IB TRANSITION CIVICS AND GOVERNMENT CURRICULUM SUMMARY
The purpose of the summary is to present an overview of the curriculum. Parents, community, and teachers of other
disciplines are the intended audience of the curriculum summary. The 10th grade Civics and Government curriculum
is designed to develop a student's understanding of government, civics and the role of the individual in society. It will
extend a student's knowledge from the 9th grade International Studies course while providing a framework for future
inquiry into events of the 20th century. The course is broken down into eight units, which are taken from the Preamble
of the Constitution of the United States. The units are listed below.

Unit 1, We the People
Introduction of the Constitution's Preamble.
Unit 2, Promoting the General Welfare
• Justify whether the current US Congress is
too broken to 'promote the general welfare' of
the United States of America.

Unit 3, Insuring Domestic Tranquility
Analyze and Explain the roles of the 21st
century American president.
Article Two of the Constitution.
Unit 4, Establishing Justice
Define the American Justice System and
examine its role in "establishing justice".

Unit 5, Providing for the Common Defense
• To what extent does a UNION “provide for the
common defense” by defending that union
“against all enemies, foreign and domestic?”
Unit 6, Securing the Blessings of Liberty
• Examine whose job it is to “secure the
blessings of liberty,” the citizen or the
government.

UNIT 7, A More Perfect Union
Compare and contrast the merits of
isolationism versus interventionism.
UNIT 8, To Ourselves and Our Posterity • U.S. Government’s development of domestic
policy to ourselves and our posterity (future
generations).
