On September 12, 2012, Elisabeth MacNamara, President of the League of Women Voters U.S., gave testimony to the U.S. Senate Committee on the Judiciary on the Citizens United Court and the Continuing importance of the voting rights act. She said, “The United States of America is the greatest country on earth. One of the things that makes our country great is that every citizen is included in our democracy. Voters make the decisions in our system of government and it is through voting that we, the people, control our country, state, county, and municipality and control our own destinies. After more than seventy years of struggle, the 19th Amendment was ratified, giving women the right to vote. The 24th Amendment abolished the poll tax and the 26th Amendment extended voting rights to citizens 18 years of age or older. The Civil Rights Movement of the 1950s and 1960s transformed American society in many ways, and voting rights was a core value and essential goal of that movement. With the Voting Rights Act of 1965, the promise of the 15th Amendment is now being enforced. Once, only white male property owners could vote, now every American citizen over the age of 18 has the right to vote.” As the East Ward Councilwoman, I cannot overstate the importance of voting in the national, state, county, and municipal elections. Take control your right to vote and stand up for your community! Don’t let others decide the fate of our country, state, and city. Let’s transform our needs into action by casting a ballot! See you soon. I do not want to deny Councilwoman Caldwell-Wilson credit for her support and ideas. In Volume 1, Number 1 of the Accountable and Responsive Newsletter the Landlord Ordinances section stated “On October 5, 2010, I introduced a revised version of our Landlord Ordinance.” This statement is factually incorrect. Ordinance 10-49 was sponsored by Councilwoman CaldwellWilson, supported by all of council on the 1st reading.
