Aubree Hooper and Abigail Averill Named Farwell’s 2016 Valedictorian and Salutatorian
Farwell High School is proud to announce Aubree Hooper as
Valedictorian and Abigail Averill as Salutatorian for the Class of
2016.
Aubree Hooper, our valedictorian, is the
daughter of Barbara and Robert Hooper.
Having a strong passion for the fine arts,
Aubree has been actively involved in band,
dance, and theatre. During Marching Band
season, Aubree served as drum major, played
the clarinet, and was part of color guard. She
is involved in concert band, winter guard,
Melodic Fusion, Percussion Ensemble, and
Farwell Drama Club. Outside of school, she
has been a member of the Newman School of
Dance for the past ten years.
Based upon her academics, leadership, and community service,
Aubree is a member of Farwell’s National Honor Society and MidMichigan Community College Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society.
Being an active member in the community, Aubree’s favorite
community service project has been helping with set-up for the
Farwell Band Boosters’ annual Cabin Fever Show. She said, “I love
helping out in any way possible. Being a part of the creation of such
a wonderful show is enlightening. I have always been there from
start to finish to lend a helping hand wherever possible.”
Aubree has received many awards throughout her high school
career. She has received high honors recognition with a 3.983 gpa
and has earned her academic letter and bars as well as the President’s
Award for Academic Excellence. She is a first team member of the
Jack Pine Conference All-Academic Team. As an outstanding
musician, Aubree earned her band letter, the Arion Award as a
junior, and the John Philip Sousa Award and Band Boosters
Scholarship her senior year. Aubree was also a senior representative
on Homecoming Court.
After graduation, Aubree plans to attend Alma College to pursue a
degree in music education. She is being awarded the Presidential
Scholarship, the Scholars Summit, and a Music Performance
Scholarship through Alma College. In addition, she has earned the
Tony’s Muzik Scholarship in honor of Al Patterson, the Newman
School of Dance Scholarship, the GFWC State Art Scholarship, and
the Farwell Area Scholarship Association Scholarship.
Abigail Averill, our salutatorian, is the
daughter of Mary and Matt Averill. She
has been involved in choir, quiz bowl, and
the Farwell Early College. Abigail is
active in the Farwell National Honor
Society, the La Sociedad Honoraria
Hispanica (Spanish Honor Society), and
Mid-Michigan Community College Phi
Theta Kappa Honor Society. Leadership
and service are very important to Abigail.
She currently serves as the president of
Farwell National Honor Society and was
the secretary of the PTK Honor Society this past year through
MMCC. Through PTK, she was part of the Deadwood Grove
Committee that planned the annual haunted trail fundraiser; the
Honors in Action Project Committee exploring new frontiers; and
the Michigan Regional Committee that planned, prepared for, and
set up the state regional convention. Through NHS, she was a tutor
for credit recovery and the after school program. She also helped
with other NHS fundraising and service events such as Popcorn
Fridays, concessions, the water drive, the “Lights Out Lymphoma”
Glow Dance, Bash for Bernie, and VFW roadside clean-up.
Abigail has earned many academic accolades throughout high
school. She was the academic gold award winner in foreign
language and silver vocal music award winner in choir in 2015. As
a junior, she also earned the Michigan Technological Society of
Women’s Engineers Award. As a senior, she earned the gold award
in vocal music, the bronze award in mathematics, and the silver
award in social studies. In choir, Abigail qualified for state festival
this year and earned her choir letter and pin. A high honors graduate,
Abigail has a 3.973 gpa and has earned her academic letter, bars,
and the President’s Award for Academic Excellence. She was a first
team member of the Jack Pine Conference All-Academic Team.
Having earned the Centralis Gold Scholarship from Central
Michigan University, Abigail will be pursuing a Secondary
Education Degree in Mathematics and English. She also plans to
continue her foreign language education through coursework and
study abroad opportunities. She hopes to teach in a rural school
district and is considering teaching English abroad. She said,
“Foreign Language is a growing necessity in an increasingly
globalized world. I want to share our language with others and learn
their native tongues in turn. I also want to get involved in service
organizations and make a positive impact on my community, state,
and country.” Other scholarships Abigail has received include the
Isabella Bank Scholarship, the CMU Bookstore Book Scholarship
through Quiz Central, and the Farwell Area Scholarship Association
Scholarship.

Class of 2016 – Elementary Walk
The Class of 2016 toured the elementary school in their caps and
gowns on Monday, May 9. This was a great experience for both the
elementary students and the graduating seniors. It was a fantastic
way to help younger students think about their future success, goal
setting, and establishing expectations. For the graduates, it was a
chance to reflect upon their accomplishments and the path they had
to travel to get to this milestone in their lives. The younger students
helped our graduates understand that someone is always looking up
to them as role models. With hard work and dedication, great things
can be accomplished.
Farwell High School Honors Night
Farwell High School held its annual Honors Night on Monday, May 9. All seniors and select underclassmen were invited to receive awards.
Overall, the amount of money awarded in scholarships exceeded $200,000. Congratulations to all the award winners.
