GENERAL INFORMATION
z Population:
2´300,000 inhabitants.
z Population growth rate (1990-91): 2.50%
z Area: 32,440 hectares, (only 18,000 are
occupied)
z Guayaquil is one of the main ports in South
America
z Average temperature: 29ºC (annual)
INSTITUTIONAL FRAMEWORK
•
Regulatory agency: CTG (Comisión de Tránsito del
Guayas), and National Council of Land Transport.
•
Operation: Private single operators gathered in cooperatives
and companies.
•
New routes are approved by CTG based on request by the
operators and on “studies” made by CTG:
•
RESULTS:
• There are more buses than needed.
• Very difficult management of the system.
• High operating costs.
• High accidents rate

capacity.

operators are grouped in 72 companies
and cooperatives.
z 20% of them make up 43% of buses and
47% of the routes.
z There is over supply of buses and operators,
which increase transport costs.

Technology integrator can use the rest of the memory for

Smart Card can do the following:
– To process data at a speed of 150-350 miliseconds.
– Identify special fare users, such as students, handicapped
persons, elderly.
– Identify drivers and authorized personnel.
