Project
You have been asked to present an award to a renaissance
thinker or philosopher whose had the largest influence on
the development of a humanist worldview. The name of the
award is the “Renaissance Thinker Award” In order to
present this award you must complete 2 tasks.

1. You will write and deliver a brief 30 second to 1 minute
speech.
2. Design and create an award that represents the award
criteria.

Award Criteria
You will present your award to the renaissance thinker for
their achievements in a specific area of study or for their
ability to:
!
- Show that the individual person is beautiful with gifts,
talents, and unlimited potential.
- Use reason, which means “thinking to find truth for yourself.”
- Have an open, curious, and questioning mind in order to achieve great things through learning.
- Be skilled in one or more areas of study (painting, sculptures, architecture, writing, teaching,
math, science or medicine.
!Task 1: Create a Speech to
Present your Award

Your first task is to write a speech explaining why your renaissance thinker deserves the award
for being the most influential in the development of a humanist worldview. The criteria for the
award is listed above. Use this information to understand why you are giving this award. Follow
the steps below to help you create your speech:

Research
1. Gather specific information about your renaissance thinker, including the correct
pronunciation or his or her name and details about their life.

2. Gather specific information about how your renaissance thinker was able to have an
influence on a humanist worldview or “way of thinking” using their own skills, gifts and
talents.

Write your Speech
!
Prepare an outline for the speech that includes:
!
1. An attention-getting opening remark.
2. A few of the most important details of their life.
3. ONE or TWO of the BEST examples the recipients works and explain how these works
show they are influenced by or had an influence in the development of a humanist
worldview.
4. Closing that is the climax of the presentation of the award.

Develop a Rough Draft
!
1. Start the speech with you attention grabber.
2. Include an explanation of the award and its importance. State the most important criteria of
the award (minimum 2 points) and why the winner was chosen.
3. Tell stories or give details about the recipient that best exemplify the criteria of the award
and why the winner is the most suitable choice to receive it. Describe the thinkers areas of
study or skills.
4. Give colorful descriptions that show why the winner’s world best represent the thoughts and
ideas behind a humanist worldview. This is where you choose and explain the best examples
of the thinkers works.
5. A closing impact statement which is like the climax of your speech.

Complete a Final Draft of your Speech
!
1. Have someone other than yourself give you feedback, make the necessary revisions and
complete your final draft.
2. Keep ONE copy of your final draft for yourself to use when you present and email a copy to
me using the following information:

- You MUST use the following subject in the subject line Renaissance Thinker Award
and your pattern. (8E, 8F, 8G, 8H)
3. On the day that you present you must hand in your rubric which is attached to this booklet.

Your second task is to create your actual award. You can choose to create a trophy, certificate,
medal. These awards can be made out of any material of your choice. You can be as creative as
you want with this however your physical award must include:

- A visual representation of the renaissance thinker or philosopher either an image (stature or
trophy or includes an image (certificate, medal) that represents the criteria of the award.

- The name of the award and the name of the recipient.
