Setting up a paper in MLA format – Open Office
1. In the Formatting Toolbar, set the Font to Times New
Roman, and the Size to 12 pt. The entire paper must be
formatted in Times New Roman 12 pt.
a. If the Formatting Toolbar is not visible, go to
View → Toolbars and click on Formatting
2. Go to Format → Paragraph
a. In the Indents & Spacing tab,
set the Line Spacing to Double
3. Next go to to Format → Page
a.
In the Page Style window, click on the Page
tab.
1. Change all Margins to one inch 1”.
b. Again, in the Page Style window, click on the Header tab.
1. Make sure the Header on box and the Same content
left/right box are both checked.
2. Click OK on the Page Style box.
4. Creating the Header. Click in the Header box at the top of the page
1. Click on the Align Right button on the formatting toolbar.

2. Type your last name. Hit the spacebar once.
3. Go to Insert → Fields → Page Number.
4. Beginning your paper. Type the following
information on separate lines.

a. 1st line: Your first name and your
last name

b. Next line: Your teacher’s name
c. Next line: The course name and
the period in the format: English 1

d. Next line: The date in the format
DDMMYYYY
e. Next line: Click the Center button and type the title, using correct punctuation and capitalization. Hit the Enter

1. Click the Align Left button at the top of
the page
2. Go to Format →Paragraph, and in the
First line box, enter “.5” (½ inch).
3. Make sure all the other numbers are
set to “zero”
Your paper is now set to MLA format. You can begin typing your paper!!
