Tackers Mission
The objective of the Tackers program is to
attract a significantly increased number of
primary school age children to sailing, especially
those who would not otherwise participate, and
have them participate in an initial fun sailing
experience before progressing on a pathway,
to a full learn to sail program over three main
levels, then non-competitive participation, and
long-term club membership.
The Tackers Mission emerged in response to clubs’
desire to increase rates of participation in sailing
at the grass roots level within Australia, particularly
with regard to the number of children entering the
sport. The central theme of the mission is to deliver
a more effective and structured approach to the
attraction and retention of children within sailing at
Yachting Australia affiliated clubs.
Tackers was researched, designed, and piloted
through investigating international junior sail
training programs, entry-level junior programs
in other sports, and through recognition of the
dominant child health and physical activity
messages disseminated through state and national
government. The outcome of this process was the
establishment of a strong rational for the creation
of a program specifically designed for children that
held appeal to the broader general public and could
be delivered to large volumes of participants within
Yachting Australia affiliated clubs.
About Tackers
What is Tackers?
What are the ‘Tackers Values’?
Tackers was developed to provide a junior entrylevel program for large numbers of primary school
aged children to enter the sport within yacht clubs
around Australia. The program is aimed at children
from aged 7 to 12 years and comprises sequential
development through three main courses/levels
each involving 20 hours of tuition from Yachting
Australia qualified Instructors and Assistant
Instructor who have been inducted into their role in
Tackers. The three main levels of Tackers are:
1. Kids centric.
Tackers 1 – Having Fun
Tackers 2 – Tricks & Techniques
Tackers 3 – Sailing Fast!
Children start at Tackers 1 – Having Fun and then
move up to Tackers 2 – Tricks & Techniques and
finally to Tackers 3 – Sailing Fast!
All Tackers Clubs work from Tackers Instructor
Manuals (there is a manual for each level of
the program) that outline session plans that have
been specifically designed and tested for use in
Tackers. An example of a session plan can be found
at the back of this document. Children undertake
both on-water and off-water games and activities
where practical learning takes place in a safe and
fun environment.
The Tackers program is run in OziOpti boats and
only at Yachting Australia registered Tackers Clubs.
The choice of boat was determined by its low cost,
high durability and suitability for teaching children
who are new to the sport. The boat provides entry
to the International Optimist class or any other
class which the child wishes to sail on completing
Tackers 3 – Sailing Fast!
To really understand Tackers, it is important to grasp
the ‘Tackers Values’ that underpin the program.
These values are critical for a consistently delivered,
high-quality program where children are the focus
within an environment of fun and safe participation.
