School-Parent Compact
2016 – 2017
The KIPP Poder Academy, and the parents of the students participating in activities, services, and programs funded by
Title I, Part A of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) (participating children), agree that this compact
outlines how the parents, the entire school staff, and the students will share the responsibility for improved student
academic achievement and the means by which the school and parents will build and develop a partnership that will
help children achieve Texas’ high standards.
This school-parent compact is in effect during school year 2016 – 2017.
School Responsibilities
KIPP Poder Academy will:
Demonstrate tenacity by working hard:
 arrive at KIPP Poder Academy during summer school and the regular school year Monday-Friday at 8:00am and
remain until the job is done.
 arrive at KIPP Poder Academy for all schedule Saturdays during the year.
 be the constant, not the variable, in the implementation of rigorous lessons and strong classroom management.
 actively learn, continue learning and support the learning of others.
 accept additional roles and responsibilities.
 never give up hope.
Demonstrate empathy by listening and honoring everyone:
 be available to students and families via phone and email.
 protect the safety, learning and rights of all individuals.
 use circles to provide an opportunity for students to share feelings and resolve conflict.
 get to know all of my students and families.
Demonstrate collaboration by being an active member of my Team and Family:
 meet regularly with my colleagues.
 incorporate opportunities for collaboration in to my lesson plans.
 work WITH students and families to solve problems.
 keep students and families informed of academic and behavior progress.
 strengthen Team and Family by encouraging family involvement in all school events.
Demonstrate courage by striving to model our values every day:
 collaborate with our school administration to ensure we have a rigorous curriculum and balanced assessment
system.
 ask for help when I need it.
 ask students, families and colleagues for suggestions on how to improve.
 apologize when necessary and work to rebuild relationships with students, families and colleagues.
 remain open to new ideas.

Parent Responsibilities
We, as parents, will support our children’s learning in the following ways:
Understanding that school attendance is necessary for my child’s success.
 I will make arrangements for my child to be at school on time every day. This includes ensuring they get to the
bus on time or are dropped off at the school on time.

 I will ensure that my child understands that bus transportation is a privilege and I will support all bus
expectations.
 I will call the school if my child is going to be absent.
 I will schedule appointments and vacations during non-school time to the best of my ability.
 I will encourage my student to participate in all KIPP Poder Academy events, after school activities and field
trips.
Supporting my child on their path to college and make education a priority. This means:
 I will ensure my child has a quiet area to complete his/her homework every night.
 I will check my child’s homework and school agenda every day.
 I will look over all graded papers, progress reports and other letters home. I will call a teacher or the front office
if I have questions.
 I will monitor my child’s progress and work to help them improve.
 I will allow my child to call her/his teachers or classmates if she/he needs help.
 I will ensure my child has the necessary school supplies and school uniform.
 I will attend all parent nights and conferences.
Supporting the KIPP Poder Academy school culture. This means:
 I will learn and promote systems and procedures of KIPP Poder Academy.
 I will support and respect all KIPP Poder Academy Team Family.
 I will communicate directly and politely with teachers or staff members regarding concerns I have.
 I will try my best to participate in school improvement through volunteering time, expertise, resources and/or
leadership.
 I will maintain the expectation that my child will go to college in the future.

Understanding that my choices play a big part in my journey to college and have a huge impact on those around me. I
promise to do my very best every day.
Demonstrating tenacity by working hard:
 I will come to school every day on time. In the event that I am sick or have an appointment, I will contact a
teacher or friend to get any information I missed.

Demonstrating empathy by listening and honoring everyone:
 I will get to know all of my teammates and let my teammates get to know me.
 I will honor and respect every one as they are, including myself.
 I will participate in community circles by listening to all of my teammates, sharing when it is my turn and helping
to maintain a positive, supportive environment.
 I will acknowledge and try to understand the feelings of others and apologize when needed.
Demonstrating collaboration by being an active member of my Team and Family:
 I will value all of my teammates’ ideas and have a positive attitude.
 I will call other students or teachers for help.
 I will actively participate in group conversations and projects.
 I will work on making our teamwork motto happen:
If there is a better way, we find it.
If there is a problem, we solve it.
If we need help, we ask for it.
If a teammate needs help, we give it.
Demonstrating courage by striving to model our values every day:
 I will ask for help when I need it.
 I will do what I know to be right, even when it is really hard.

Additional Required School Responsibilities (requirements that schools must follow, but optional as to being
included in the school-parent compact)
KIPP Poder Academy will:
1. Involve parents in the planning, review, and improvement of the school’s parental involvement policy, in an
organized, ongoing, and timely way.
2. Involve parents in the joint development of any schoolwide program plan, in an organized, ongoing, and timely
way.
3. Hold an annual meeting to inform parents of the school’s participation in Title I, Part A programs, and to explain
the Title I, Part A requirements, and the right of parents to be involved in Title I, Part A programs. The school will
convene the meeting at a convenient time to parents, and will offer a flexible number of additional parental
involvement meetings so as many parents as possible are able to attend. The school will invite to this meeting all
parents of children participating in Title I, Part A programs (participating students), and will encourage them to
attend.
4. Provide information to parents of participating students in an understandable and uniform format, including
alternative formats upon the request of parents with disabilities, and, to the extent practicable, in a language
that parents can understand.
5. Provide to parents of participating children information in a timely manner about Title I, Part A programs that
includes a description and explanation of the school’s curriculum, the forms of academic assessment used to
measure children’s progress, and the proficiency levels students are expected to meet.
6. On the request of parents, provide opportunities for regular meetings for parents to formulate suggestions, and
to participate, as appropriate, in decisions about the education of their children. The school will respond to any
such suggestions as soon as practicably possible.
7. Provide to each parent an individual student report about the performance of their child on the State
assessment in at least math, language arts and reading.
8. Provide each parent timely notice when their child has been assigned or has been taught for four (4) or more
consecutive weeks by a teacher who is not highly qualified within the meaning of the term in section 200.56 of
the Title I Final Regulations (67 Fed. Reg. 71710, December 2, 2002).
Optional School Responsibilities
To help build and develop a partnership with parents to help their children achieve
the State’s high academic standards, the name of school will:
1. Recommend to the local educational agency (LEA), the names of parents of participating children of Title I, Part
A programs who are interested in serving on the State’s Committee of Practitioners and School Support Teams.
2. Notify parents of the school’s participation in Early Reading First, Reading First and Even Start Family Literacy
Programs operating within the school, the district and the contact information.

3. Work with the LEA in addressing problems, if any, in implementing parental involvement activities in section
1118 of Title I, Part A.
4. Work with the LEA to ensure that a copy of the SEA’s written complaint procedures for resolving any issue of
violation(s) of a Federal statute or regulation of Title I, Part A programs is provided to parents of students and to
appropriate private school officials or representatives.
