gas network.
But we also believe in getting actively involved in local
communities and supporting the most vulnerable members
of society.

Wear
The Wear area spans from Gateshead in the
north to Peterlee in the south and covers the
towns and cities of Sunderland, Gateshead,
Durham and South Shields. The area has a
population of approximately 466,754 and serves
around 390,327 homes and businesses.
Wear covers an area of 2,000km2 and includes
our customer contact centre in Sunderland and
depot in Hendon.
£700,000 will be invested in Hebburn’s
gas network
We’re replacing 3.4km of ageing metal gas main
in Lyon Street, Hebburn town centre to prevent
recurring leaks.
Modernising our network
We’ll be saying goodbye to our gas holder in
Ayres Quay in 2016. The giant structure is a
legacy from a different time – it is no longer in
use and is costly to maintain. We’ll be recycling
as many materials as possible and reinstating
the site following the demolition.
We create work for over 500 colleagues in
the Wear area including one small, locally
run engineering firm employing around
40 engineers who deliver our gas mains
replacement programme.
