14 Quartermaster/Operation Desert Storm Scholarship Fund
The 14th Quartermaster Detachment was a United States Army Reserve water purification unit stationed in
Greensburg, PA. During Operation Desert Storm the Detachment lost 13 soldiers in an Iraqi ballistic missile attack
on 25 February 1991.The 14th, which had been in Saudi Arabia only six days, suffered the greatest number of
casualties of any allied unit during Operation Desert Storm. This scholarship was established to honor and

remember the service and loss of the members of the 14 Quartermaster and the sacrifice service men and
women and their families make each day for the United States of America
Eligibility for this scholarship is provided to two types of applicants:

Westmorland County High School students who are interested in pursuing an eventual career within a
branch of the military, or,
Whose parents (s) is a veteran or currently serving in the United States Army (to include Army Reserves
who have seen active duty).
The scholarship is not based on financial need; however, financial information will be requested. The applicant
must have a solid academic history with a grade point average of a C or above. The applicant must effectively
communicate why they wish to pursue a career within the military, or, how military service has played a part in
their family dynamic, how the service or continuing service of a parent has shaped their character and future
plans.
The following criteria will apply:
1. Use scholarship at: 2 or 4 year college or technical school.
2. Complete an application.
3. Have a high school GPA of C (or its equivalency) or above.
4. Include a copy of your most recent transcript.
5. Write and submit an essay: A 500 (minimum) word essay explaining why they wish to pursue a career within
the military, or, how military service has played a part in their family dynamic, any challenges or obstacles that
were experienced as a result of a parents’ service and how their future plans have been shaped or influenced
by the military. Please remember; this scholarship was established to honor the service and loss of members of

the 14 Quartermaster and as such ‘service before self’ is a key component of the recipients’ worthiness.
Final selection of the scholarship winner will be decided (subject to the approval of the Board of Directors of The
Pittsburgh Foundation) by a Scholarship Advisory Committee of The Community Foundation of Westmoreland
County. No member of the Advisory Committee, or his or her immediate family, is eligible for scholarship
assistance during his or her tenure on the Advisory Committee.
The Community Foundation of Westmoreland County shall notify the chosen scholarship recipient of its decision.
The scholarship payment will be made once the selected student confirms to the Foundation which school he or
she will be attending. Payment will be made directly to the school for the student.
This Scholarship is valued at $1,000. More than one scholarship may be awarded.

APPLICANT ESSAY
Write and submit an essay: A 500 (minimum) word essay explaining why you wish to pursue a
career within the military, or, how military service has played a part in their family dynamic, any
challenges or obstacles that were experienced as a result of a parent’s service and how their
future plans have been shaped or influenced by the military. Please bear in mind the
circumstances that led to the establishment of this scholarship.
VERIFICATION PAPERWORK
Please submit a copy of your parent’s (s) service record/military paperwork that demonstrates
current service where applicable, or, acceptance into a military division or academy.
LETTERS OF RECOMMENDATION
Please submit one letter of reference from a non related family member who can attest to your
character and family circumstance.
The reference should include the applicant’s name, the name of the person providing the
reference, position (if applicable), signature and date signed. The reference should address the
following: (1) the applicant’s citizenship, concern for others, responsibility, initiative and
general interests; and (2) qualities that most commend the applicant; (3) any personal sacrifice
the applicant has endured during their parent’s military service.
GENERAL
