July 2013 - Oak Hill Country Club

July 2013
Greetings again
from the 2013 PGA
Championship
PGA
planning team!
We are now just over
a month away from Championship week
and couldn’t be more excited for the world of
sports to turn their attention to Oak Hill.
With the Championship fast approaching and
construction beginning, a “Member Survival
Guide” will be mailed to you soon.
In June we experienced two milestone
events leading up to the Championship.

Media Day – June 3, 2013
2012 PGA Champion Rory McIlroy paid a visit
to Rochester and Oak Hill on Monday, June 3.
Rory started the day playing the East Course
where he finished 3 under par. Rory played
with PGA of America President Ted Bishop,
CBS Executive Direct Rob Correa and got a
few tips playing alongside Oak Hill golf professional, Craig Harmon. Over 100 members
of media outlets played on the East Course in
the morning as well. Lunch followed and then
a press conference, mediated by PGA of America’s Julius Mason, drew local and national
media outlets as well as many important dignitaries and PGA Officials. In a very poised
demeanor, Rory answered questions regarding
his current play, his experiences growing up,
his thoughts on the upcoming Championship
in August as well as some interesting personal
questions such as his favorite movie which he
said is Anchor Man (no, he isn’t kidding!).
Throughout the day, Rolling Stone artist
Philip Burke painted Rory on one of the golf
balls for our Golf Balls on Parade community
initiative. As Rory left the press conference, he
stopped to take a photo and sign ‘his’ golf ball.
Rory’s last stop of the day was to the
Rochester Museum and Science Center for
the Grand Opening of the PGA Championship
History Exhibit. Rory and PGA of America
President Ted Bishop unveiled Rory’s piece of
history, the most recent addition to the exhibit.
Rory got to see his shadow box, which included
the shirt and belt he wore on Championship

A DAY WITH RORY What a wonderful experience I had with this
young man. He couldn’t have been
more of a gentleman, with great
respect for Oak Hill and the type
of course it is. He shot an easy
67. Drove the ball over 300 yards
all the time and showed how easy
Oak Hill could play in the PGA
if you are driving the ball well.
He hit 9 iron or wedge into half
the holes! It will be fun to follow
him next month during the PGA
Championship.
HOLE IN ONE UPDATE We
have had a little action since the
June update. Rob Turner on #6
East, Steve Sercu on #4 West,
Chris Junker on #17 West were the
latest. Congrats to all!
HOT ROUNDS Many, many hot
rounds so far this season. Trevor
Sluman 65, Matt Weins 68 on the
East course were the highlighted
ones. Best of the West, gross, Tom
Blank 66, Matt Weins, Darren
Ressler, Carter Lucas, John
Schantz, Jr. 69. Low net, Dr. Balaji
64, Ed Larkin and John Kraus 65
twice. East Course low nets, Chuck
Ryan 67. Not a lot of low nets on
the East. I wonder why?????
ENJOY BOTH COURSES
WHILE YOU CAN, ESPECIALLY THE EAST This is the month
to play the East under tournament
conditions with the rough being so
high. You will get a feel and appreciate how difficult Oak Hill is with
high rough and how great the players are who can easily hit out of
this rough.

Happy July 4th!
We are counting down to the start
of the 95th PGA Championship
which will be here in 36 days! The
Club could not look any better as
we prepare for the eyes of the
GOLFING WORLD to thrust upon
Oak Hill Country Club. The PGA
team has shared a great stat - there
will be approximately 500 million
viewers watching our Club during
Championship week. What a great
honor it is to be the host site of a
major golf event. Please have fun
and enjoy the week as we make golf
history!
Member communication will
be a priority during July with the
goal of keeping you informed of day
to day operations. Our website and
mobile application will be the main
tool used for member communication. You will be sent emails alerting you of things to know as we
move forward with the staging of
the Championship. Look forward to
receiving the PGA Member Survival Guide coming in July.
Parking will be the most important item for us to communicate
to ensure your safety and convenience. Parking locations will be
determined as traffic, staging and
demand change daily. There will
be security at the main gate, whose
goal is to assist and give you direction to the proper member parking location. Shuttle service will be
provided to aid in your safety and
security.
The Reception team at the front
desk, led by Lisa Kennelley and
Jessica Lenz will be the main point
of contact should you have questions
regarding club needs during July
prior to the Championship. During
Championship week we will be providing Concierge services to assist
our members. We will do our best to
make your Championship as enjoyable as possible.
Lastly, it has been a truly
remarkable journey being involved
in planning this PGA Championship. Many hands have made this
event possible. Thank you to all for
your tremendous effort which will
further develop our Club’s tradition
in golf history.
Enjoy the Championship,
Dan

Rory’s father, Gerry McIlroy and his caddie, JP Fitzgerald happily accompanied him
the whole day. There was a great atmosphere
and the PGA of America and their working
partners made sure those in attendance knew
how excited they are to welcome fans around

Habitat Build Ground Breaking –
June 4, 2013
If Media Day wasn’t exciting enough, the
very next day we broke ground for the PGA
of America Spouses and the PGA Tour Wives
Association Habitat Build in Rochester. The
PGA of America Spouses and the PGA Tour
Wives Association came together earlier in the
year to organize this philanthropic endeavor.
Flower City Habitat for Humanity and these
two organizations have joined to build a house
in Rochester’s JOSANA neighborhood.
PGA of America President Ted Bishop and
his wife Cindy helped to break ground along
with Club President Ron Pluta and his wife
Mary along with me and my wife, Kim.
The family chosen was beyond thrilled for
their future home. The family will dedicate
450 hours of labor, half towards their own
home and the other half to another Habitat for
Humanity project. Most of the work done on
the home will take place around the Championship with the dedication coming
on Wednesday, August 7.

Golf Lottery
As many clubs are having golf outings during the week
of the PGA, tee times are severely limited. Many clubs
have generously offered reciprocal tee times to our members. Due to the limitations, we have decided to have a
lottery to distribute the limited tee times that are available to us. This will be a blind draw for tee times on
Monday, July 22, 2013. We will have nine boxes in the Pro Shop lobby
corresponding to the 16 days we have been given

reciprocals. They will be near the
handicap scoring terminal - one for
each day we have been granted
reciprocals. There will be Golf
Reciprocal Requests Sheets available starting Monday, July 1, 2013,
that you will fill out your foursomes names, circle your preference as to AM or PM and drop
in the day you would like to play. Please only put one slip per foursome for the day you desire to play.
• All requests must be dropped
into the boxes by the end of the day
on Sunday, July 21, 2013.
• On Monday, July 22, we will
have the lottery at 10 a.m. and
begin drawing the spots and
assigning them to the clubs who
have offered us reciprocals in
alphabetical order, i.e.: Brook Lea
Country Club, then Cobblestone,
then Country Club of Rochester,
etc.
• Please check the lottery by
Wednesday, July 24 at 10 a.m. If
you do not want the time or the
course that has been chosen, let
the Golf Shop know and we will let
the Club know you are not coming.
• If you fail to show up for a tee
time that was not cancelled by
Wednesday, July 24, you will be
billed $125.00 per player and we
will dispense that back to the Club
you were assigned to play.
• Final lottery assignments will be
posted on the Club website.

IMPORTANT: SEVERE WEATHER WARNING!
Oak Hill’s severe weather warning detection system is set at a 10 mile
radius. This is the recommended distance established by the National
Lightning Safety Institute and several meteorologists in the Rochester
area. You should also be aware of a phenomenon called “blue sky lightning”. It’s well documented and essentially advises that even though the
weather in the immediate area may appear clear, lightning 10 or more
miles away can strike the area. So don’t let the visible appearance of
favorable weather fool you.
Finally, even though a thunderstorm may appear to have passed, it’s
not uncommon for trailing lightning strikes to hit the area. So it’s important to wait for the all clear horn to sound before resuming play. The all
clear horn will sound 10 minutes after the last lightning strike has
cleared the 10 mile radius. Adherence to the severe weather warnings is
critical to the safety of you, your guests and the children that are present
on Oak Hill’s property at any point in time. We must insist on your cooperation. Thank you.

Attention All Golfers!
Why is it so important that you post your scores?
In order for the handicap system to provide fair play among players with
potentially wide varying handicaps, it is important that EVERYONE follow the same rules outlined by the USGA, RDGA and local courses. This
includes posting all scores whether casual, sweeps or tournament golfing.
In order to comply with these requirements, the Handicap Co-Chairs
will perform “random Reviews” for those who maintain handicaps. These
reviews are NOT biased towards any individual golfer but are, in fact,
used for ensuring that golfers follow the same guidelines for posting
scores. Random reviews point out errors in how and when scores are
posted. If an error has been identified with your posting, you will be
notified.
Just as golfers make mistakes posting scores, the reviewers too can
make mistakes reviewing scores. If you believe that there was an error
made, please inform one of the Co-Chairs. Please remember that the goal
is to provide for fair play among players and the best way to accomplish
this is with an accurate record of the individual scores.
If you have any questions about this ruling or, about how and when
to post scores, please do not hesitate to contact either one of us.
We will be publishing each month in the Quercus reminders and tips
on posting. Thank you in advance for your cooperation.
Sincerely, Carol Mossien and Janet Derleth,
WAOH Handicap Co-Chairs
