As we approach Easter we will have many thoughts
occupying our minds; the forthcoming feast day,
weather and the floods, the state of the economy
and the money in our pockets (or lack of it). Maybe we chose to give
up something we really like for Lent, ice-cream, chocolate, cheese, or
wine, amongst other things, and we are relieved there are only three
more weeks to go.
But consider this – there are so many people in the world today who
don’t have any choice at all. The act of giving up something is a daily
occurrence and not necessarily of their choosing but something
forced upon them. They have had to give up their land, their homes,
their livelihoods, their families, their dignity and in many cases they
have given up hope.
Perhaps between now and the end of Lent we could give up
something extra, say just a few moments each day to thank God for
our good fortune and to appreciate just how lucky we are to have so
many options to choose from – and to say a prayer for those less
fortunate than ourselves.
I wish you all the very best as we look forward to celebrating the
wonderful Easter event and take encouragement from it to strengthen
our faith.

WHAT HAPPENED TO YOUR £10?
Have you used your talents wisely?
About a year ago our Rector, James Howson,
handed out £10 notes at ST Andrew’s with the
suggestion that we might use our talents to increase
the amount by Easter 2014.
Did you use it wisely, fritter it away or bury it? Now is the time to return
the result for the benefit of St Andrew’s Appeal Fund. You can return it
anonymously or tell us who you are. Either way return it to Michael
Staff or Geoff Ellis or post it through the Rectory letterbox. We’d also
love to hear how you ended up with the amount you did!
FAMILY SUPPORT EASTER WALK
Family Support Work will be holding their annual walk on Monday 21st
April starting at 9.30am. Last year’s walk was very successful, drawing
in supporters from all over Sussex and raising nearly £12,000.
This year’s walk will follow the same circular route, starting and finishing
at Alfriston War Memorial Hall. It is approx. 7 miles long. So help us to
raise £12,000 or more this year by walking and gathering sponsorship
from friends and family – dogs welcome – the more the merrier. If you
are unable to walk and wish to help, we will
still need cake and refreshment makers, also
help to register and guide walkers along the
route.
Registration and sponsorship forms are
available from Marjorie Mason (487919) or
Geoff Davey (871468).

PRO MUSICA - MENDELSSOHN’S ELIJAH
On Sunday 6th April at 7.00pm Pro Musica will be performing
Mendelssohn’s magnificent oratorio ‘Elijah’ at St. Andrew’s, Alfriston.
Presented in a sensitively abridged version (the complete work is
wonderful, but runs to well over two hours) with narration, it is based on
the narratives from the Books of Kings, about the great Prophet of the
Lord, who confronted a Monarch and challenged the idolatry of his day.
Dramatic choruses, such as ‘Baal we cry to Thee’ and beautiful arias,
including ‘Lord God of Abraham’ combine to make this one of
Mendelssohn’s finest choral works.
It will feature Kathryn Sargent (soprano) Sara Gourlay (mezzo-soprano)
Robert Little (tenor) with Michael Bunting as Elijah, Mary Sitwell as narrator
and the Florentine Ensemble directed by Ray Maulkin.
The evening concludes with a glass of wine.
Tickets are £12 and available from Ray and Kathryn

"Colin and his wife recently attended an Awards ceremony
in Surrey where, together with other colleagues from South
East Coast Ambulance, he received an award. This was the
Chief Executive's Commendation for Outstanding Patient
Care. He received a trophy and a certificate. This was for
the incident which took place last summer on the South
Downs when a cyclist collapsed and Colin was the first on
the scene where he successfully revived him.
This was an extremely well deserved award and on behalf of us all we
send him many congratulations."

CUCKMERE VALLEY HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY
Our next event will be a talk at the War Memorial Hall on
Tuesday, 15th April at 7.30 pm “Unfirling the Gardens of Firle” by
the Head Gardener, Philip Fenech, preceded at 6.00 pm by a
visit from Rapkyns Nursery with a collection of their very fine
plants for sale – just in good time for planting. They will be with
us for the whole evening.
We hope many of you will join us.
Please note that before our meeting in the Hall the W.I. will be holding
their meeting at 2.00 pm in which the speaker will be Irene Wilson who
will talk about open gardens in this area, as listed in the yellow book, so
this will probably be of interest to our members. However please don’t
let this mean you won’t come to our evening meeting!
Our AGM on 6th March went very well, as the meeting was over in no
time, followed by everyone enjoying the delicious dishes you all
contributed together with a free glass each of wine/soft drinks. Many
thanks for all this and it was very good to see you all.
Jenny Gulland (tel: 870413)
ALFRISTON WOMEN’S INSTITUTE
Our next meeting will be held in the WMH on 15th April at
2pm when Mrs. Irene Willson is coming to talk to us. Mrs.
Willson organises the National Garden scheme for East
Sussex and also distributes the well known Yellow Book that
contains all the information about every garden that is
open. She is going to show us pictures of many different gardens in our
area which should be of interest to anyone who enjoys visiting gardens
and inspire many of us to get creative again in our own gardens. This is
an open meeting so non members are very welcome to join us. (A
small donation would be appreciated.)

When we age, balance, strength, mobility and flexibility can all start to
decrease without us realising it. The class provides a range of exercises
to help increase and maintain these all important functions. As a fully
qualified Exercise Instructor with 20 + years of experience (I qualified as a
District Nurse 25 years ago), I have trained in a wide range of exercise
courses, latterly a specialist course on “Balance Exercise”. Free taster
session available. If you are interested in coming along but would like to
speak beforehand, please call for an informal chat. I will be available at
the Coffee morning in the Old Chapel Centre between 10.00 – 12.00 on
Wednesday 2nd April.

VILLAGE LUNCHES IN THE WAR MEMORIAL HALL 2014
DETAILS OF OUR SUNDAY PARISH LUNCHES IN 2014 are below. We invite
all villagers to join us on any of these occasions, you would be made
very welcome. This year we are having to make a charge of £6.50 for
each home cooked, two course meal with wine available separately.
We have been reluctant to make this change but costs have risen,
including the hire of the hall. Last year, donations barely covered this.
If you’d like to come, please ring Jane Alvey 870036 or Sherry Ward

come, we always over cater to allow for latecomers!

ALFRISTON & DISTRICT AMENITY SOCIETY
Spring Supper – 3rd April 2014
At the time of writing this, we are busily preparing for our
Spring Supper, which this year will be preceded by a very
brief AGM. Papers for the AGM will be available at the event.
Members of ADAS have been sent invitations and replies are coming
in, with a deadline of Thursday 27th March. However if anyone has not
yet applied and would like to come, as soon as you read this do
enquire if spaces are still available.(871300)
We would welcome some new members on our Committee. As well as
the social events we organise we have a more serious side. We meet
once a month within a few days after the Parish Council meeting,
which an ADAS representative attends and reports on. If you feel you
would like to join our Committee you would be most welcome to
contact John Hurwood (870020) for further information.
Next month – News about our trip to the Mary Rose Exhibition, and a
further date for the Newhaven Incinerator visit.

The talk will provide an update on current issues affecting the river,
including the meanders, and give details about the various groups
developing plans.
Come along and learn more about what’s
happening and how it could affect us all. The talk will be followed by
an open discussion to give everyone the opportunity to express their
views. The Friends will feed these views back to the various groups and
committees to ensure that the wishes of the community are known
and understood. The meeting is free and open to all – you don’t have
to be a member.

AN EASTER DEVOTION
An Easter Devotion – Saturday 19th April, 6.00pm at St Andrew’s
Church, Alfriston. As part of the devotions leading to Easter Sunday
sopranos Kathryn Sargent and Sara Gourlay with Ray Maulkin (organ)
will be presenting Pergolesi’s ‘Stabat Mater’. The work lasts around
forty-five minutes and is a reflection on Christ’s death on the cross, it
contains some beautiful music made all the more poignant by the
fact that Pergolesi was only twenty-six when he composed it and died
the same year.
Retiring collection for St. Andrew’s Church.

ALFRISTON & CUCKMERE VALLEY HISTORICAL SOCIETY
First, an apology: I omitted to put a reminder of our first meeting of
the season (on 20 March) in the March issue of Cuckmere News. If
you missed the meeting as a result, I do apologise.
Our April meeting is the Society’s AGM, where we elect the various
officers for the year. The meeting is at 7.30pm on Thursday 24 April in
the War Memorial Hall. As is our custom, we will get through the
formal business quickly, so that we can welcome our speaker for the
evening.
Our speaker is Richard Filmer, who can trace his family back some
seven centuries in Kent. Richard has written extensively on
vernacular architecture, local history, and traditional trades and
crafts and his talk is entitled Traditional Kent and Sussex Trades,
Crafts and Industries. His presentation will illustrate the place of
traditional craftsmen in the south east of England – perhaps the very
last generation of the craftsmen and women still working in the
tradition of those who lived before them.
Richard is travelling from Kent to speak to us, and we hope you
come along to hear what he has to say. All are welcome.
Admission: members free, non-members £5.

A QUESTIONABLE CURRY EVENING
The Litlington village Hall was taken over by an army of cooks and a
Quiz Master on February 22, to raise £730 towards the Village Hall
building project. The maximum 64 places were sold with apologies to
the many disappointed customers.
The home-made dishes included three different curries, a goulash,
kedgeree, bowls of rice, home made naan, dal, poppedums, chutney,
washed down by Long Mann beer and wine. Then came the 50
question quiz created by Tim and Maggie Carden. For those who
could not make the evening, here are four of the questions:
1. Which sport is played on the largest pitch?
2. What is the main colour of the Light Sussex hen?
3. What labour force built the Cuckmere canal?
4. In world cup football, who was the youngest play to score for
England?
Answers at the bottom of the page
Thanks to all the cooks under Rosie Beddows’ coordination, to the
decorators who gave the Hall a festive look, and to the many other
helpers.

300 CLUB
As you know, the 300 club raises money for the War Memorial Hall,
and this month we presented Chris Morley, chairman of the WMH
committee, with a cheque for £700 from the money raised this
year. The much needed money will go towards the general
maintenance of the hall, particularly repairs to windows that need
attention. In addition to that, Hilda Burton and Peter Brain were
the lucky winners of this months draw, each winning £50. Thanks to
the new owner of the Smugglers for hosting the draw. Next month
we will be at Deans Place on Tuesday 8th April, 8pm. We look
forward to seeing you there.

MISSING ENVELOPES
Have you seen any envelopes addressed to the Rectory?
Last month an envelope was included in every Cuckmere News asking
for donations. Thank you to everyone who has returned them.
The Cuckmere News is delivered free to every home in Alfriston,
Lullington, Litlington and West Dean - nearly 600 homes. There are still
over 400 envelopes that haven’t been returned but it’s not too late! You
can still drop a donation through the Rectory door or give it to one of the
Churchwardens.
CHRISTIAN AID SPONSORED WALK - Saturday 10th May
We plan another 'Beating the Bounds' of Alfriston walk along the St Andrew’s
parish boundary, to raise funds during Christian Aid Week. A National Trust
Warden will also be with us for part of the walk. The walk is split into three
convenient sections so that participants can do part or all of the walk:Section 1 (4.75 miles) starting at 8.45 a.m. on the South Downs Way (SDW)
at the top of Kings Ride (junction with The Broadway), via the SDW and
Green Way to the Alfriston-Seaford road by the 'Welcome to Seaford'
sign.
Section 2 (3.25 miles) starting at 11.40 a.m. from the Welcome to Seaford
sign then along the Cuckmere River to White Bridge Alfriston. We shall be
accompanied by a National Trust Warden on this section which is timed
to suit walkers arriving on the 11.30 am Rambler bus from Market Square,
Alfriston and alighting at Alfriston Park.
Lunch break from about 1.15 to 2.00 pm
Section 3 (4 miles) at 2.00 p.m. from White Bridge to Long Bridge, then via
Winton Street, Comp Barn and New Barn, up the South Downs to
complete the circumnavigation, returning at about 4.00 p.m. to Kings
Ride.
If you would like to combine a lovely walk at an undemanding pace (fingers
crossed for fine weather!) with the chance to raise some money for Christian
Aid, please contact Lawrie Walker (870833) for further information and/or a
sponsorship form.

CLERGY HOUSE
I thought that I would share with you details of a campaign that the
National Trust has been running for the last couple of years. It is called
’50 things to do before you’re 11¾’
The Trust found that we are losing touch with the outdoors and children
in particular are spending 60% less time outdoors than their parents did
at the same age. With huge areas of coast, countryside and local
green space in its care, the Trust saw itself as well placed to help
reverse this trend and introduce a new generation of young people to
the joys (and physical and mental health benefits) of outdoor activity.
Childhood experiences such as building a den, rolling down a hill,
hunting bugs and pond dipping are an essential part of growing up.
To help children enjoy the simple pleasures of being outdoors a list has
been compiled of some of the easiest and fun outdoor experiences all
children should be able to do before their twelfth birthday. Even at a
small property such as the Clergy House, there is plenty that children
can do such as; run around in the rain, eat an apple straight from a
tree, go on a walk barefoot, catch a falling leaf or go bird watching.
Kids can pick up a free ’50 things to do before you’re 11¾’ scrapbook
from us and start ticking off their outdoor adventures ‘to do’ list.

ALFRISTON - VEULES LES ROSES TWINNING
Teenage twinning Group - Two teenage representatives, Helena from
Veules les Roses and Charlotte from Alfriston met in March to start
organising the teenage twinning group. The twinning between our
two communities is a wonderful opportunity for the younger
generations and we are inviting parents and their teenage children to
make the most of it. The twinning Association has already raised £300
towards a stay in a water centre near Veules les Roses, and we would
be very happy to help our newly formed teenage group raise more
money and organise their trip to France.
On the 8th of March, Nicolas Gounari, an adopted Veulais of Greek
origins and “Mr Sport” of the Veules les Roses Association du jumelage
gave a fascinating talk on the birth of the first Olympic Games.
Although his talk was in French, it was clear enough for attendees to
understand with the occasional translation. A level student Amy took
lots of notes which she said will be very useful for her Ancient Greek
course. Nicolas will be back next year with a talk on Alexander the
Great.
Another talk on the historic links between Sussex and Normandy is
being planned. Virginie Monnié, who curated the Hasting based
exhibition titled French Connection, will tell us about the historic links
between the two regions, as recorded in the Regional Archives. More
details in next month’s issue of the Cuckmere News.
Another very exciting project is our first Bastille Day celebration in
Alfriston, with Accordionist Sylvie Meheust who will provide the music
for our Bal Musette on the Tye, a sort of Barn Dance with traditional
and popular French music. More information soon.
All the activities organised by our Twinning Association are of course
open to all so you don’t have to be a member of the Association to
benefit from our links with Veules les Roses.
Don’t hesitate to contact me if you want more information or if you
wish to support us.

than today so was an even smaller self-reliant community than now
(hard to imagine but so).
In the great storm of 1987 Arthur worked for several days to clear the
roads into West Dean and around the village, and was subsequently
honoured by the villagers with a small presentation and meal. The flint
stone wall between Exceat Farm and 'Gypsy corner' was repaired by
Arthur, and also the southern boundary wall of West Dean All Saints
Church, which is why his ashes were interred adjacent to the wall.
Whilst living in West Dean my mother also worked part-time as a
housekeeper in the village, in the Manor (De Winter), White House
(Waverley), the central garden house (Martyr), the Old Barn cottages
(Knowles) and was employed by BT to keep the telephone box spick
and span. However she found life there, peaceful and beautiful as it
was, quite isolating as she did not drive. However as of that generation
she was not one to fuss or complain, but as Arthur approached
retirement they worried about coping in West Dean when older.
Although raised as a Catholic with Spanish parents, she abandoned
that religion but maintained faith as a Christian. She lived in Grove
Road, Seaford, after retirement until 3 years ago when she needed full
time care in a Nursing Home.
