ANALYSIS
Metrical Pattern
Metricalizer² is a program designed for automated
metrical analysis of German poetry. All you need
to do is copy and paste a German poem into the
blank sheet provided on the homepage. The subsequent analysis detects the structure of the text
(i. e. words, verse lines, stanzas) and segments
the words into syllables. Metricalizer² provides
the interpretation of its analysing procedure by
giving you all information about the underlying
metrical pattern and rhyme structure of your chosen poem.
Prosody
Just as anyone else Metricalizer² uses its knowledge about the prosodic structure of a text in order
to analyse its metrical pattern. Only with Metricalizer² the “knowledge” is provided by a rule based
algorithm: Over 100 rules implemented into Metricalizer² assign a certain value to each syllable,
depending on its position in a word, a verse line,
a sentence or a phrase. Thus Metricalizer² detects
the prosodical and morphological structure of a
text nearly without word lists.
Rhyme
Metricalizer² has a high quality rhyme recognition.
The program is able to identify vowel lengths,
stressed syllables, and the phonetic identity of
rhymes.
Typology
Metricalizer² is able to analyse the recurrence
model of a poem by defining the poems structure
over all stanzas by the metrical foot, the meter
or the rhyme schema. With Metricalizer² you are
now able to search for alternating meters or meters defined by the amount of stresses syllables or
poems with thorn lines.
Metrical Complexity
By comparing the results of the prosodic and the
metrical analysis of a poem Metricalizer² is able to
detect those passages where meter and prosody
do not match. Metricalizer² automatically highlights these passages and is also able to declare

Und die Sonne machte den weiten Ritt
Um die Welt,
Und die Sternlein sprachen: »Wir reisen mit
Um die Welt«;
Und die Sonne sie schalt sie: »Ihr bleibt zu Haus,
Denn ich brenn‘ euch die goldnen Äuglein aus
Bei dem feurigen Ritt um die Welt.«

Straßen, redet ein Wort! Genius, regst du dich nicht?
Ja, es ist alles beseelt in deinen heiligen Mauern,

which kind of misfit has been detected. Metrical
research in this field is thus made much easier
and will lead to new dimensions.
Accent Dissimilation
Syllable based description of accent dissimilation
is yet another ability of Metricalizer². The assigned
prosodic value of each syllable is transformed into
a numeric value, i.e. a natural number between 1
and 4. Syllables which are prosodically unstressed
– like suffixes – obtain the accent value 1, whereas the prosodically outstanding root syllables obtain the accent value 4. Metricalizer² determines
the accent dissimilation of a certain syllable position within a verse line by comparing its numeric
accent values (per occurrence throughout the
poem) with the metrical pattern, given to you as
a graphic representation.
Stanza Types
Metricalizer² knows most of the Germen stanza
types, and is able to relate the determined metrical pattern of a poem to these stanza types. Thus
Metricalizer² will help to advance research, i. e.
in the field of history of literature, by helping to
determine the allocation of stanza types during
certain decades or in relation to a certain author.
Export Function
All results of Metricalizer² can be saved in TEIXML format. So even if you are not interested in
metrical analysis you may use the Program as
XML generator operating on the highest level of
quality and validity.
Technique
Metricalizer² has been programmed with the object oriented script language “Python”, and has
now reached beta state. In May 2011 the offline
version of the program has been made online.
Project Team
Metricalizer² is a non-funded and non-commercial development by Klemens Bobenhausen and
Benjamin Hammerich – and we like to thank all
those who helped us making the job. If you have
suggestions or ideas, please do not hesitate to
contact us.
