Eight of the world’s Top 10 players lined up at the start of the 2017 Mutua Madrid Open, with two progressing
to the quarterfinals – No.8 Simona Halep and No.9 Svetlana Kuznetsova
Two former Madrid finalists remain in contention: Halep (2016 champion and 2014 R-Up) and Kuznetsova
(2015 R-Up)
Three of the remaining eight players are contesting their first QF at Premier Mandatory level: Kiki Bertens,
Eugenie Bouchard and CoCo Vandeweghe. Additionally, wins today would also mean a first SF at this level
for Sorana Cirstea and Anastasija Sevastova
Just one of the Madrid quarterfinalists has won a WTA singles title so far in 2017: Kristina Mladenovic (St
Petersburg). But all of the last eight have won at least one career title previously
Cirstea is the third wildcard to ever reach the Madrid quarterfinals, having also reached this stage as a WC in
2016 (also Anabel Medina Garrigues in 2013)
