More than a dozen joined in playing Left, Right, Center. At times things got really spirited and noisy as Scratch Cards were included in the pot. Closing Night A good turnout for our closing night. We all partook of a Chinese Feast that our Commodore Bruce Anderson had arranged. Our Red Sox games however took over the interest of most so the planned games were postponed to another time. November 2013 From the Commodore’s Locker Even though it is only November, I wish to welcome everyone to the 2014 boating season. Thanks to all for your support and well wishes. I look forward to working with all of you this season in ensuring Squantum Yacht Club is the club we all envision. Your Bridge and Executive Committee have been hard at work since the elections. This November, our membership approved a fair and progressive budget for the 2014 season. Thank you to all elected officials and committee chairs for volunteering your time, efforts and commitment. I love our club. I have been involved since the age of 12 through the sailing program in racing turnabout # 2501. The memories I have of those summer days sailing with good friends; Rob Healy, Susanne O’Neil, and Pat Breen kept me involved with SYC through the years with the hope that someday my children will be lucky enough to experience all the joy and love of sailing on Quincy Bay. My three children will begin sailing at SYC this upcoming summer. I became a life member in 2013 and really wanted to become more involved and give back to the mission of our club. I began my “give back” to SYC by working on the Lipton Cup Regatta. Through Lipton, I had the good fortune of being mentored by Don McGilvray PC. Little did I know that all along, he was preparing me for this leadership role in our club. Thank you Don, you are the leader who I will strive to become. I also want to thank Past Commodore’s Reid and Anderson for their ongoing education and support. My vision and hope for our 2014 boating season is to create our “One Club” by bringing our club together as a whole and building upon the family atmosphere created through the sailing program, Lipton Cup, The Dave W. Page Fishing Tournament, and the very successful Friday Night Dinners at the Sunset Bar and Grill. I hope to bridge our club by bringing sail boaters together with motor boaters, the cribbage players together with the sailing program and the anglers together with the twilight racing. Throughout the season I will be hosting ongoing events in partnership with Vice Commodore Powers and the SYC Fun Raisers. We have our annual Holiday Party scheduled for December 8th, February Super Bowl Party, St. Patrick’s Day pot luck in March and Commodore’s “Ride the Wave” night in August. I hope to increase participation in our opening night festivities in May by keeping the cost to members down. I have appointed Past Commodore Anderson as Fleet Captain. Bruce will be coordinating a number of on the water activities to increase the One Club philosophy. We will be working on creating a consistent summer twilight racing series for both children and adults. I welcome any ideas and feedback in person, phone and email. I can be reached at 781-849-0019 or through [email protected] Again, thank you for all your support. Without you, our club would just be a building on the water. One Club Paul MBYCA At the last meeting the following items were included: 1. A presentation by Sea Plan about the latest boater survey. Get it on-line at . 2. Rising Tide conference Dec 11 at 11:00 AM at Black Falcon Terminal. Please contact Frank Hart, PC if you are interested in attending. 3. Boston Harbor dredging to accommodate larger ships estimated to cost $130 million for dredging and $150 million for infrastructure. 4. NOAA to stop printing charts mid-April next year. Paper charts will still be available from other sources. 5. Legislation - It was leaked by the DCR that there will be four levels lease costs for yacht clubs. Leases will be 30 years. MBYCA is suggesting that the yacht clubs challenge the first lease agreement. It is expected that it will be possible to negotiate a decrease in the cost. 6. Still trying to get a phased in mandatory boater education law. The way that the current one is worded MBYCA is against this bill. It is missing things like a way to show education from a non-State sponsored course or for those that have a CG license. Next meeting Nov 22 at Winter Hill Yacht Club. November 2013 Meet your newly elected Bridge members! Commodore Paul Lewis Vice Commodore Maureen Powers Rear Commodore Jack Swanson, PC Past Commodore Bruce Anderson Secretary Susanne O’Neil Financial Secretary Joe Wallace, PC Treasurer Jack Wilk Our newly elected Executive Committee! Stay tuned. Kip Orlando November 2013 Leo Coyne Cribbage Tournament The long standing, annual Cribbage Tournament was a resounding success with everyone thoroughly enjoying the fun. Jack Wilk emceed the beginnings with a reminder of fond memories of Leo Coyne who instituted this Tournament. After a moment of silence for both Leo and the late Tony Allessi, another cribbage player, we got down to serious (?) business. The winners this year were Bill O’Brien, Carolyn Marks, and Mike Sample. Mike had to win a playoff game with Missy Robinson and Judith Coyne for third place. Winners Bill O’Brien, Carolyn Marks, and Mike Sample The original women participants. We had more women than men this year. I think half the Coyne families were there with us. More players in the tournament November 2013 Congratulations! To our steward Nicole Nixon who passed the Massachusetts State Bar Exam. I’ve been back doing some moderating for the SYC email server. My condition is improving from complete quadriplegic to now being able to walk slowly and I have some use of my arms and hands. And I have this Dragon software that does speech recognition and allows me to dictate text - like this email. My progress is good and I’m encouraged. Thank you for your “welcome back” greeting!
