KeyCreator Lesson KC7504 Exporting Layouts to DWG/DXF
In this lesson we are going export from a file with a
solid model and an associated layout.
We’ll start by opening up the file KC2102. If you
haven’t already done this lesson you can take a few
minutes to knock out the part.
DWG
Alternatively, if you have a file with a layout in it you
can follow along using your file instead.
Open up file KC2102.
Your screen should look like this:
Click on the LAYOUT DIALOG Icon.
A Dialog Box appears.
We’ll create a B size layout
with Instance and Part Scale
Independent and both set to 1.
We don’t need a border file
for this exercise.

We’ll use the 3
Instances/Right-Upper

Isometric View.
You can select the rendering styles you like
for the views.
Click on the OK Button. Your layout should
look like this:
You can switch back to Model Mode
and save the file. Let’s call it “KC7504.”
Now, click on the FILE Pulldown menu,
next on EXPORT, and finally on
AutoCAD DWG.
Click on the ALL DSP Option and then
on the ALL Option. Hit the ENTER

We’ll use the version 2000
translation for this exercise.
This time, make sure that the Do
Not Convert Layouts From Model
Mode Option is selected.
Click on the OK Button.
You are returned to the main
Dialog Box.
Type “KC7504ModelOnly” for the file
name and click on the OK Button.
The translation is made and a Dialog Box
appears with the summary information.
Click on the Close Button.
Now, let’s do a second
translation, again from Model
Mode. This time when you
click on the OPTIONS
Button, select the Convert
Each Layout to 2D Model
Space in Separate File
Option.
Let’s name this one “KC7504WithLayout.”

Now, open up a new file.
Click on the FILE Pulldown
Menu, on INPORT, and then on
AutoCAD DWG.
Select the “KC7504ModelOnly”
file and click on the OPEN
Button.
You may have to Autoscale the
display to see your part. Notice
that only the solid model has
been imported into this file.
If you use the DWG Import
again, you’ll notice that there are
two files created from your
second export where you named
the file “KC7504WithLayout.”
One has the exact name “KC7504WithLayout” and it contains a solid model.
The other has the name “KC7504WithLayoutNewLayout” and has the layout. (If we had
taken the time to use the Rename Function in the Layout Dialog Box to give the layout a
unique name, this would have appeared in the file name of the .dwg file.) If there had
been three associated layouts with this model, there would have been four total files
created. (1 model plus 3 layouts.)
Of course, for simple models with only one layout you can do the export from Layout
Mode and just select the “From Layout Mode Export to Model Space Option.”
