MAN’s BEST FRIEND...
Spring will bring a renewed emphasis on drug awareness for students
at Chelan Middle/High school. The school’s administration is working
together with the ASB Executive to develop a process and procedures
for drug dog visits as part of an ongoing drug prevention program. Chelan High School has a zero tolerance policy for drug possession or use
on campus. In addition to continuing to educate students about the
dangers and consequences of drug use, plans are in place to work in
partnership with local resource officer (Bob Francis) to bring a canine
on campus. Our ultimate goal is to educate students to make healthy
choices regarding illicit substances and to ensure that these substances
are not brought on campus. Sometime in the month of February, law
enforcement will be introducing the dog at a school-wide assembly and
discussing the procedures involved while the dog is visiting campus.
The main intent of including the canine visits as part of prevention is to
deter students from engaging in high risk behavior. Should parents
have questions or require further information regarding canine visits,
they are encouraged to attend the next Parent Advisory Council Mtg.
which will be held on Monday, February 10th at 5 pm in the Library.

CURRICULUM SPOTLIGHT: BIO-MEDICAL SCIENCE
It was a hot summer morning. The emergency call cam in at 9:45 am. A man contacted the police to
report that he was worried about his neighbor, Anna Garcia. He decided to contact the police this morning because Anna’s dog had been barking excitedly for the past two hours. He tried calling Anna on the
telephone but no one answered. Both the police and EMT arrived on the scene at 9:56 am. The EMT
determined that Anna was dead. The police immediately notified the crime scene investigators as well as
the medical examiner, both of whom were dispatched to the house. Has crime been committed?
This is an excerpt from the case presented to freshman enrolled in the Biomedical Science course the
moment students walk into the classroom. They are immediately immersed in the mysterious death of
Anna Garcia and asked to investigate, document and analyze evidence to solve the case. In this course,
students explore a range of careers in biomedical sciences as they learn content in the context of real
world, hands on activities, projects, and problems. Robin Driver teaches Principles of Biomedical
Sciences. Freshman student Nora Hollingsworth is pictured holding a sheep heart prior to beginning a
dissection lab earlier this month.

HIGH SCHOOL PLAY: JANUARY 30th & 31st (7pm) & FEBRUARY 1st (1:00 pm)
Director Mrs. Marile Kunkel and the Blackhorn Drama Gilde have been busy to say
the least. Over the past two months students have been working hard in preparation
for the opening of the Musical “Once Upon a Mattress”... where a love-sick nobleman seeking to marry his sweetheart does his best to find his ruling prince a suitable
bride so that he himself may wed in this screen adaptation of the popular Broadway
musical The Princess and the Pea. No one in Prince Dauntless (Drew Carelton)'s
kingdom is permitted to marry until the prince himself exchanges vows -- a problem
hindered by the fact that the prince's overprotective mother, Queen Aggravain
(Romaine Doty), has thus far thwarted all efforts to marry her son. This does not sit
well with the honorable Sir Harry, a man whose heart longs to wed the fair Lady Larkin and after a long and arduous journey specifically designed to find the prince a
bride, Sir Harry returns to his kingdom to present Princess Winnifred of the swamps
(Sarah Kunkel). Immediately stricken by the princess, Prince Dauntless sets into
motion plans for a lavish wedding as his scheming mother cooks up a test that's
sure to send his marital plans awry. Javier Navarro (Minstrel) and Harry Cogswell
(Jester) also play key roles in the play. Victoria Smith accounts for the wonderful
piano music in the play, Brooke Jenkins is the stage manager, and Desiree Doty is
the producer. Hiedi Lopez was the costume designer . Put this one on your schedule, it promises to be highly entertaining!
