Supporting Spanish Immersion in the Lincoln Cluster Hola from Apoyemos al Español! Do you know who we are? Apoyemos al Español assists the Spanish Immersion Program at Ainsworth, East/West Sylvan and Lincoln. We provide educational, experiential opportunity, and financial support to the over 480 students enrolled this fall in our K-12 Spanish Immersion program! Do you know what we do? Apoyemos al Español What does Apoyemos Español mean? al Apoyar is a verb that means to support, to aid, to back, to hold up, to stand by. Pronounced “Ap-o-yea-mos”. The name of the organization means we support, aid, back, hold up and stand by Spanish: the language, the culture, and our language immersion program. Photo by Sherri Diteman. What is the Apoyemos al Español Auction? Apoyemos al Español provides materials to classrooms. Ainsworth 1st grade students with science books purchased with money granted by Apoyemos al Español. Señora Gafney, Lincoln High School Spanish Immersion and IB teacher displays textbooks purchased with money granted by Apoyemos al Español. Apoyemos al Español provides scholarship & chaperone support for the 8th grade trip to Costa Rica. 2009 8th grade SI graduates prepare to tour the jungle canopy as part of their Costa Rica trip. While in Costa Rica, the students stay in Spanish speaking homes, go on morning sightseeing outings and activities, perform a service project, and attend afternoon classes at Centro Panamericano de Idiomas, a language school located outside of San Jose. Led each year by West Sylvan 8th grade families, the Apoyemos al Español Auction is both a celebration of the Spanish Immersion program and a fund-raiser. The auction is put on by 8th grade students and their families. A community-oriented event, the auction raises funds for both the entire K-12 program and the 8th grade Costa Rica trip. The event is always well attended by current Spanish Immersion families and their guests, program teachers, school administrators, and by immersion families whose children have graduated from the program. Funds raised by the auction ensure that every student in the program will have access to the Costa Rica trip. For the 8th grade students and their parents it provides an opportunity to give back to a singularly successful program. This year the event is being held on May 1 at the Tiffany Center in Portland.
