Huntly Recovery Hub supported by Tesco
Here’s their thank you to Tesco:
“Dear Tesco's
On behalf of the The Huntly Recovery Hub, we would like to thank you for the wonderful stuff you
have supplied to us over the past few weeks through the fair share food cloud initiative.
Some product we have been able to store and keep for our prize bingo event which was held today.
We had 25 people in total, some of which joined us from our partnered recovery cafes from
Fraserburgh & Banff.
The prizes were fantastic, the food was excellent and a great time was had by all.
A very big thank you to Tesco's Huntly for all their support towards the Huntly Recovery Hub.
It certainly is very much appreciated.
Kind Regards
Diane Ord, Robert Reid, volunteers, Cairscotland, Aberdeenshire's Drug Partnership and all
attendants at The Huntly Recovery Hub.”

Alcohol Marketing and Children
People who start drinking early in life are more likely to become binge and problem drinkers.
Underage drinking can affect normal brain development and present other significant risks to
children’s wellbeing.
Studies observing effects on children consistently report that exposure to alcohol marketing leads
young people to drink more, and to drink at an earlier age.
The current self-regulatory systems that govern alcohol marketing are not meeting their intended
purpose of protecting children from exposure to alcohol marketing or alcohol marketing designed to
particularly appeal to children. Existing UK advertising codes are so weak that young people are
regularly exposed to alcohol marketing which they find appealing.
Such permissive regulation has helped normalise alcohol so that many see it as an unremarkable
product and forget the harm it can cause. For example, licensing officers regularly hear enquiries
from commercial soft play areas and other unsuitable contexts for an alcohol sales licence due to
‘customer demand’.
A survey Alcohol Focus Scotland carried out
demonstrated the impact of such normalisation by
finding that 10 and 11 year olds were more familiar with
certain beer brands than leading brands of biscuits, crisps
and ice cream.
Aberdeenshire Alcohol and Drugs Partnership Lead
Officer Wayne Gault discovered the weakness of the
current system after raising concerns with the industry
funded Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) following a
recent incident.
“In the summer holidays I took my 13 year old son and a
group of his mates to see ‘Central Intelligence’, a 12A
juvenile comedy at the local cinema.

I was astonished to find that before it ran the audience, mainly teenagers, were exposed to almost
20 minutes of back to back alcohol adverts. ASA’s weak response, almost 5 months later, showed
that they just don’t take this issue seriously.
Our kids are precious and they deserve to experience an alcohol-free childhood free from exposure
to alcohol marketing.”
Alcohol marketing has no place in childhood. All children should play, learn and socialise in places
that are healthy and safe, protected from exposure to alcohol advertising and sponsorship.
Growing concerns about the impact of advertising normalising alcohol as an ordinary safe product
rather than the carcinogenic and addictive drug that it is has led to the launch of the national
campaign #alcoholfreekids.
The campaign seeks to raise awareness that the current advertising codes of conduct are failing to
protect children, and that it is time to take effective action in Scotland to ensure that children can
play, learn and socialise in places that are free from alcohol marketing.
Local Alcohol and Drug Partnerships, NHS Grampian, Children 1st, the Scottish Cancer Prevention
Network and the medical Royal Colleges, as well as the majority of MSPs (72) and various local
politicians have signed up to the campaign pledge:
"I believe that alcohol marketing has no place in childhood. All children should play, learn and
socialise in places that are healthy and safe, protected from exposure to alcohol advertising and
sponsorship."
Now the campaign is asking children and young people's organisations, health groups and anyone
else concerned about this issue to also sign up.
You can play your part too by:
1. Signing up to the pledge at http://www.alcohol-focus-scotland.org.uk/campaignspolicy/alcohol-marketing/
2. Raising concerns with the ASA should you encounter any examples placing youngsters at risk
by emailing [email protected].
3. Encouraging your local MP to campaign on this issue for the adoption of better protections
for our children. Do they think that it is acceptable that the Government prioritises
commercial interests over the wellbeing of our children through tolerating lax regulation and
industry drafted guidelines that consider it OK to expose children to alcohol advertising in
cinemas? Alex Salmond recently raised the issue with the Minister responsible for Digital
and Culture, Matthew Hancock.
Background
The ASA is a non-governmental organisation voluntarily paid for by the advertising industry.
ASA is responsible for the regulation of non-broadcast advertising against a code of practice written
by the advertising industry.

There are no rules that prohibit exposure of alcohol advertisements to under-18 year olds unless
25% or more of the audience is under-18 or the movie is a super-hero comic book spin-off or a 15
rated film on supernatural subjects.
As much as 40% of cinema advertising time can be dedicated to alcohol advertising.
'Your Voice Your Choice?'
Your Voice Your Choice is a project that involves local people. Residents will decide for themselves
what projects are needed to improve health and the environment for our communities’
wellbeing and be involved in delivering these. This is known as Participatory Budgeting. Following a
successful pilot in Fraserburgh and Peterhead last year the project has now been expanded to
include other areas of Aberdeenshire:
Buchan - Peterhead
Banff and Buchan - Fraserburgh
Formartine - Turriff
Garioch - Whole of Garioch
Kincardine & Mearns - Mearns Coastal Area (St Cyrus, Johnshaven, Gourdon, Inverbervie)
Marr - Whole of Marr
Participatory Budgeting (or PB) is the term used when local people decide how public funds are
allocated and used. Participatory budgeting always involves members of the public deciding how to
spend a public budget.

ADP Community Forums Updates
ADP North Community Forum
ADP North community forum looks at priorities for the year ahead
rd
On 23 February the ADP North community forum had its first meeting of 2017 in the Public Hall in
Boddam. A total of 23 community members in recovery, activists of forum funded projects, and
representatives of health, social care and support agencies all met to reflect on the achievements of the
past year and to discuss priorities for the year ahead.
Inspired by film footage from last year’s ‘3 Forums 1 Voice’ event and
supported by slide images from all the forum’s past year activities
participants listed their personal activity highlights of 2016, and what they
felt was achieved in the North. Here are some snippets of participants’
feedback:
‘becoming part of the North forum gave me the confidence to return to work.’  ‘recovery cafes
being started – they are so powerful for people and supportive as well as a confidence booster.’
‘getting involved in local community events such as Super Saturday is great for trying to drop the
stigma and let others see that people can recover’ ‘every week we manage to help someone in some
way, which is great’ (comment from representatives of a project funded by the North forum) ‘getting
people to attend conversation cafes and get their say in what they want to happen’ ‘The 3 Forums 1
Voice event’ ‘production of high quality videos that spread the
message’ ‘Recovery week events - in particular recovery cooking
in Fraserburgh’
The forum co-chair Brenda McGinlay also presented an overview of
the work of the ADP North community forum in 2016, the
priorities, the actions and outcomes and also some fast facts about
participation and reach as shown in the slide to the right.
It was then the turn of the present forum membership to discuss the approaches and priorities for the
coming year in conversation groups. A set of questions helped to guide the discussion.

Aberdeenshire has identified ‘Changing Aberdeenshire’s relationship with Alcohol’ as one of
three community planning priorities. What does this mean for us and how can we put this into
local action?

How can we continue to promote recovery and increase involvement in the forum’s activities?
Recovery promotion:
What kind of activities, projects or initiatives should the forum focus on in the coming year?

Lively group discussions produced an extensive list of suggestions, views and actions to pursue. All the
discussion outcomes and feedback from forum membership will be collated in a detailed report and will

form the back bone of a development and action plan for the ADP North community forum for 2017.
This plan will be presented at the next ADP North community forum meeting in Banff on 21st April.
Some of the suggested activities and initiatives for the forum to focus on in the coming year:
 Work together with local partners to fund and support the development of resilience
building activity projects for young people to reduce the risks of them getting into habits
of drinking and associating this with a good time
 Fund and support the development of a podcasting project, enabling community members
to learn podcasting skills and to produce podcasts relating to alcohol awareness and
recovery
 Fund and support the development of further recovery cafes/hubs/initiatives across the
North
 Promote physical and mental wellbeing as an important aspect of recovery by focussing on
the development of local initiatives such as walking for recovery etc.
 Link with employability agencies with a view to develop information packs for employers
including media testimonies (film/podcast) of lived experience and success stories
 Expand promotional work by focussing on contributions to community newsletters and
media
