CELEBRATING 26 YEARS
26 Years and Counting! After celebrating
the Cincinnati International Wine Festival’s
Charity Auction and Luncheon’s 25th
anniversary last year, we are excited at the
prospect of continuing this outstanding
legacy for the next 25 years. 2016 promises
to be another great year when we can bring
together the finest wines in the world in
order to give back to the Greater Cincinnati
region through a wide variety of not-forprofit organizations.
The Charity Auction and Luncheon is
one of four annual Festival events that have
helped us share an accumulated $4.6 million
with the community. In 2015, the Wine
Auction, Grand Tastings, Winery Dinners and
Russ Wiles Memorial Golf Tournament raised
$339,000 for some 35 charities.
So THANK YOU – and consider yourself
a champion of great causes when you raise
your paddles high and often today!
Members of the Charity Auction &
Luncheon committee, many of them
longstanding Festival volunteers, are
responsible for gathering all the donated
wines and items for the silent and live
auctions, as well as putting together this
catalog. Additional volunteers jump in to
help set up and keep us organized at checkin and check-out. THANK YOU!
THANK YOU to our Honorary Chair
Rick Sayre, Vice President and Director of
Winemaking at Rodney Strong Vineyards, a
well known leader in the industry who is with
us today and throughout the Wine Festival.
THANK YOU to our Table Hosts from wineries
participating in the 2016 Festival. They have
some incredible wines just for you today
and they are delighted to share their wine
knowledge!

HONORARY CHAIR RICK SAYRE
Vice President/Director of Winemaking – Rodney Strong Vineyards
We are pleased to introduce you Rick Sayre,
honorary Chairperson for the 2016 Cincinnati
International Wine Festival. He has been at the helm
of Rodney Strong Vineyards for more than three
decades and we are thrilled to have him in Cincinnati
this week throughout the Festival events!
Sayre began his winemaking career in 1970
at the age of 19 as assistant winemaker and cellar
master at Simi Winery in Sonoma County. He had
the opportunity to train under the world-renowned
winemaster André Tchelistcheff, who instilled in
his young trainee a deep passion for the art of
winemaking and the desire to not only master
his craft, but continually push the boundaries of
creativity.
Sayre joined Rodney Strong Vineyards in 1979
and has guided the wine collection to include
world-class Reserve, Symmetry and Single-Vineyard
releases, an outstanding line of Estate wines and
9
best-in-class Sonoma County wines that continue to
please vintage after vintage.
His voracious appetite for knowledge in
winemaking has taken him to France, Spain, Australia
and New Zealand. He became the first winemaker
in California to install an in-house cooperage
specializing in toasting of American oak barrels. In
recent years, Sayre has worked closely with World
Cooperage in an effort to perfect the American oak
barrel for winemaking.
As a practitioner of handcrafted wines, Sayre
is involved in all aspects of winemaking at Rodney
Strong, from vineyard management through final
blending.
He and his wife Peggy live in Windsor, where
they are avid gardeners and are often spotted at
the local farmer’s market selling their fruits and
vegetables.

6 – 750ml Janzen Beckstoffer To Kalon Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon 2012
$750 - $1,000
Several ski seasons at an upscale establishment
in Switzerland can be blamed for introducing
Claus and Diane Janzen to fine wines. Later,
after transplanting his family from Winnipeg,
Canada to Napa, Claus spent 12 years at Caymus
developing the most enviable international
marketing operation in the Valley. Meanwhile,
Claus’ own viniculture ambitions were ripening.
A chance acquisition of some practically
discarded Sangiovese grapes in 1993 led to the
first vintage of Bacio Divino and the realization of
the Bacio Divino family estate. In 1999, a second
wine, Pazzo, was created, a Sangiovese-centric
blend with undercurrents of Merlot, Syrah and a
touch of their estate Cab. Ever curious, they later

ventured towards single varietals resulting in
their namesake Janzen (2004), Vagabond (2004),
and Lucie (2009). Janzen has 3 distinct vineyard

one offered here, the famous Beckstoffer To Kalon
Vineyard which is renowned as one of the finest
valley floor vineyard sites in Napa Valley. Robert

followed by notes of creosote, burning embers,
wood spice, forest floor, blackberry and cassis. It

concentrated finish.”

1 each - 750ml Château Monbousquet St. Émilion
1995, 1996, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2003, 2005, 2009
$800 - $1,300
An eight bottle vertical of a well cellared, highly
rated Bordeaux. Château Monbousquet, in
the right bank appellation of Saint-Émilion in
Bordeaux, was elevated to Grand Cru Classé in
the Classification of 2006. The estate and château
originates from the late 16th century, and in the
early 18th century the property was purchased
by the de Carle family, owners of Château Figeac,
with winemaking beginning in the 19th century
when Comte de Vassal-Montviel expanded the
estate to 99 acres and had vines planted on a
large scale. A neglected property by 1945, it was
bought by Daniel Querre who began complete
restorations of the vineyards and buildings
and continued by his son, Alain Querre. In the
following years Monbousquet became one of
the best-known non-classified wines of SaintÉmilion. In 1993 Monbousquet was acquired by
the Parisian supermarket owner Gérard Perse,
who later bought Château Pavie, Château PavieDecesse and Château La Clusière. Consultancy
is provided by well-known consultant Michel
Rolland. The Wine Advocate rates this
collection as follows: 1995 – 92, 1996 – 90, 1998
– 94, 1999 – 94, 2000 – 93, 2003 – 93, 2005 – 95,

1 – 750ml Château Pape Clement Pessac-Leognan 2005
1 – 750ml Château Pontet-Canet Pauillac 2009
$600 - $750
These youthful Bordeauxs will provide enjoyment
for years to come. The 2003 Léoville Barton is a
spectacular success. It exhibits a striking bouquet
as well as a full-bodied, exuberant style, a lot
of complexity, and striking depth and richness.
This is a profound, stunning effort. It should
continue to provide immense pleasure for 20-30
years. The 2005 Pape Clement is probably the
greatest release they’ve ever made. The blend
of 55% Merlot and 45% Cabernet Sauvignon
exhibits sumptuous notes of graphite, melted
licorice, and blackberries, reveals a full body and
extraordinary concentration. It should last for 3035 years. Pontet-Canet proprietor Alfred Tesseron
27
has produced a possibly perfect 2009. His
vineyard, which sits on the high plateau of Pauillac
adjacent to Mouton Rothschild, has produced a
wine of extraordinary intensity and purity. It is
concentrated, with silky tannin and copious notes
of graphite, cassis, licorice, and subtle smoke and
forest floor. Full-bodied and textured with striking
purity and definition, it is a wine of colossal weight
as well as elegance. This brilliant Pauillac should
evolve for 50-75 years. The Wine Advocate rates
this collection as follows: 2003 – 96, 2005 – 98,
and 2009 – 97 to 100.

2 each – 750ml Château Angelus St. Émilion 1993, 1994
$750 - $850
These four bottles from the Premier Grand Cru
Classe vineyards at Château Angelus, with its
magnificent terroir, are sure to please. Since
1985, when Hubert de Bouard de Laforest, with
a little help from Michel Rolland, took over
the family business, the entire operation was
modernized and upgraded. Hubert, who studied
with Emile Peynaud at Bordeaux, has continued
to improve quality year after year. Its 23.4 hectare
vineyard, just west of St. Émilion, is planted
to 50% Merlot, 47% Cabernet Franc and 3%
Cabernet Sauvignon. The south facing slopes
help the grapes attain full ripeness, contributing
to the intensity of the wine, which is as
extroverted as Bordeaux gets. These wines have
a saturated dark ruby color, considerable power
and richness and huge but ripe tannins, which
characterize the Grand Vin. Robert Parker rates
the 1993 - 92 points and the 1994 - 93 points.

Enjoy a rare opportunity to see how the “masters”
do it: Pair sumptuous food with precisely the best
wine to go with each course. While Executive
Chef Nathan Sheatzley of the Cincinnatian Hotel’s

at the Maisonette under Chef Bertand Bouquin
and went on to work at acclaimed restaurants
such as Café Boulud in Palm Beach, the Penrose
Room at the Broadmoor and the Oakroom at
Louisville’s Seelbach Hotel. Matthew is one of

and travels the country educating wait staffs and
consumers alike about wine, beer and spirits.

6 – 750ml Cade Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve 2012
$1,200 – $1,500
From the owners of PlumpJack Winery and
Odette Estate, Cade Estate was founded on
Howell Mountain as a complement to the
valley floor terroir of PlumpJack. They began
strongly, and continue to exhibit promise. Their
organically farmed vineyard estate sits high
above the fog line at an elevation of 1800 feet. Of
54 contiguous acres surrounding the winery, 19
are currently planted to Cabernet Sauvignon and
two to Merlot. The 2012 Reserve, with 7% Merlot,
is gorgeous. An unusually open, resonant, young
Howell Mountain Cabernet, the Estate Reserve
dazzles with its rich, textured fruit and incredibly
welcoming personality. Hints of smoke, tar,
licorice and menthol add complexity to the
intense fruit. This is a wine you will want to drink,
not merely taste. All the elements come together
in an effortless, inviting wine loaded with class.
Robert Parker has rated this at 98 points.

3 – 750ml Abreu Madrona Ranch Proprietary Red 2011
$2,000 - $2,500
The work that the famous viticulturist and
wine producer David Abreu does, along with
his assistant Brad Grimes, is at the top of the
qualitative hierarchy in California, if not the
entire world. His four vineyards produce
ravishing wines of great richness, complexity and
aging potential. Even in vintages where others
might stumble, such as 2011, somehow Abreu’s
magic in the vineyard translates into wines of
fabulous intensity and compelling quality in the
bottle. None of this comes cheap, nor are these
wines easy to access as virtually everything is
sold via a mailing list and to a handful of the
nation’s finest restaurants. Abreu’s total acreage
is around 70 acres, with Abreu selling some
31
of the fruit to other high-quality wineries (i.e.,
Colgin). The result is that only 250-300 cases of
each of the four separate vineyard-designated
wines are produced in each vintage. Their blends
tend to be Cabernet Sauvignon with increasing
percentages of Cabernet Franc included. Robert
Parker gives the 2011 Madrona Ranch 95
points and says the following: “After spending
26 months in 100% new oak, it exhibits great fruit,
concentration and intensity. It displays lots of
Christmas fruitcake, coffee, chocolate and spice
box notes, a full-bodied mouthfeel, and sweet
tannin. Drink it over the next 15+ years.”

3 – 750ml Aubert UV Vineyard Pinot Noir 2013
3 – 750ml Aubert UV-SL Vineyard Pinot Noir 2013
$1,500 - $2,500
Cult producer Mark Aubert is one of the
contenders for California’s finest practitioner
of Burgundian-styled, yet classic, California
Chardonnays and Pinot Noirs which can only be
matched by a handful of other producers in the
world. We are offering in this lot two of Aubert’s
seven single vineyard Chardonnays, the Ritchie
Vineyard and the UV Vineyard, as well as two of
his four single vineyard Pinot Noirs, the UV and
UV-SL Vineyards. Robert Parker, who rates the
2012 Ritchie 95 points, says the following: “It
reveals a more evolved nose of smoky hazelnuts,
honeysuckle, and tropical fruits, less minerality,
and full-bodied unctuosity buttressed by crisp
acids. It should drink well for 6-8 years.” He
rates the 2013 UV-SL Chardonnay 97+ and
says: “Loads of nectarine, tangerine oil, mango
and caramelized citrus and has a super-core of
fruit. It also offers great structure and a liquid
stone minerality. It should drink well for 10-12+
years.” He gives the 2013 UV Pinot 96 points
and says: “The rich, prodigious, full-bodied 2013
is a denser, richer wine offering abundant notes
of blueberries, blackberries, forest floor and
strong hints of Asian hoisin sauce and dark fruits.
Like all the 2013 Pinot Noirs, it has a decade or
more of aging potential.” Finally, the 2013 UV-SL
Pinot is rated 94+ with comments as follows:
“The 2013 Pinot Noir UV-SL boasts a dense ruby/
purple color as well as a big, sweet nose of
blackcurrants, black cherries, forest floor and
beet root. The complex aromatics are followed
by a full-bodied, intensely concentrated, pure,
seamlessly constructed red that should drink
well for 10-15+ years.”

of J. Rochioli. The Joe Rochioli family emigrated
from Italy in 1911 and later settled at their 125
acre current location in 1934 which they farmed
for many years until grape production started
in the 1950’s. Initially growing fruit for jug
wine production, in the late 60’s they planted
French clones of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay
and soon were selling their grapes to Davis
Bynum and Williams Selyem among others. In
1987 they released their first estate Pinot Noir
and that same year was named “Best Pinot Noir
in America” by Wine Spectator. A few years
later they were one of the first to separate
their vineyard into separate blocks, each with
unique terroir characteristics. Now in their

1 – 750ml Tenuta dell’Ornellaia Ornellaia 2004
1 – 750ml Tenuta San Guido Bolgheri Sassicaia 2009
$600 - $800
Three bottles of extraordinary iconic Super
Tuscan wine. Back in the 1970’s there was an
enormous need to augment the rules governing
Italian wine in order to achieve better quality and
become more competitive in foreign markets,
specifically the United States. Super Tuscans
proved to be the instrument with which both
goals could be achieved. They can be 100%
Sangiovese but in many cases are a blend of
Bordeaux varietals: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot,
Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. The intent
was to separate these wines from basic table
wines and today most people see these wines
as the best expression of Tuscany with super
high prices. These three wines are certainly
no exception. The 2004 Solaia, with a blend of
75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Sangiovese and
5% Cabernet Franc, is the first vintage in which
the component wines were aged separately,
rather than together, as had been the custom in
previous vintages. The Wine Advocate says it is
breathtaking and rates it 96. The Ornellaia,
60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, 12%
Cabernet Franc and 3% Petit Verdot, has
impeccable inner fragrance, sweetness and
balance and Wine Advocate rates it 95. Finally
the Sassicaia, consisting of Cabernet Sauvignon
and Cabernet Franc, shows substantial richness
and opulence with well-managed tannins and
Wine Advocate also scores it 95.

6 – 750ml Vietti Barolo Rocche 2009
$900 - $1,100
The history of the Vietti winery traces its roots
back to the 19th Century. Only at the beginning
of the 20th century, however, did the Vietti
name become a winery offering its own wines
in bottle. Vietti wines come from Castiglione
Falletto vineyards in the heart of the Barolo
zone. The grapes for this wine are selected
from the 47-year-old vineyards in Rocche of
Castiglione, cultivated with 4.6 plants per
hectare. After the harvest and gentle pressing,
alcoholic fermentation takes place over four
37
weeks in stainless steel tanks. This wine is always
pleasant and long-lived and is one of Vietti’s most
traditional products. The Wine Advocate rates
the 2009 Barolo Rocche 96 points and says the
following: “The 2009 Barolo Rocche is a solid,
unwavering expression that brings the intensity
meter even higher. Sweet red fruit, licorice,
leather and moist pipe tobacco are some of the
many layers that peel back from the bouquet. The
balance, structure and persistence of the wine
are all superb. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2036.”

6 – 750ml Gaja Pieve Santa Restituta Brunello di Montalcino Rennina 2010
$1,000 - $1,500
Gaja is an important Italian wine producer
from the Piedmont region, initially producing
a number of Barbaresco and Barolo wines,
and later diversifying into Brunello and
“Super-Tuscan” production. Its current owner
and president Angelo Gaja is credited with
developing techniques that have revolutionized
winemaking in Italy, and terms such as “the
undisputed king of Barbaresco”, and “the
man who dragged Piedmont into the modern
world” have been applied to him. In 1994 Gaja
purchased property in Montalcino Tuscany
with the Pieve Santa Restituta estate and began
production in 1996 of the line of Brunellos offered
in this lot. Pieve Santa Restituta sometimes gets
lost in the Gaja lineup, but the estate’s best
Brunelli are easily among the finest in the entire
appellation. The Wine Advocate rates the 2010
Rennina 97 points and says: “What distinguishes
the wine is the delicate mineral signature that
appears through the thick texture of the fruit. It’s
like background music that gives cozy ambiance
to an elaborately furnished ballroom. I consider
the 2010 Rennina a masterpiece and, again, I just
don’t know how Angelo Gaja does it. He is the
winemaker with the Midas touch. Truth be told,
the wine does lack territory-driven typicity. But
it’s just so darn good, it hardly matters. It will
continue its evolution for 10-20 years.”

1 – 3ltr Louis Roederer Cristal Champagne 1999
$2,500 - $3,000
Considered one of the last great independent and
family owned Champagne houses, Louis Roederer,
established in 1833, is now managed by Frédéric
Rouzaud who represents the seventh generation
of the lineage. The House of Louis Roederer has
annual exports of three million bottles worldwide
and its most famous wine, Cristal, was created
in 1876 to satisfy the demanding tastes of Tsar
Alexander II. The emperor asked Louis Roederer
to reserve the House’s best cuvée for him every
year. To distinguish this cuvée, this exceptional
champagne came in a flat-bottomed, transparent
lead-crystal bottle. The new brand was named
after this precious material, which is particularly
transparent and luminous. Produced uniquely
during the best years, when the Chardonnay
(around 40%) and Pinot Noir (around 60%)
grapes have attained perfect maturity, Cristal is
39
aged for 6 years and left for a further 8 months
after disgorgement. Cristal is a remarkably
balanced and refined champagne whose length
is inimitable. It has a silky texture and fruity
aromas, complemented by a powerful mineral
quality with white fruit and citrus notes. Cristal
is a wine that keeps well: it can be conserved for
over twenty years without losing its freshness
and character; and the jeroboam offered here
can be held for even longer. Robert Parker rates
this champagne 98 and says: “One of the finest
Champagnes I have ever brought to my lips,
the 1999 Cristal bursts from the glass with fresh
hazelnut and apple scents. Elegant, deep, and
silky-textured, this medium to full-bodied beauty
is immensely concentrated, pure, packed with
apple flavors, and astoundingly long in the finish.”

$1,500 - $1,800
A 12 bottle vertical of fine Châteauneuf du Pape
cellared by the donors since purchase. The
winery takes its name from the Beaucastel family
which lived in Courthézon in the middle of the
16th century. Records show Pierre de Beaucastel
buying a barn and some associated land at
Coudoulet in 1549 but the first mention of vines on
the property was in 1840. In the late 19th century,
when the phylloxera epidemic struck the region,
the owner of the Domaine was Élie Dussaud, who
decided not to replant the vineyards but rather to
sell the property. In 1909, it was bought by Pierre
Tramier, and the vineyards were rebuilt under his
ownership. After him, his son-in-law Pierre Perrin,
took over and expanded Château de Beaucastel’s
vineyard holdings considerably. The property
has stayed in the Perrin family since. After Pierre
41
Perrin, Beaucastel was managed by Jacques
Perrin until 1978, and after that Jacques’ sons
Jean-Pierre Perrin and François Perrin. In 1990
Jean-Pierre and François Perrin in collaboration
with wine importer Robert Haas founded Tablas
Creek Vineyard within the California viticultural
area of Paso Robles. In 2006, the Perrin family and
Château de Beaucastel joined Primum Familiae

3 – 750ml Dana Estates Lotus Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon 2012
$1,800 - $2,200
This estate, thoroughly modernized and brought
to world-class quality by Korean proprietor Hi
Sang Lee and his son, has considerable history,
having been a winery and vineyard first planted
in 1883 by H.W. Helms. Mr. Lee has been an avid
wine collector and enthusiast for many years and
in South Korea founded a fine wine distribution
company (Nara Food Company). He has long
held an appreciation of Napa Valley, especially
for Cabernet Sauvignon and his passion for Napa
wine has strongly influenced the luxury and cult
wine market in Korea. In 2005 Mr. Lee purchased
the old Livingston-Moffet Winery from John
and Diane Livingston with the intent to produce
premium wines reflective of their location.
All of their four wines are relatively small-lot
Cabernet Sauvignons, generally ranging from
200 to as many as 800 cases. The wines have
been spectacular and represent four completely
different terroirs. Their vineyards include Crystal
Springs Vineyard on Howell Mountain, the Helms
Vineyard in Rutherford, the Hershey Vineyard
on Howell Mountain, and the Lotus Vineyard.
Consulting for them is wine guru Philippe Melka.
Robert Parker awards this wine 98 points and
says: “The 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Lotus, which
is 93% Cabernet Sauvignon and 7% Petit Verdot
and was aged 25 months in French oak (more
than 90% new). There are only 300 cases of this
wine, which has a striking floral nose with hints
of licorice, burning embers, incense, blueberry
and blackberry liqueur. It’s powerful, lightly
tannic, extravagantly rich and a great classic from
a fabulous terroir and impeccable winemaking
and élevage. Drink it over the next 20+ years.”

6 – 750ml Joseph Phelps Insignia Proprietary Red 2012
$1,000 - $1,500
In the late 1960’s, Joseph Phelps was running one
of the largest construction companies in the U.S.
when he won the bid to build Souverain Winery
(now Rutherford Hill) located a few miles outside
of St. Helena. Enamored with the beautiful Napa
Valley and contemplating a career change, in
1973 Joe bought a cattle ranch in Spring Valley
and began planting vineyards and construction
of a winery which was completed in 1974 in time
for harvest, crushing grapes for the first Insignia
and the first Syrah bottlings. It put Joe Phelps
and his Joseph Phelps Vineyards on the map of
top Napa Valley wine producers. Four decades
later, the flagship wine, Insignia, is recognized
as one of the world’s great wines. Thirty-one of
37 vintages have been rated 90 or more points
47
by various wine publications, including three
perfect 100 point scores for the 1991, 1997 and
2002 vintages from Robert Parker’s The Wine
Advocate. The 2002 vintage of Insignia also was
awarded “Wine of the Year” by Wine Spectator
magazine in 2005. Robert Parker rates the
2012 Insignia 96 points and says the following:
“Inky purple to the rim, with notes of lead
pencil shavings, incense, camphor, blackberry
and creme de cassis, the wine is full-bodied,
offering a multi-layered, textural, skyscraperlike mouthfeel, terrific purity, density and
richness. All of this is achieved without a sense
of heaviness or anything aggressive. This is a
beauty to drink now and over the next 30 years.”

A very nice offering of seven Peter Michael
wines: three Chardonnays, three Pinot Noirs
and their top Cabernet blend. Peter Michael
Winery was established in 1982 in Knights
Valley in Sonoma County at the foot of Mount St.
Helena by Sir Peter Michael who founded high
tech company Quantel. Over the years some of
the most illustrious names in the industry have
served as Peter Michael’s winemaker including:
Helen Turley, Mark Aubert, Vanessa Wong,
Luc Morlet, and current winemaker Nicolas
Morlet. They produce 15 different bottlings of
Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and

1 – 6ltr Shafer Hillside Select Cabernet Sauvignon 1993
$2,000 - $3,000
An Imperial (equivalent of eight - 750ml
bottles) of one of Napa Valley’s finest cult wines
signed by the legendary owner, John Shafer.
Shafer Vineyards traces its beginnings to 1972
when John Shafer left a 23-year career in the
publishing industry and, with his family, moved
to the Napa Valley to pursue a second career
in wine, purchasing a 210-acre estate in Napa
Valley’s Stags Leap District. Evolving from
grape growers to vintners, the Shafers crushed
their first Cabernet grapes in 1978 and began
construction on their winery a year later. From
a modest beginning of 1,000 cases, the winery
has grown steadily until reaching its present size
of 32,000 cases of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot,
49
Chardonnay, and Syrah. Their signature wine,
Hillside Select, is sourced from the slopes of an
amphitheater-like structure of rock, where thanks
to a series of knolls and outcroppings some
vineyard blocks receive southeastern sunlight,
while others receive southern or western
exposure. Each afternoon a cool breeze from
San Francisco Bay channels into the box canyon.
Both Wine Advocate and Wine Spectator rate
this wine 90 and Spectator says: “A subtle, wellbalanced style that weaves together complex
tobacco, cigar box, currant and spice flavors.
Turns beefy, with leather, mineral and sage notes
and firm tannins.”

6 – 750ml Graham’s Vintage Port 1994
$650 – $750
Quite simply a classic! For almost 200 years
W & J Graham’s has been an independent
family business renowned for producing the
finest Port wines. Their vineyards are situated
on a commanding ridge in Vila Nova de
Gaia across the Douro River from Porto with
spectacular views of Porto’s historic city center.
The 1970 vintage, Graham’s first harvest under
the ownership of the Symington family, was
thought by many to be one of the greatest of
that century. Today, five Symington cousins
share responsibility for every aspect of the
company and personally make the Graham’s
wines. 1994 was a classic growing season that
produced grapes in quite superb conditions. It
soon became apparent during the harvest that
the wines would be exceptional. This 1994 Port,
with huge aging potential, is deep garnet with an
amazing nose; it emits lovely aromas of chocolate,
berry and plum. It is complex and rich, with huge
depth and richness, yet no heaviness and has
grippy but fully rounded tannins. The palate is
full-bodied, creamy in texture on the entry, very
spicy with a thwack of lemongrass and ginger
on the back palate and superb length. This is a
showy, flamboyant port that has the advantage of
being slightly sweeter than other 1994s.
Robert Parker has rated this wine at 96 points.

$1,800 - $2,250
A 12-bottle vertical of well-cellared highly
rated Cabernet Sauvignon from a premier
estate in Napa Valley. Dalla Valle Vineyards
overlook the Napa Valley floor from a hillside
terrace 400 feet above the Silverado Trail in
Oakville. Since Gustav and Naoko Dalla Valle
purchased the property in 1982 and began
planting vines, this exceptional acreage has
continually distinguished itself as the ideal site
for producing some of the world’s finest wines,
thanks to the perfect convergence of lingering
sunlight, cooling marine influence and red
volcanic soil. The first vintage, produced in 1986,
established this wine as an instant Napa Valley
53
classic. Select Cabernet Sauvignon is blended
with a small percentage of Cabernet Franc and
aged in no greater than 60% new French oak.
For close to three decades, this standard-bearer
has consistently shown impressive structure and
velvety berry flavors. This collection is rated by
the Wine Advocate as follows: 1991 – 94, 1992 –
95, 1992 – 95, 1993 – 93, 1994 – 94, 1995 – 92-94,

6 – 750ml Antinori Solaia 2012
$1,500 - $2,000
Solaia, a 50-acre vineyard of the Tignanello estate
with a southwestern exposure, is situated at 11751325 feet above sea level on a soil of calcareous
rock (known as “alberese” in Tuscany). The
Marchesi Antinori firm produced this wine for
the first time in 1978 with an initial blend of 80%
Cabernet Sauvignon and 20% Cabernet Franc,
a blend repeated again in 1979. In the following
vintages 20% of Sangiovese was added to the
Cabernet grapes and the ratio of Cabernet Franc
57
to Cabernet Sauvignon was changed in order to
create a wine which has now become definitive
in its various composing elements. Solaia is
only produced in superior vintages. The Wine
Advocate says the following about the 2012
which it rates 95 points: “The nose is redolent
of dark berry, crushed mineral, plum, spice and
touch of white pepper. The wine is integrated
and seamless, but it speaks with a strong and
articulate voice.”

6 – 750ml Tenuta dell’Ornellaia Bolgheri Ornellaia 2012
$1,400 - $2,000
Tenuta dell’Ornellaia is without question one
of Italy’s blue-chip properties. The gorgeous,
sprawling estate is located in Bolgheri in
Tuscany’s Maremma. Tenuta dell’Ornellaia was
founded in 1981 and from the outset the mission
was to produce outstanding wines. Since then
passion and dedication, coupled with a unique
terroir and an extraordinary microclimate,
have brought the Tenuta dell’Ornellaia’s
prestigious labels great success and recognition
as one of the most important wineries in the
world. Ornellaia is a Bordeaux-inspired blend
consisting principally of Cabernet Sauvignon,
Cabernet Franc and Merlot. The use of several
varietals gives the winemaking team the luxury
of being able to tailor the exact proportion of
the blend to the specific strengths of a given
vintage. Because the blend tends to vary from
year to year in a vertical tasting Ornellaia shows
many different facets of its personality. The
2012 Ornellaia is 56% Cabernet Sauvignon,
27% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc and 7% Petit
Verdot. The Wine Advocate rates this wine 94
and says: “The wine’s density and extraction are
spot-on and the bouquet is beautifully shaped
by dark cherry nuances with spice, leather and
tobacco at the back. There is a gorgeous sense
of richness and plushness here. Some 160,000
bottles were produced. This edition of Ornellaia
is more immediate in character and less suited to
the decades-long aging that cooler vintages can
affront so successfully.”

1 – 9ltr Laurent Perrier Brut Champagne N.V. Salmanazar in a Wooden Box
$1,000 – $1,200
A “party-in-a-bottle”! The House of LaurentPerrier was founded in 1812 and took the name
Laurent-Perrier when Mathilde Perrier, the widow
of Eugène Laurent, combined the two family
names. In 1945, Bernard de Nonancourt began
his apprenticeship before being appointed in
1948 as Chairman and Chief Executive. The
Estate, now overseen by his two daughters, is
anchored in Tours-sur-Marne at the crossroads
of the three main wine growing areas of the
Marne department. Their wines are marked by
a high percentage of Chardonnay showcasing
59
their signature house style, offering freshness,
lightness and elegance. The NV Brut is an
attractive wine, pale gold with fine and persistent
bubbles, laced with ripe pears, apricots, dried
flowers and spices; refined, with a sweet, smoky
undercurrent with flavors of glazed pear, candied
lemon zest and golden raisin, with a hint of
marzipan. It ends with a spicy note lingering
on the finish. This 9ltr Salmanazar is equivalent
to 12 bottles of wine. Wine Spectator rates this
Champagne 91.

1982, 1986, 1989, 1995, 1996, 2000
$2,000 – $3,000
A six bottle vertical from the best vintages of
Château Pichon Lalande over the past 25 years.
Château Pichon Comtesse was once part of
the larger Pichon estate in Bordeaux, owned
by Pierre de Rauzan, along with what today is
Château Pichon Longueville Baron. In 1850, the
estate was divided into the two current Pichon
estates. In 1925, Château Pichon Longueville
Comtesse de Lalande was bought by Edouard
Miailhe and Louis Miailhe. The daughter of
Edouard Miailhe, May Eliane de Lencquesaing,
later became the owner and manager of the
property and in 2006, de Lencquesaing sold a
majority interest in the Château to the Rouzaud
family, which also owns the Champagne house
Louis Roederer. Château Pichon Lalande was
classified as a second growth in the Classification
of 1855. Pichon Lalande has an unusually high
proportion of Merlot for a Pauillac property,
which tends to make the tannic structure of their
wine slightly softer than wines from many other
classified Pauillac châteaux, which particularly
in France is described as a more “feminine”
style. Robert Parker has rated this exceptional
collection as follows: 1982 – 100, 1986 – 94,
1989 – 93, 1995 – 96, 1996 – 96, 2000 – 96.
