You Have
Helped Save
Thousands of
Animals’ Lives!
As the largest animal welfare organization in North
Texas, the SPCA of Texas rescues, heals and finds
homes for thousands of pets right here in North Texas
each year.
Please join me in thanking those involved directly
with rescue, treatment and daily hands-on care of the
animals. They are the life and energy that drives our
mission forward.
Thanks to our donors, our community and team
of dedicated staff and volunteers, we’ve made a
tremendous impact for animals in need.
With your support through adoptions, donations and
volunteering, we will continue to save lives!
Deeply grateful for your support,
In 2015, we found homes for more than 4,800 animals,
spayed and neutered more than 12,500 animals
and completed more than 3,400 animal cruelty
investigations. And that work happened because of
our community’s support.
Our commitment to rehabilitating animals and
to providing exceptional medical and behavioral
treatment for the pets in our care gives purpose to
our life-saving mission.
James Bias, CAWA
President and CEO
Additionally, the expansion and deepening of our
Animal Cruelty Investigations (ACI) efforts, including
educational programming in partnership with law
enforcement agencies, has allowed us to expand
awareness of and committment to enforcing animal
cruelty laws in Texas.
For our ACI team, 2015 was a banner year. The team
removed a total of 2,249 animals from cruelty!

Our History.
The SPCA of Texas
was incorporated
by Texas State Charter on September 22, 1938
and is a tax exempt non-profit organization
under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue
Code.
Then, in 1993, the Dallas SPCA (based
in Dallas) and the Humane Society
of Texas (based in Collin County)
merged to become the SPCA of
Texas.
We’re over 75 years old, but we trace our roots
to the late nineteenth century.
The SPCA of Texas is comprised
of two shelters and three spay/
neuter clinics located in Dallas and
McKinney and offers a wide array
of programs and services that bring
people and animals together to
enrich each other’s lives.
The June 30, 1888 issue of the Dallas Morning
News stated that the Dallas Humane Society
(the SPCA of Texas’ forerunner) was in fact the
first humane society in the state of Texas. The
agency was organized in 1888 to protect both
animals and children. In later years, the group
focused solely on animals.
The Dallas Animal Protective League and the
Dallas Society for Animal Protection emerged
in the 1930’s. The two groups consolidated in
1970, becoming the Dallas SPCA.
Over the years, we’ve seen many
shelters come and go, but our
commitment to the animals has
remained our guiding light. Today,
as ever, we’re dedicated to providing
every animal exceptional care and
a loving home.

The non-profit organization operates two shelters and three spay/neuter clinics located in Dallas and McKinney, and maintains a team of animal
cruelty investigators to respond to thousands of calls in North Texas. Moreover, the SPCA of Texas serves as an active resource center for an array
of services that bring people and animals together to enrich each other’s lives. The SPCA of Texas is not affiliated with any other entity and does not
receive general operating funds from the City of Dallas, State of Texas, federal government or any other humane organization. The SPCA of Texas is

Adoption Love Story Phoenix Rising
When our Animal Cruelty Investigations Unit found Phoenix in February of 2015, they didn’t think he would survive.
The skeletal, five-year-old Pit Bull Terrier mix was trapped under a porch with significant scar tissue, along with massive
burns, running down his shoulders and back.
It was apparent that Phoenix would
need to be rescued immediately, so
our Animal Cruelty Investigations
Unit and the Dallas County District
Attorney’s Office’s (Animal Cruelty
Unit) seized him that same afternoon.
For three months, our wonderful
veterinarians and animal care
center staff spent countless hours
nursing him back to good health with
hydrotherapy baths, a nutritious diet
and lots of TLC. It wasn’t long before
Phoenix made it to the adoption floor,
where he’d find the loves of his life,
Richard and July.
“We love our Phoenix,” July said. “He
just loves being with us and will lay in
bed with us for hours.”
Today, Phoenix lives on a farm with
several siblings who he loves to play
with.
In September of 2015, Phoenix’s
previous owner pled guilty to Class A
Misdemeanor Animal Cruelty and she
was sentenced to 2 years probation
during which she cannot own any
animals.
adoption love story Hoss’s Home
Hoss was rescued by the SPCA of Texas’
Animal Cruelty Investigations Unit in
December of 2015. He was found tucked
away in an abandoned dog house. When
we first met Hoss, he weighed one pound.
We didn’t know if he was going to make
it, but thanks to his mother’s excellent
care and a few bottle feeding sessions in
between by staff and volunteers, the little
guy pulled through and is now not only
thriving, but loving life in his new home
with his Bulldog brother, Bubba!
His mother, Hoagie, was also adopted!
During Hoss’s journey of recovery and
adoption, the SPCA of Texas shared his
wonderful story on Facebook, where
it reached more than 35,000 people.
Further, more than 2,000 people liked,
commented or shared the post!
Just two weeks later, more than 40,000
people saw the update that illustrated that
Hoss was able to thrive and grow thanks to
Hill’s Science Diet™.
The power of social media helped us
spread the word about Hoss and his
incredible journey.
Mulan Finds her Happily Ever After
Mulan, a 6-year-old solid black beauty came in through the SPCA of Texas’
Animal Cruelty Investigations Unit with four other horses on January 20, 2014.
The day she first set hoof on the
pastures at the Russell H. Perry
Animal Care Center, she was
malnourished and badly in need of
care and love.
As her mental wounds healed and
she grew in strength and stamina,
our Livestock Team worked with her
and gained her trust. As it turns out,
she is quite intelligent, and SPCA of

Each and every pet is at his or her best in a loving
home. Thank you for helping the SPCA of Texas
make that a reality for thousands of pets!
In 2015, an upsurge in our Animal Cruelty
Investigations intake resulted in animals
staying longer in our care, receiving the love
and medical treatment they so deserve and
therefore adoption numbers were lower.
Although people most often associate the SPCA of
Texas with dogs and cats, we offer other animals for
adoption such as horses, pigs, sheep, birds, donkeys,
ponies, cows, goats, ducks, chickens, rabbits, ferrets,
rats, guinea pigs and others.
The SPCA of Texas does not euthanize animals for
lack of space, and there are no time limits on how
long pets stay with us. We are a managed intake
shelter.
transfer partners
Working with other organizations increases the
likelihood of a happy ending for all animals. We
currently have 21 transfer partners. In 2015, we
transferred 1,542 animals between our partners.
“We had an awesome experience at the SPCA of Texas—the staff
was amazing! The volunteer we interacted with was very friendly,
knowledgeable & helpful. All the staff we spoke with were excellent!”

The SPCA of Texas partners with many municipal
and private shelters and other rescue organizations
to give animals another opportunity to find a
loving home. When we have room, we transfer in
adoptable animals from those partners into our
own animal care centers. When we have animals
that might be a better fit elsewhere, we transfer out.
For example, any feral cats that come in are
transferred to Barn Cats, a rescue organization
that places feral cats in need of a safe, outdoor
home. In 2015, we started a new partnership with
the Doris Day Equine Center to transfer horses
in need of extensive training. Since 2013, we
also transfer livestock to Cleveland Amory Black
Beauty Ranch when they have space available.

In January of 2015, Big Fix for Big D expanded its
services, for a limited time, in an effort to help more
Dallas residents care for their companion animals and
community cats.
In the first two months of 2015, Big Fix for Big D partners
provided 2,876 free spay and neuter surgeries and
vaccinations for companion animals and community
cats in Dallas. And since it kicked off in April 2012, the
program has provided more than 25,000 surgeries as
well as vaccinations and city registrations.
The response was overwhelming, so when the third
year of the program was officially over, the SPCA of
Texas provided 200 additional surgeries for people
living in eight Dallas zip codes thanks to funding from
the Companion Animal Funders Coalition, including The
Dallas Foundation, the George & Fay Young Foundation,
John R. McCune Charitable Trust, The Meadows
Foundation and The Rees-Jones Foundation.

Animal Cruelty Investigations
The SPCA of Texas is continually working to end animal
cruelty and neglect in North Texas. Unfortunately, these
are ongoing issues. In 2015, The SPCA of Texas’ Animal
Cruelty Investigations (ACI) Unit, formerly known as Rescue
and Investigations, had six full-time humane investigators,
one law enforcement instructor, one supervisor and one
case manager.
Our dedicated team answers on average over
4,000 calls every year concerning animal cruelty and
neglect. The calls range from an owner not feeding or
sheltering an animal properly, to puppy mills, hoarders,
dog fighting, or in some cases, torturing an animal or
several animals. Most animals investigated for cruelty
or neglect are dogs, cats, horses and livestock.
In 2015, our ACI Unit investigated 3,469 reports of
cruelty or neglect, and rescued 2,249 animals, who
were transported to our facilities. The SPCA of Texas’
veterinary and animal care staff provided the medical
and rehabilitative attention they needed.

The SPCA of Texas Animal Rescue Center
Empowered by PetSmart Charities® Emergency Relief
The SPCA of Texas purchased an old tire warehouse at 2121
Lone Star Drive on December 31, 2014 just 1,000 feet from
our Jan Rees-Jones Animal Care Center. The building will
flexibly serve as a temporary facility to house large-scale
animal cruelty seizures, and as a rescue center to help pet
owners and organizations throughout the region in the face
of catastrophic natural or manmade disasters.
In 2015, 1,203 animals have
already passed through its
doors. We are grateful to
PetSmart Charities, who has
been a wonderful partner,
granting us funds to purchase
kennel supplies and veterinary
equipment. The Phoebe and
Russell H. Perry Fund and The
Communities Foundation of
Texas have also been key in
supporting renovations to the
building.
We were pleased to be notified
just after Christmas that The
Snyder Foundation would be
funding the new HVAC system.
The animals that come in
through large-scale seizures
will be in fragile condition, so
ensuring a proper environment
will help put them back on the
road to health and their future

Rescue, Rehabilitate and Re-home
The SPCA of Texas works to bring in as many pets as
we can based on our resources. Our staff and volunteer
teams give these pets exceptional care and then find
loving homes for as many as possible. The SPCA of Texas
does not euthanize based on time or space. We only
euthanize animals for untreatable or contagious medical
conditions or serious behavioral issues.
