Dr Anita Kale, a consultant with the Department of
Obstetrics & Gynaecology at the National University
Hospital, answers your pregnancy related queries.
What causes bleeding in the first trimester of pregnancy?
Bleeding in early pregnancy is not normal; but it is fairly common. In early pregnancy, one
might get some light bleeding called ‘spotting’, when the pregnancy implants itself into the
wall of the womb. This is also known as implantation bleeding and it often occurs around the
time that the first period after conception would have been due.
The first and foremost differential diagnosis of bleeding in the first 12 weeks of pregnancy
is miscarriage or a failed pregnancy.
Bleeding may also arise from non-uterine sources, for example, from a cervical polyp
or infection. Thus, it is important to see a specialist to evaluate the degree of bleeding and
ascertain the source and the cause of bleeding.
Very often, no obvious cause can be found. In this situation, we can only confirm that the
pregnancy is viable and ongoing by doing an ultrasound scan.
How much weight should I gain during
pregnancy?
Recommended weight gain depends on the pre-pregnancy
weight. For those with normal BMI, recommended weight
gain is 12-16 kg. Those who are underweight to begin
with, recommended weight gain is 14-18 kg. In overweight
women, recommended weight gain is 7-11 kg.
