REACH Proudly Welcomes New Director
REACH is happy to welcome our new Executive Director, Andrea Anderson. Andrea
has now been with REACH of Macon County for 15 years. Andrea offered a helping hand at
Asheville Parks and Recreation before she made her way to REACH of Macon County. Within
Picture of Andrea
her line of work, she often saw families in disadvantaged neighborhoods struggling and facing
many social issue challenges. Andrea initially became interested in the services of REACH
because of her desire to make a positive difference in someone’s life.
Andrea is still learning all the responsibilities of her role as Executive
Director, but believes that it is crucial to demonstrate her leadership skills and set the tone for
the agency every day. She is incredibly grateful for her wonderful team that supports her and
commits themselves to victim services around the community.
Andrea is excited to announce that REACH is embarking on building a new domestic
violence shelter on property adjacent to our offices. The new shelter’s location will increase
clients’ ability to access needed community resources, employment opportunities, and day care
for their children. This increase in accessibility could have a positive impact on a victim's
ability to secure resources and meet their personal goals in their movement toward self sufficiency and violence free homes. In addition it will increase the agency’s ability to meet the
shelter needs of the community and be more cost effective for our agency to have our facilities
all in one location. For more information on the project go to www.reachofmaconcounty.org.

Welcome to the New Interns!
Last month we successfully completed 20-hours of
training at the Jackson County Library for new REACH volunteers
and interns . Our own David Parrish did a fantastic job conducting
the 2-day session, reviewing the beliefs and services of REACH, to
four new interns and two excited volunteers.

Last Month was Teen Dating
Violence Awareness and
Prevention Month
Teen Dating Violence Awareness and Prevention, brings national focus to the issue of teen dating
violence, highlights the need to educate youth about
healthy relationships, raises awareness among those
who care for them and provides communities with a
critical opportunity to work together to prevent this
devastating cycle of abuse.
Dating abuse isn't an argument every once in a
while, or a bad mood after a bad day. Dating abuse (or
Relationship Abuse) is a pattern of controlling behavior that someone uses against a girlfriend or boyfriend.
Abuse can cause injury and even death, but it doesn't
have to be physical. It can include verbal and emotional abuse - constant insults, isolation from family and
friends, name calling, controlling what someone wears
- and it can also include sexual abuse.
