Topic Map to the DRAFT of the English Language Development Standards, 2012 Edition, Kindergarten through Grade 12 This document outlines the strands provided in the September 2011 draft of the WIDA ELD Standards, 2012 Edition. Unlike in prior editions, this edition will not offer one strand for each language domain within each standard for each grade‐level cluster. WIDA has been gathering feedback that language teachers and administrators wanted to have close ties between the ELD standards and grade‐level Common Core or state academic standards to facilitate conversations around academic learning and to promote collaboration among educators serving English language learners. In keeping with the WIDA philosophy that our standards’ representation should be flexible rather than fixed, and invite creativity by its users, the 2012 Edition will include a sampling of grade‐level strands for educators to explore and consider transforming to fit their particular curricular goals. Please note that the grade‐level tables in this document are color‐coded by grade‐level cluster. One of the strands for each grade level is referred to as an “amplification” or “amplified strand.” In these matrices, we exemplify the three criteria that constitute our Performance Definitions: Discourse Complexity, Language Forms and Conventions, and Vocabulary Usage. In addition to strands for each of WIDA’s five ELD standards, the draft 2012 Edition offers one “complementary” strand per grade level to reach out to all educators who work with English language learners throughout the school day and emphasize the significance of language learning that takes place outside of the core academic subjects represented in WIDA’s standards. We wish to recognize that academic language permeates schooling and that all teachers are in fact language teachers. This is the breakdown of standards and complementary strands in the 2012 Edition draft: Complementary Strands: WIDA’s ELD Standards: 1‐ Social and Instructional Language Language of Music and Performing Arts 2‐ Language of Language Arts Language of Multiculturalism 3‐ Language of Mathematics Language of Visual Arts 4‐ Language of Science Language of Health and Physical Education 5‐
