A Concise
Pronouncing
Dictionary of British
and American English
J. WINDSOR LEWIS
The Concise Pronouncing Dictionary
of British and American English is a
unique dictionary prepared especially
for users of English as a foreign
language. Using the alphabet of the
International Phonetic Association
and following Professor A. C.
Gimson's new transcription in a
slightly simplified form, it records
the fluent, spontaneous everyday
usage of educated speakers in Britain
and America whose speech is least
restricted in terms of geographical
region or social grouping.
Phonetic transcriptions are given for
about 24,000 words with common
affixes like -able, -ability, -ant,
-ation, -ment, fore- and extra- to
give the user a much larger vocabulary reference. A selection of British
and American proper nouns and
common abbreviations is also
included.
Special attention has been given to
ease and speed of use. Every word is
given a separate, strictly alphabetic
entry. If a word has more than one
spelling, all the information is given
at each one. A full Introduction explains the arrangement and content,
trends of change in pronunciation,
word rhythmic patterns, stress notation and compound words. The Key
to symbols, notes on the arrangement
of entries and British and American
vowels, consonants and diphthong
charts are in easy reference form on
the end papers.

includes an audio-visual section with facilities for hearing and viewing teaching
materials; a register of relevant current research is available for reference.
In addition to joint publications such as Language-Teaching Abstracts and
A Language-Teaching Bibliography, each centre issues publications from time to
