NEWSLETTER Date: 26 October 2016 No 1/10 Friendliness Good Manners Courage Compassion Tolerance Persistence & Resilience Saving Superman Superman has lost his powers, surrounded by a vat of Kryptonite. The man of steel has been reduced to a man of straw. Will the world lose its superhero? Who can save him? How to cross the Kryptonite toxic enough to immediately kill any human? How to lift Superman’s collapsed but still living body and carry him safely back? No super powers, no magic wand. He can only be saved by creativity, ingenuity and teamwork. Four teams of Hackham East staff were sent to the rescue. Four teams collaborating together used their combined skills, knowledge and imagination to save a Superman figurine during the student free day on the first day of term. The staff used coding to program robots to which they engineered different devices made from junk materials to travel the distance over the “kryptonite” surface, avoiding objects to cleverly catch Superman and bring him back to safety. As you can imagine, staff were highly engaged, not wanting to stop for lunch. Prototypes were designed, tested, discarded, modified and refined until a suitable solution was found. A range of digital technologies were employed to successfully complete the task. This is an example of integrated learning that students will be undertaking. It is radically different to sitting at a desk, quietly answering questions from a book. Prior to this hands on learning, the staff watched a documentary on the future of work which highlighted the disruption to employment that digital technologies has caused. Robots have replaced manual labourers, machines have replaced workers in agriculture. Many of the jobs of today will not exist for the children at school now. We are educating children for jobs that have not yet been imagined. To be successful in the future children must learn the skills of problem finding as well as problem solving. Coding, computational thinking, being able to collaborate with others to find creative solutions to real problems are some of the skills they will need to develop to be successful in the future. They will need to be flexible and able to nimbly adapt to a rapidly changing world. They will need persistence, resilience and grit and not give up when things are hard or not enjoyable. To help children develop these skills, we must do things differently. Literacy and Numeracy are the foundation for success on to which we are building the skills and dispositions of Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM of which Sally wrote in the last editorial) and the ability to self regulate, self manage and be self motivated. To save Superman, to save our planet, to create a successful future, our students will need to do things vastly different to the generations before them who have created the problems and challenges of the present and at Hackham East we will leap tall buildings to equip our students to do so.
