You can see many animals in Alaska.
Some large animals, like the caribou, live
in groups, and you can see hundreds of
them. You can also see other large animals, such as moose and deer. There are
also bears and wolves. These animals are
not really dangerous. If you stay away
from them, they will stay away from you.
They are afraid of people.
Sometimes the wild animals come to
places with people. You can see deer or
moose, for example, in someone's garden.
The children and the tourists get happy,
but it's a problem for Alaskan gardeners
because these animals like to eat the
plants in gardens, and they walk all over
the grass and flowers.
A lot of people in Alaska have got pets
and work animals at home, too. Dogs are
the favorites, especially huskies. The
Eskimos used these dogs to pull sleds in
the winter. Many Alaskans now keep
huskies and go dog sledding as a sport.
There are competitions for the most beautiful dogs and the strongest dogs. Of
course, there are dogsled races, too.

Why does violence happen? Why do
some young people plan and carry out
murderous attacks on their classmates? Why didn't anyone see this
coming? Why didn't anyone intervene
and prevent them from killing?
Experts in crime, mental health,
education and social sciences have all
been trying to understand the reasons
to school violence. According to some
observations humans are aggressive,
violent and murderous to each other.
The major predators of humans are
other humans. The second point is
that all violence is not the same.
Some violence is due to bad behavior,
some is due to alcohol or drug consumption or mental illness or hate or
revenge. It is impossible to know exactly why someone kills. But, this
should not stop us from trying to understand violence. Some communities
are more violent than others.
When we become desensitized to
killing, violence increases. When death
and violence surround someone, the
value of human life can diminish and
the horror of violent death can decrease.
When we become apart from others,
violence increases. When we share common beliefs and values with others, we
are less likely to be aggressive.
When we allow hateful ideologies to
make groups or classes of people to be
viewed as different, bad or less than human, violence increases. Violence is of-
ten linked to hate. Hateful beliefs such
as racism and anti-Semitism let entire
groups to be dehumanized. The more
any group is misunderstood, the more
the unknown can fuel fear. In high
schools, this can take place when cliques
form -- athletes, rich kids, or smart kids.
When we are under the influence of
alcohol or drugs, violence increases. A
huge percentage of impulsive violence
takes place under the influence of alcohol or other drugs. This is a specific
problem with inexperienced drinkers.
We have become more efficient at
killing behaviors. Five thousand years
ago, a drunk person could kill but was
limited by what he could use to kill.
Since there were no handguns or explosives they could only kill one or two
people in one event. Today, with automatic weapons, people are killing
dozens. We practice. In games we play-paintball, video games and simulated
war games, we are becoming experts in
the behavior needed to kill.
We can buy or get guns easily. There
is a ready availability of lethal weapons
in our society. Children can get guns.
When someone is angry, drunk or hateful, the gun allows him or her to act in
lethal ways. What may have been just a
fistfight becomes murder.
While we may never understand violence, we know that we can prevent
more violence. We are not helpless.
Each of us plays a role.

Health tips for travelers
Travel is fun and exciting, but not if
you get ill. You may think, "Not
me. I won't get sick on my holiday!" However, for many people,
that is what happens. If you have
heart problem, you do not want to
make it worse. What can you do to
stay healthy? There are three things
to remember when you travel: relax, sleep and eat well.
A holiday is supposed to be a
time for relaxing, but tourists often
forget that. There are so many
places to visit: museums, churches,
parks, and shops. You want to see
as much as possible, of course, and
so you spend most of your days on
your feet which is tiring. Your feet
may start to hurt. You may get a
headache or a backache. So you
should take a rest. Do not want
your body to do too much. So sit
down for a few hours in a nice
place. In good weather, look for a
silent park bench or an outdoor
café.
Sleep is also important. If you
want to stay healthy, you need to
sleep. That is not always easy
when you are traveling. You may
have a noisy hotel room or an uncomfortable bed. If you do, you
should change rooms or even hotels. If you are young, you may
have other reasons for not sleeping.
In many holiday resorts the
nightlife is exciting. You may want
to stay out late at night. Then you
should plan to sleep during the
day. That extra rest can make a big
difference.
Finally, whatever age you are,
you must eat well. This means eating the right foods. You need fresh
fruits and vegetables and some
meat, milk, or fish. You also need
to be careful about eating new
foods. Try small amounts first to
