Using iMotion HD
How to create Time Lapse videos and Stop Motion animations on an iPad!
!
!
Before you start …!
iMotion HD will allow students to create both Time Lapse videos (eg: watching a seed
grow) and Stop Motion animations (eg: clay animation movies). In both cases it is
important that the iPad is held in a fixed position to get the best effect. There are a variety
of devices available to mount an iPad … the images below show four options that would
steady an iPad while shooting a stop frame animation. !
!
Fat Gecko iPad mount connected to a Joby GorillaPod
(although it is compatible with any standard ¼”tripod)!

Belkin Tablet Stage stand (also comes with its own App)!

even something like Grandma’s old plate holder!

1
Create a stop motion animation …!
!
After you have steadied the iPad open the !
iMotion HD App …!
!
!
!
!
!
!
The main iMotion HD
screen loads …!
!
!
!
!
Select new movie …!
!
!
!
!
Stop motion animation is a
very painstaking “manual”
process - you need to set up
the scene, take an image,
move an object a small
distance and take a second
image, move the object again
and take a third image, and
so on …!
!
!
!
!
!
!
!
!
Select manual!
!
!
!
!
!
!

When you are ready select the start button …!

The capture screen appears … !
!
!
!
I am going to make a stop
frame animation of the cap
of the USB memory stick
moving around the red
pen …!
!
select capture to take the
first frame of the movie!
!
!
!
!
!
Move the object a tiny
distance (in this case the
cap of the USB stick) and
select capture a second
time …!
!
!
continue moving the
object and taking captures
until the animation is
complete …!

3
It can take a lot of individual images to make the movie appear smooth … the smaller the
distance moved on each frame - therefore the more frames - the better the movie will look.!
!
When you have taken all the frames select stop!
A message appears asking you to tap again to confirm you want to stop the capture.!
Tap again …!
!
The stop frame animation loads and plays over and over and the tools appear …!
!
!
Press the Pause button to stop the animation playing …!
!

The other tools let you move through the animation frame-by-frame and even delete
frames if they are faulty …!
!
Move back
one frame
Move forward
one frame
Jump to
last frame
Delete the
current
frame
Jump to
first frame
Turn the
tools off/on
Change the
speed of the
animation
!
When you are happy with the stop frame animation select export to save it …!
!
Select photo library to save the video to the camera roll …!
!
The export progress bar appears
!
You may get a message to allow
iMotion HD to access your
photos … select OK

Create a time lapse video …!
Like the stop motion animations, it is important that the iPad is steady while creating a
time lapse video - so first mount it in some way. Time lapse videos could be used to show
a sunset, the movement of traffic, a seed growing, a flower opening, mould spreading on a
piece of bread, a snapshot of class activities for the day, and so on.!
!
Open the iMotion HD App!
!
!
!
!
!
!
!
!
!
!
!
!
Select new movie!
Select time-lapse!
!
!
You can name your
project before you
start …!
!
!
!
unlike stop motion,
time-lapse works
automatically - so you
have to decide on the
interval between
shots (the default is 1
second) …!
Using iMotion HD!
6
After you have selected the appropriate interval select the Start button …!
!
The Waiting for start… screen opens!
!
check the image is the
one you want to make
into the time-lapse
video (this one is about
cloud movement) …!
!
!
When you are ready
select start!
!
!
!
!
!
!
It will start to take the shots automatically (you should hear the camera click each time) … and
the count of the shots appears on the top of the screen …!
!
!
You can pause the taking
of shots !
(eg: if you are watching a
seed grow and want to turn
off the video overnight)!
!
!
When you have all the
necessary shots you can
use the stop button.!
!
You can then use the tools to move through the frames, delete any frames and finally
export the video to the camera roll (the same steps as for the stop motion)
