Indigenousartists,songwriters,composersinvitedtosubmitoriginaldrumsongtoserveasthe
officialThemeSongforTeamBC
Victoria,BC(April18,2017)–IndigenousSport,PhysicalActivity&RecreationCouncil(I·SPARC)is
pleasedtoannouncethelaunchofacompetitionforIndigenousartiststocomposeandsubmitan
originaldrumsongtobeusedasTeamBC’sofficialthemesongattheNorthAmericanIndigenous
Games(NAIG)andfutureTeamBCprograms.ThedrumsongcompetitionisopentoallIndigenous
artists(singer/songwriters,composers,musicians)acrossBritishColumbiaandthewinningartistor
groupwillreceivea$3,500prizeaward.
ThisisanexcitingopportunityforIndigenousartiststobeapartofTeamBC’slegacy.Theselectedsong
willbeunveiledattheToronto2017NorthAmericanIndigenousGames(NAIG),July
16-23,2017,andsungatallfutureeventsinwhichTeamBCparticipates(e.g.National
AboriginalHockeyChampionships).
Theoriginalcompositioncanincludebothtraditionalandcontemporaryelements,
IndigenousandEnglishlanguage,butmustbesungtothebeatofadrum.The
compositionwillcapturethespiritandpassionofTeamBCandasourthemesong,TeamBCathletes
andcoacheswillsingitthroughoutthedurationofthe2017NAIG.ThesongwillbeusedtoinspireTeam
BCduringcompetitionsandtocreateauniquepresenceattheOpeningandClosingCeremonies.

ThedeadlineforsubmissionsisMay18,2017.ThecontestwinnerwillbeannouncedinJuneof2017.

TheIndigenousSport,PhysicalActivity&RecreationCouncil(I·SPARC)isresponsibleformanagingthe
TeamBCProgramsfortheNorthAmericanIndigenousGames(NAIG)andtheNationalAboriginal
HockeyChampionships(NAHC).ThroughthesupportandoversightofitsTeamBCWorkGroupand
ProvincialSportCommittees,I·SPARChasestablishedacomprehensiveTeamBCprogramthatincludes
provincialdevelopmentprogramsandselectionprocessesforathletesandcoachesthatwillcompete
onbehalfofBritishColumbiainnationalandinternationalcompetitions.Forthe2017NAIG,over500
IndigenousathletesandcoacheswillbeselectedtorepresentBritishColumbiainthefollowing13
sports:3DArchery,Athletics(Track&Field,Cross-Country),Badminton,Basketball,Canoe/Kayak,Golf,
Lacrosse(Box),RifleShooting,Soccer,Softball,Swimming,Volleyball,Wrestling.
