CLUB 470 * DISTRICT 5160 * ORGANIZED APRIL 29, 1926 www.rotary5160.org MEETING DATE: August 2, 2016 www.woodlandrotary.org Today's Meeting President Gary Wegener opened the meeting without fanfare by having George Berrettoni leading us in the salute to our Flag. Clancy Duppong led us in Rotary Grace. Gary thanked Dick Hoppin for meals on wheels and Roy Holmes and Mark Werum for set up. We had no photographer, so the only picture is courtesy of Kris Kristensen and his phone. Visiting Rotarians/Guests / John Smythe joined us from Woodland Sunrise. Mike Chandler once again introduced Jennifer Ward. Announcements Dick Hoppin reported that our entire beer booth assigned time slots had been filled. He e-mailed the schedule to everybody and it is also on the website. President Gary reminded us of the District 5160 Kickoff at Six Flags on August 27th. Details are on the website and in the recent Splinters. Tickets are $45, with children under two, free. John Smythe discussed the Wendy Locatelli tragedy and her family’s need of financial assistance. Wendy recently lost both legs and one arm below the elbow and part of her other hand to a sepsis infection while on vacation. The family needs help with medical expenses, including prosthetics, as well as general expenses. Willow Oak Fire Department will be hosting a fundraiser, and a flyer about this event was on the tables. The Sunrise Club raised about $1,100. We passed the pot and collected over $800. The Board was asked to consider doubling that amount. District 5160 is holding a kickoff event for the District Interact kids on Sunday September 18th either at Pioneer Park or Pioneer High School. They have asked the Woodland Clubs to host the event. Gary will have further information on this. Gary announced a quick Board meeting after the regular meeting today. The next regular Board meeting is August 15th at 4:00 p.m. at Mark Ullrich’s office. Gary also announced a Community Service Project guideline subcommittee meeting for Wednesday, August 3rd at 4:00 p.m. at Ludy’s. Birthdays and Anniversaries We had no birthdays, but we had several anniversaries. Marc Faye married Gerda on July 3, 1960 at Lake Tahoe. Kevin Haarberg married Lorie on July 27, 1996. He says he has been happily married for 15 years. 15years out of 20 “ain’t bad” according to Kevin. Alan Flory married Gerry 59 years ago, August 4th, in the garden city of Turlock. On th August 7 , Jim Taylor and Ann will celebrate 62 years. They got married in Sacramento and had a brief honeymoon in Yosemite. They just finished a trip around the world. Last for the day, but certainly not least, Roger Dorris and Connie celebrated 44 years on July 29th. They were married in Alturas. Recognition Dr. Jim McGibbon was our dreaded fine master. Happy time: Jim McGibbon was first and was happy his wife joined the 21st century as she got a new smart phone. Jim is still in the 20th century with a flip phone. Frank Gardner was happy to tell his new joke: This year’s election will be historic no matter who wins. If Hillary wins it will be the first time two presidents have slept together. If the Donald wins it will be the first time a white billionaire moved into public housing vacated by a black family. Ken Nordgren vacationed at his condo in Hawaii. Scott Johnston attended a five day wedding event for his niece at Lake Tahoe. John Smythe generously paid for a trip back east to Boston. Barbara Sonin was happy her daughter and her daughter were visiting. Brian Lin was happy his daughter successfully completed a horseback riding lesson. As a youngster Brian said he was too scared to finish his horseback riding lessons. Jim’s theme for the day was famous quotes and who said them. I was not able to get all the quotes, so please bear with me. Chuck Moore could not guess George Bernard Shaw commenting on politicians, “He knows nothing and thinks he knows everything”. Sounds like somebody running this year. Jennifer Ward, not yet officially a member, but kindly paid anyway for not recognizing a long quote from John Foster Dulles. Clyde Brooker did not know that Joseph P. Kennedy said “Don’t get mad, get even”. Chuck Maltese refused the quote and told a good dentist joke using Carl Rodegerdts as his victim. Carl said he shouldn’t tell such jokes before the visit to the dentist. Seth Wurzell was given the following quote, “If you are going through hell, keep going”. He did not know it was from Winston Churchill. Dick Hoppin did not know that Mark Twain said, “If you tell the truth, you don’t have to remember anything”. Tom Schwarzgruber, that new age wonder and free spirit, was the only person to get one right. He guessed Mahatma Gandhi for some long quote. Craig Miyamoto, Karl Diekman, and Marc Faye were also victimized. Sorry I could not get down the quotes. Rags to Riches Tom LaBrie, choosing from 17 cards, won a free lunch. Today’s Program Christian Sherrill introduced Stacy Contreras. Stacy is a fitness instructor at Cross Courts here in Woodland. She is married to Chris Contreras, a native Woodlander. They have three children, Emma, Ava, and Adam. Chris is 36 and works for the City of Woodland in the Maintenance Department. On November 26, 2015 Chris, an avid sports enthusiast, was diagnosed with a rare form of Aplastic Anemia, which is a blood disorder preventing the bone marrow from making enough new blood cells. Chris needs and is a candidate for a bone marrow transplant. Chris is Hispanic and needs a Hispanic donor. They have been searching for a donor for one and one half years. Stacy has been active in organizing donor drives. She has become familiar with donor requirements and the bone marrow donor registry which was the topic of her talk. To sign up for the registry you must be between the ages of 18 and 44. You can remain on the registry until age 61. The official website is BeTheMatch.org. To get on the registry a simple swab from your mouth is taken. You must first answer a detailed questionnaire. You cannot be a donor if you are at risk for HIV or hepatitis. The match analyzes human leukocyte antigens (HLAs) of the donor and recipient. HLA markers are found in every cell. The first donor drive organized by Stacy was at Cross Court. 700 people showed up and 350 swabs were taken. Another event was held at Raley Field. Stacy sold 1050 tickets to the game. The swabs are taken from the cheek and are placed into a database registry. A brother in law of one of Stacy’s friends got called two months ago after a December donation. He was a match for a one year old baby. Bone marrow is transplanted 30% of the time through an extraction by needle into the bone marrow in the hip. 70% of the time the donation is just like a blood transfusion. The Recipient receives the donation through a transfusion. Recovery time for the donor is just a few days. It is an outpatient procedure. Thank you Stacy for a great program. We wish you and Chris and your family the best and know a donor will be found for Chris. Upcoming Programs Next week we have Tracy Faurer from Yolo CASA. On August 16th, Cass Slyvia, the Yolo County Public Guardian will join us. Annual Events Upcoming Programs Officers/Directors Where to Make Up Roster
