Do you need help with transport?
getabout Northumberland is a voluntary car scheme which
is an organised form of lift giving. Volunteer drivers use their
own vehicles to provide door-to-door journeys for people
who are unable to use either their own private transport or
conventional public transport.
• Medical appointments
• Shopping and social outings
• Visiting local clubs, groups,
organisations and day centres
• Visiting family and friends
• Visiting church and lunch
clubs
• Going to the hairdressers or
the theatre
Remember, our volunteers can offer you far more support than
many other transport options.

How much does it cost?
An annual membership fee of £6.00 is required to
join the scheme. We will talk through how getabout
Northumberland works, answer any of your questions, help
fill out the form and pay you a home visit if you wish.
The cost of your journey is calculated from the volunteer
drivers’ home to your destination and back at 50p per mile. As
of 1 September 2012, anyone who receives a concessionary
bus pass is entitled to a 20% reduction bringing down the
cost of a journey to 40p per mile. We will then invoice you
once a month, which means you needn’t carry loose change
with you either.
What vehicles are used?
WRVS volunteers use their own cars and all volunteers are
fully trained, CRB checked and insured. That’s
why our drivers are much more than just a car
service. They will help you in and out of the
vehicle, assist you to your destination and wait
with you for company and support.

pick up your pension and your bits and bobs,
without carrying heavy bags on and off the

Our drivers will even arrange to do your shopping for you, if
you are unable to do it. You will only need to pay for the cost
of the journey.
If you have a carer, they can come along free of charge. You
are also able to bring a friend along with you, as long as they
are a member of the scheme.

you could offer your services as one of our volunteer drivers?

of other people in your community.
Opportunities are available for people who have their own car
and would like to help with the voluntary car scheme.
All posts are flexible and can be fitted around your availability.
Opportunities are also available for weekend and evening
volunteering to fit around your work commitments.
