(with or without pallet)
Boron oxide (di-boron tri oxide), amorphous glassy
state and have two different crystalline form can be
found. Amorphous form is a solid that is colorless,
odorless, hard, glassy structure and usually produced
by boric acid dehydration method. Hexagonal boron
oxide is the most common crystalline state and found
in steady-state at normal conditions. Occurrence of
other monoclinic crystal form boron oxide is less and it
is not thermodynamically stable under normal
conditions. These crystals are hard, white and odorless.
Some Applications and Benefits
Glass
Boron oxide is used as an agent that decreases degree of melting and increase resistance to
thermal shock and thermal expansion coefficient in glass production. Boron oxide also
improves the brightness and color of the glass and increase scratch resistance and acid
resistance of the glass. It reduces the tendency to crystallize of glass. In addition, boron oxide
reduces the degree of melting of the glass while it is used as flux in glass production.
According to the expected properties of glass, ratio of boron oxide in borosilicate glass
changes from 1 % to 23 %. In glasses that the thermal resistance property is expected and
having large amount of consumption, the ratio of boron oxide changes from 10 % to 14 %.
Amount of boron oxide changes between 7-9 % and 5-7 % in textile type glass fiber and glass
wool, respectively. Furthermore, the boron oxide is also used in ceramics and enamel glaze
formulations.

Ceramics
Boron oxide is used in the production of ceramic and enamel glazes. Boron oxide has some
different function in in the formulation of these glazes. First function is arrangement of
thermal expansion coefficient between glaze and covering material. Second function is
providing formation of glass at the beginning of melting. The others are providing high
refractive index of glaze, increase the brightness of glaze to give a more decorative
appearance, reducing the viscosity and surface tension of the glaze to cook immediately and
to get very flat surface, increase mechanical properties, scratch resistance, water and
chemical resistance. Ratio of boron oxide in ceramic glaze changes between 8 % and 24 % as
weight.
Production of special boron chemicals and as catalyst
Boron oxide is used in production of inorganic boron compounds such as boron hydrides,
boron nitrides, metal borides and organic boron compounds such as boric acid esters, alkyl
aryl boranes, boronic and borinic acids. Furthermore, it is used as catalyst in lots of organic
synthesis and used for preparation of different catalyst carriers.
Metallurgy
As it is a solvent almost all metal oxides, boron oxide is used as flux in the metallurgy industry.
Electrical and Electronics Industry
Boron oxide is used in the preparation of very pure Ga-As semiconductors.
