Frequently asked questions about Chicago city stickers
What is residential parking?
Throughout the city there are residential
parking zones designed to help ease
congestion and make parking easier for
residents in that zone. Signs posted in
these zones alert you to the zone number
and parking restrictions. You can only park
on these streets if you have a city sticker
with that specific zone number listed on it
or you receive a guest parking pass from
a resident of that parking zone.
What is a guest pass?
Guest passes are used in residential
parking zones by guests of someone who
lives in that zone. They are valid for 24
hours and sold in sets of 15 for $8. These
passes are available for purchase at City
Clerk office locations. Up to 30 passes (2
sets) of passes may be purchased per address in a 30 day period.
What if I move to a new residential parking
zone?
If you move to a new zone before June 1,
you must bring your city sticker in
whatever condition along with your
original receipt to a City Clerk office
location along with proof of current
address. We will then transfer your
sticker to the new zone. There is a $10
fee for this.
What if I buy a new vehicle before my
sticker expires?
You must bring in the sticker from your
old vehicle along with your new vehicle
title information to any City Clerk office
location. We will transfer your vehicle
sticker to your new car. There is a $20 fee
for this service and it must be done within
30 days of purchasing the new vehicle.
What do I need to do if I just bought my
first vehicle?
You have 30 days from the date you
purchase the vehicle to get a new city
sticker. You must bring in your vehicle title
information to a city sticker sales location.
You can have temporary plates on your
vehicle at the time of your city sticker
purchase.
What if I just moved to Chicago?
You have 30 days from the day you move
to Chicago to purchase a city vehicle
sticker. You do not need an IL license
plate or IL driver’s license to purchase
a city sticker. To avoid a late fee, bring a
copy of your lease or mortgage and your
drivers license to any sales location within
30 days of moving here. A list of pro-rated
fees can be found at chicityclerk.com.
Where do I renew my drivers license or
license plate sticker?
Your drivers license and license plate
sticker are done at the Secretary of State’s
office. You can find more details about
their services at cyberdriveillinois.com or
by calling 1-800-252-8980.
