The study which is expected to last 10 months and which will involve interviews with various waste and recycling companies; is expected to yield feedback that will be useful for the formulation of manpower policies affecting the industry in the long run. GWCS DIALOGUE WITH NEA The Environment Building auditorium was packed with General Waste Collectors as they turned up in strength to attend their annual dialogue with NEA on 20 April. Besides being informed about new regulations that would be rolled out, the audience sat through presentations from WDA, the Singapore Business Federation and NTUC’s SME Unit whose speaker Heidi Lee explained how the Lean Enterprise Development (LED) Scheme could provide a transitional foreign manpower solution to companies while they recruit or groom locals to take over from these migrant workers. The event culminated in a question and answer session with a panel that included NTUC assistant secretary-general Yeo Guat Kwang, NEA director Ong Soon San, WMRAS chairman Melissa Tan, WDA director Toh Swee Chien, SBF deputy director Yvonne Wong and moderator J.J Simon of NEA. Prior to the GWC Dialogue, WMRAS also held a Pre-Dialogue to prepare its GWC members at SBF on 15 April. ATTENTION! INDUSTRY UPGRADE COMMITTEE MEMBER SHARES WITH YOUTH ABOUT WASTE CAREERS WMRAS training and industry upgrading sub-committee member Jimmy Tay who is also Veolia’s general manager for HR spent the Saturday morning of 16 April sharing with Young NTUC members at their Green Jobs Symposium about taking up a career in the waste and recycling industry. Often misperceived by the public, Jimmy shared with the youth about the sector’s importance to our environmental health and sustainability, as well as how the industry has improved over the years as far as modern facilities, technology and career prospects go.
